    Re: Vile's Project Room

Hey, that's looking really solid! For a test piece, it's coming out pretty good.

Have you tried any of the other skirmish games that folks have come up with? There's probably 3 or 4 different ones I've seen now.

    Re: Vile's Project Room

I have not teied any other games. I just play what thw group does lol.

I could try and hand paint the white parts to add some depth. If i mess up, oh well. Learn from failure and might as well fail on a test unit. One day I'll make Squee-senpai notice me

The critiquing eye of the Squee is a humbling thing indeed! LOL It's all good this is how we get better. If you don't mess up, or your to afraid to mess something up you will never get good at anything.

True that. Someone on discord is telling me I need to thin the Tamiya more. Which I agree, but he's saying 1 paint to 10 thinner.... that seems excessive. The yrllow was 2 paint 5 thinner and it was watery and was kinda tough to make smooth becuase it kept spreading.

Well they are kind of right. For lining you want the consistency of ink or water. Then you can put a bunch on a brush and just touch the line you want to add the color to and it will work with capillary action and the liquid will flow into the lines. You don't actually want to paint the lines on or brush the lining onto the part. Just a drop at a time here and there. let the liquid do it the work for you.

I did that for enemal instead. But they were refering to airbrushing with that ratio.

    Re: Vile's Project Room

-WOW that is a lot of thinner for an AB paint. I try to get the consistency of milk. But I also have a glass test I do for paints when I'm mixing really thick paint. I have an old piece of glass and I put 3 drops of the paint on the glass then stand it up straight and see who fast or slow the paint rolls down the glass. And how much paint it leaves on the glass or not. Too thin and no paint will stay in the glass, it will just fall off, too thick and it will just slide down the glass. To see what you want put 3 drops of milk and do the same test and that is what you are looking for in a paint. But also paints are different, not all paint can have the same mix ratio to thin them. Pigments and what not make a difference.

    Re: Vile's Project Room

Alright, time to move to the next best thing. The the Gm Custom done I am planning to leave my setup clean for my lady to AB her Bearguy(meaning she needs the clips and such). So april 7th the two of us are going to a Build Contest - 4 hours to build and customize an Act Zaku. I AM GOING TO WIN! I never win the 4 hour builds but I kill the events where i can AB, like 30 day builds. This will change. Some guy keeps winning because he brings a crapton of extra stuff - like a cardboard box spray painted and stocked with Christmas lights, or bribg dollhouses. So screw him! We're making a diorama.

The idea is a moon crater, or at least a ledge. Have the zaku leaning against it with his arm blown off and wires hanging while i jam a fed shield in his cockpit. For added flavor lets just add a backdrop of space out of a thin sheet of plaplate. Make it black with some white dot stars.

So started the shield. Used Gun Metal and then lightly misted stainless steel. Already Future coated it(not applied when photo was taken). Going to color it with enemals and wash away around the damage to have rhat metal shine through. Then going to lesrn chipping!

    Re: Vile's Project Room

Where are these 4 hour builds? Do you all get together to do this, or is it an honor system and you just check in on line? I assume you all do this together, because you said the other jerk wad (I only say that because I'm in your corner for this one.) brings a box of toys. AND extra parts for the build. I sort of call that cheating. If you are going to build something in 4 hours it should be a full build. Not with pre-made parts set and ready to go.

Hell it takes me 4 hours just to get the parts off the runners sanded and test fitted. But damn you build, paint, and make a diorama in 4 HOURS!!???!! kudos to you my friend.

    Re: Vile's Project Room

The anime shop hosts them. We are not allowed to use aerosols and we can only bring as many things that we can lay in our small workspace. Here's an album to one event the store did called Iron Cheif. Wr had a secret ingredient to add to our kit that wasn't reviled till we started and that happened to be an entier kit lol. I made the Gouf Flight Type in here.

Usually it's voted by person, everyone a slip that doesn't have their number and everyone votes. The Iron Cheif had legit judges who were each judging unique things - build cleanliness, Artistic, had half'n'half. I was second place for the latter two - i wasn't going for a perfect build with a funny idea.

So this time, I'm making some shit in advance.

    Re: Vile's Project Room

But you could bring a spare air tank with a regulator on it and use Vallejo acrylics and AB because it's not an aerosol...just sayin'... I have an extra couple of 20 gln air tanks so I could do that if I was there. But then again at the 4 hour mark I would just be finishing up my initial snap build. So I would fail. LOL

But it sounds like it would be fun to try.

I take it that this is not a blind event. So you know what kit you will only have 4 hours to build, and you can get all the planning out of the way before you get there.

I'm sure they wouldn't let you use an AB in any way as a safety precaution. Be it for health or for property damage.

I know, but it is a loop hole in the rules.

    Re: Vile's Project Room

I started to make my terrain for this 4 hour build. Made the base out of foam and then ran casting tape over it. I plan to paper mache it tonight.

I'll be honest, I roughly have no idea what I'm doing here. I've never made decent looking terrain before and lunar surfaces are gonna be weird. I'm guessing after a dark gray coat I should go over with a lighter bit in spots. I was thinking of dropping some sand over it before I paint to give it a rocky look. I'll also glue some real rocks when all is said and done.

    Re: Vile's Project Room

That'll be pretty sweet! I think the biggest thing for a lunar surface is a dusty look, with really dramatic lighting painted in. I'd go really dark, then a few rounds of a very light drybrush to get the really aggressive shadows you see on the moon in a vacuum.
