    Vile's Project Room

Hello all! I recently finished my MG Gyan(and it is now on display at the anime shop!) and being as how I feel I royally messed it up, I suppose it would be good to show off what I'm doing as I do it in hopes of getting pointers.

So now that I need a new project I may as well start something I've put off for years because I was afraid I wasn't good enough. 1/100 Gundam Mudrock Resin Conversion. Being as my JR Gyan came out nice, and my Gyancelot, I feel this one will too.

First things I'll be doing is the sanding. Everything fit well, so stsrting with basic cosmetics. I don't forsee me doing anything extensive with this kit as Mudrock is my baby, and kits of it are pretty rare.

Meanwhile, I have a 144 Gm Custom for playing Gundam Skirmish, and being as I don't care about them a whole lot I am going to practice shading on him with my first time using Tamiya paints. He is currently being held together with binderclips while the tamiya liquid cement drys between his seams. I may not care about hsi end result but I'm not cutting corners for him!

Primed the 144 Gm Custom. Gonna attempt my first shade on him. A few errors on the body but i don't feel like going back to fix them. This guy is going to be traveling alot for when playing Gundam Skirmish. Plus he's a practice for the paint job. Mudrock though, I am being extra meticulous on his body work.

So I did the base coat of orange. My first shade is looking okay. According to the discord server for gundam I'm a shit builder because I didn't mask off all those small spots. Because a wash is just evil.

Mmmmm Mudrock and wargaming, I like your style I'm planning on getting the 144 Mudrock resin kit for the RG Gundam. Eventually. Definitely. Someday...

F that noise, masking is a pain! What are you planning on using for the wash? I've been getting good mileage from my Vallejo, but I still use Nuln Oil when I want a filter/wash

I would get that Mudrock but I am not a hige fan of RG's. I find them really flimsy.

What I'll do is say the backpack, I'll do my gloss clear coat to prep for decals and then mask as best i can those small areas in, around the chest vents and such, and prime -paint, then use some thinner to clean it up. I usually use enemal and lighter fluid for washes but I'm trying out Tamiya stuff for this kit.

As for those asshats’ who say stupid crap in the safety of being on line, don’t listen to them. You would be surprised how many of them can’t do what the very same thing they are trash talking you for doing. I’m all for critiquing a build, but damn if I find something done wrong or something is not “right” (IMO) Make sure you give a reason and a solution or an alternate way of doing something.

As for your shading, I don’t see anything that wrong with it. Question you did the base color of orange then added the shading after? I tried that route and for me it just never turned out right.
I try to make it a bit more on the realistic side and shading does not really happen in the real world like it does in the modeling world. Mostly the dark lines around gaps and seams are mostly just dirt or leaking fluids. Anyway I’m rambling, sorry.

Have you tried a reverse shading? For simplicity sake I will use just black and white.
I would paint everything all black, then add the white from the center out. This will give you a better fade to the edges. And you can control the shading so some parts can have more or less depending on where the part goes.
I found that doing the fading second I personally always end up bad fades and sometimes no real fade at all.

As for the whole masking everything first bla bla bla. Some times I don’t mask a bunch of stuff off at all, but I come back after and hand paint it, or I use oil paint, or like you are doing I use a wash or inks.
But I make my own washes.

Glad I'm not a pleab and know what I'm doing others do. For the shading i primed the kit, then took black along the spots I think should be darker. I then mixed some brown into the orange to make it darker and did the base coat with that. Next I'll try the normal orange but I may mix it with a tiny bit o white to make it lighter and do the main coat with that.

I knew about the white trick but I discovered my brush is kinda finicky about getting precise areas. I'll try the white on the shield front. I plan to make it yellow.

    Re: Vile's Project Room

I did notice your disturbing lack of masking skills on your Mudrock! Why it's almost as if the tape is just thrown on the kit, like it is holding it together or something. Sad I would never do that, I'm perfect. You really need to work on masking. I know what I'm talking about, as I said I'm perfect and I have never ever had a problem with ANY of my builds. I can't believe the people they let build Gunpla these days. If I had my way you would have to pass a test to make sure you were up to MY level of building before you were allowed to buy your first kit! Besides, I can say what I want, I'm hiding behind my computer on line! So....

    Re: Vile's Project Room

I forgot to take some pics but i did the main coat. Im not happy with how its looking. It's frustrating to follow steps to a T and have it come out wrong but see someone post their 'first time model' and it looks better than anything you've done in the 5 yeara you've been trying to AB.

The tamiya is coming out kinda frosty or spirtzy. I have tried thinning more and playing with my PSI and it isn't looking any better. It lays flat but it's still bothering me.

    Re: Vile's Project Room

Trust me I know that feeling. I see people post stuff like "This I just threw it together this weekend because I was bored." and I look at it and wounder if they are going to enter it into GBWC. And I have been on the same kit for 2 months and I only have primer down, and I have to redo that!

Wish I could help with your paint, but I have yet to use Tamiya. Try asking in the paint how to/help thread and see what Squee says. He uses that stuff a lot.

    Re: Vile's Project Room

I've used Tamiya before and it's worked out pretty well - I thinned with the X20 thinner, mostly because I didn't know I could do it different at the time :P I think X20 also includes a retarding agent which slows down the drying - do you think that might help? I know Mr Color has a retarding agent you can buy.

    Re: Vile's Project Room

It could be the primer. I use acrylics and I know that on my first build I used the wrong clear coat and it got all frosty. It could be a bad reaction with the primer. But I'm just spit balling here.
