    Marks WIPs

Ok figured I should start one Thread to put my build progress on kits rather than do separate ones. I'm mostly into MG's and while I paint all parts but the poly caps as individual parts I don't remove seam lines unless they are just bad flash from moulding. Perhaps I'm just lazy. lol.

I Still have the Red Frame Astray and all it's associated weapons and accessories going but decided to finally do something 00 again. I will do any final red frame updates here I guess, including the crazy idea I have to do a second full set so I can do a display of custom painted mirrored to anime colours purely built out of the box with all the accessories.

    QAN[T] time.

Made a start on the weapons stand which I will Paint and got the GN drive painted and assembled in my usual Alclad 50% steel, 50% Aluminium with some Jet exhaust shading and a protective gloss coat. I'll search through my many many left over 00 decals for some GN drive decals and then line fill and satin coat.

    20180602_013823.jpg

I'm trying to decide how to paint the GN Drive stand. I might mask the top half of the clamp so it stays green clear and do the rest of it mid or deep sea grey.

Having done the Raiser and seven swords which have much in common with the QAN[T] frame I'll probably do all the frame in metal colours with some panel lining before I do any of the armour.

Weapon stand and GN drive/GN drive holder complete (well is anything ever really complete).

Managed to finish the body frame before dinner. Will go back to the spray booth and dust some clear flat to tone back the gloss level in a few spots and then onto the red white blue and yellow outer armour pieces for this section. I was thinking of just doing the whole frame, but I wouldn't mind making a start on my 2 Astray Blue Frame D's.

Start on the Blue Frame D's

Thanks RPC. I have a few things on the go now so thought it may be good to consolidate. I really do need to select a pic host and take better pics.

Made a start on the Deban and Bandai blue frame D's. Figured I'd start with the Vouivre striker packs first. Plan is to still do the bootleg in anime colours and the Bandai in custom colours. The standard paint colour for the striker black parts is 70% midnight blue 30% black. I'll play a bit and try come up with a colour that will work once it has the sheen knocked off it with some flatting base. I'll be applying the supplied stickers and gloss coating then flatting those parts.

The plastic mix on the Deban is definitely softer than the Bandai equivalent. I might do a melt test on some of the sprue. heat a piece of each till one starts to droop. I suspect the Deban will go first. Having said that, I have seen far worse on plastic kits.

The Deban bits first pass clean up

I like the grey and green on the GN drive stand. It looks much better that way.

Thanks GM, yeah with a bit of extra detailing it should come up nicely. Meantime I really want to get the two Blue Frame packs and weapons done. Is a good opportunity to play with the paint blends for custom and standard. The bootleg Deban is definitely a lot more work than the Bandai.

Wait are you saying that a 3rd party kit is not up to Bandai standards? WOW who knew. (Says the man trying not to kill someone as he works on a mechanicore kit. LOL)

    LOL. The things we do.....

Finished the First striker pack in fairly basic kit colours other than to do a lot of the small dark grey parts satin gunmetal. just couldn't bring myself to doing all the parts in the deep blue black.

A couple of parts needed pegs trimmed but all in all it went together ok. The orange plastic is a shade lighter than the Bandai kit ones, but i clear oranged and then flat coated them all anyway. I used the Bandai stickers as the Deban ones don't seem to stick quite as well on curved bits. The bigger ones are ok, it's just the small ones. As I'm doing both in Acrylic I ended out using the Tamiya black and grey panel line accent and the trust zippo fluid to clean up.

Made a start on the Bandai striker pack. some bits are in the background of the pics. Took me forever to settle on a blue, so I didn't. I have painted 3 different shades, all with a gunmetal base and then varying levels of clear blue and black. It looks good in daylight. I'll start applying some decals and then seal them and gradually apply flat in places to tone it all down.

Got my Astray standard shield, beam rifle and beam sabre backpack bootleg today in the mail. Contains 3 copies of the P-Bandai sprue for these parts in red white and dark blue. Quick snap of one set is pretty good, will need some shape sanding and a bit of glue. It's good having the other 2 sets as I have plans to use the red frame MG kit to make a green and standard blue frame. My red frame flight pack is also on it's way.

    20180613_220915.jpg

After some mucking around, I found with the shield if I ignore colour and just swap bits around I eventually end up with 3 that snap together ok with just some sanding. For some reason If I do the shield as in the pic, the dark blue insert just doesn't want to stay in place. This is all ok as I'm painting all the parts anyway.

Was a long day at work so I didn't get much done other than to sort all my acrylic paints and decant them all and thin them into dropper bottles. I have a bunch of 50 and 30ml bottles that are meant for Vape Juice. They don't leak and are under 50c each. Perfect for Airbrushing with almost no waste.

Still waiting for my other flight pack to be shipped.

Finished off the backpack and the shield for the red frame. working on sanding back the beam rifle and the inside shield bits. My effectswings red dragon Astray backpack shipped

Not sure what colours to do the beam rifle. Shades of metal seems ok,but perhaps it needs some solid colours on it, dark blue or black. I lightly clear blued it.

For a bootleg the detail is not bad. the muzzle tip and sight cover are not painted yet, I might just go flat black on these.

    Re: Marks WIPs

Silly question. Why did you have to get the weapons kit? Did it only have the shield and rifle or was there a few other weapons in the add on kit? Also Didn't your Red frame come with a shield and rifle? Mine did. But I might have missed something important like you lost them or something equally as tragic like that.

Nah mine was the MBF-P02KAI and it didn't come with the shield, standard back pack or beam rifle. It only came with the Tactical arms and Gerbera Straight and Tiger Pierce swords.

On another note. I love the Astray...but The tactical assault thing, well I call it the suicide sword. I mean all someone has to do is get behind him and pull the trigger!! The damn barrel of the main gun is pointed, no correction, it is connected right into his back!! Someone did not think that all the way through. LOL

You know, now that I think about it. your right I was thinking about the PG. My MG did not have the shield either. Well crap.... where did you get yours (grumbling to himself for the stupidity of it all.)

LOL. yup, but it is one BAW..... I actually wanted the standard red frame but just couldn't find one anywhere so got the KAI.... plus it's winter here so the Tactical Arms was a good distraction build that I wasn't overly fussed if I naffed it up. As it turns out, it came out ok. At this rate I'll have more Astray Accessories than Astrays. lol

I found it on Aliexspress, but I'm still a bit leery of that site for some reason. everything seams so cheap on it, like too cheap. Whats up?

    - - - Updated - - -

The only "Standard" Red frame was ....wait for it....P-Bandai. Go figure.

    Re: Marks WIPs

I picked it up on eBay. Bit pricey, 19 dollars and a dollar shipping I think, but it comes with 3 identical spru, dark blue, white and red so you can make 3 beam rifles, shields and backpacks. This is kinda handy for my Astray obsession. I'll have a green frame (red frame painted green) that will need parts as well and I wouldn't mind doing a standard blue frame as well.

    - - - Updated - - -

LOL, on the P-Bandai... I did find one on eBay, free shipping for around 65 dollars I think. I almost got it.
