It's the two sides. The Gundam is part of the earth alliance Federation. They are supposed to be the "Good guys" then we have ZEON or principality of ZEON they are the space colonies. The One Year War or the original "Mobile Suit Gundam" is the start of the Gundam franchise. The Earth Federation is in control of earth and the colonies, they use the colonies for resources and they tax them hard. The Zabi family takes control of the space colony Government and declares that they want to be recognized by earth as a separate state or power. The earth has none of that and the war starts. Now if you read the books or watch the show you will see that ZEON is in all reality based on the Nazi in form of dress and they way they feel that space noids (people born in the colonies) are a superior form of human. But they had the coolest suits. And a better military force. It was the miss management that cast them the war. So some of us here call our selfs ZEION and other are FEDIES. It is not taken seriously, more like a running joke if you will. But we do love to pick on each other.

^It's a a bit more than that. Yoshiyuki Tomino (the original creator of Gundam from 1979) not only drew inspiration from the Nazi's, but the Imperial Japanese forces as well. In fact, Zeon's "conquest plan" bares more than a passing resemblance to Imperial Japan's Greater East-Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere.

Well, the original Gundam TV series (often nicknamed Gundam 0079 or First Gundam) was an analogy for the Second World War, specifically the Pacific Campaign that was fought between the US and Imperial Japan; it's that conflict that Yoshiyuki Tomino drew a lot of his inspiration from. And if you really think about it, Mobile Suits could be seen as the rise of air power as the dominant form of warfighting that came to define the Second World War.
