USA Gundam Store Montly Subscription Analysis

So, after my recent disappointment in the monthly membership box, and because I'm fixating on this a lot more than I should be, I've compiled a list of prices and known items received (going by this reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Gunpla/comm...thread_gundam/ ) in this month's USA Gundam Store using their own website's prices as a reference.

According to their membership page (found here: https://www.usagundamstore.com/produ...ore-membership ), for $29.99 per month plus shipping (which brings the price up to $34), you are supposed to get:

First week of each month between the 3rd and 4th, a box of $40 worth of

Mix of kits either HG, SD, Others
    Paint

    Decals

    Detail parts

    Tools
Discount Cards for website and special promotions

Membership will also get first pick on any damaged items at Half cost.
With that in mind, let's go over what I actually received this month, including both sale and regular prices as listed:

    Pic for reference:

1x HG Elf Bullock - sale price $14, regular price $21.89
    (link: https://www.usagundamstore.com/produ...ck-mask-custom )
    2x Petit'gguy Bittersweet Brown & Chocolate – sale price $6.25, regular price $7.99
    (link: https://www.usagundamstore.com/produ...rown-chocolate )
1x MS Machine Head (Clear Barbatos) – not listed anywhere on their site for sale as this is a gashapon item. Have seen stuff like this go from anywhere between $5-$10 depending on site.

No other items were in the box...no paints, decals, custom parts, discount cards, nothing but the packing paper.

    Math time!
    Going by Sale prices: $14 + 2($6.25) = $26.50
    Going by Regular prices: $21.89 + 2($7.99) = $37.87

Interesting...going by the sale prices, which is what you're actually paying for these items were you to order them straight off the site, I've only received $26.50 worth of stuff. Now, since they don't have a price listed for the MS Machine Head item, am I to assume that it costs approximately $13.50?!

Maybe not, as if you go by the regular prices of the items, you come up with a total of $37.87, meaning that the head only cost a more reasonable $2 or $3. But then again, since I can't order these items at these prices since that's not what they're currently being offered for, this can't be right.

Granted, these prices don't include tax, but that's less than $5. The final price of the items as you can currently get them is still WAY off from the $40 mark.

Ah, but the shipping costs! Let's take a look...
It's $4 to ship the monthly subscription box, which brings the total of the cost up to $34. Now, regular shipping on most orders is a flat $9.99. Going by that, were I to order the items directly from their site and have them shipped out, it'd cost me $36.49...so that means I've saved $2.49 on shipping and still didn't hit the $40 mark.

So, with all that information, I can only conclude that the USA Gundam Store's monthly subscription pricing is going off of the non-sale prices of the items they're sending; it's the only way that the numbers match up.

At least in my case. Let's take a look at the loot boxes others have received this month:

    Example 1:
GN Archer – sale price $13.99, regular price $15.99
Petit'gguy soda blue - sale price $6.25, regular price $7.99
Universal Unit – not listed for sale on the site, assuming similar cost to the Machine Head
IBO Option Set 8 – sale price $6.99, regular price $7.99

Total Cost: $27.23 by sale price, 31.97 by regular price.

    Example 2:
TR-1 Hazel Custom – sale price $14.99, regular price $19.99
Pretty in Pink Petit'guy – $5.00 (only one price on this one currently)
SD EX Try Burning Gundam - sale price $6.59, regular price $8.99
Machine Head - not listed for sale on the site

Total Cost: $26.58 by sale price, $33.98 by regular price.

    Example 3:
HG Beginning D Gundam – sale price $15.59, regular price $17.99
SD EX Barbatos Lupus - sale price $6.59, regular price $8.99
Petite'gguy Sodapop Blue - sale price $6.25, regular price $7.99
Machine Head - not listed for sale on the site

Total Cost: $28.43 by sale price, $34.97 by regular price

    Example 4:
HG Bael – sale price $13.59, regular price $16.99
HG ibo option set 8 – sale price $6.99, regular price $7.99
HG petit guy chocolate - sale price $6.25, regular price $7.99
HG customize campaign part – not listed for sale on the site

Total Cost: $26.83 by sale price, $32.97 by regular price

    Example 5:
HG 1/144 FOREVER GUNDAM – sale price 23.99, regular price $28.99
    HGPG HG 1/144 PETIT'GGUY SODAPOPBLUE & ICECANDY - sale price $6.25, regular price $7.99
SD RX-0 Unicorn Gundam (Destroy Mode) - sale price $6.59, regular price $8.99
Mobile Suit Machine Head – not listed for sale on the site

Total Cost: $36.83 by sale price, $45.97 by regular price

So, there you have some pretty interesting results. Prices were fairly consistent, varying about $2-$4 until example 5, which is the obvious winner when it comes to stuff they packed into the box, coming in at somewhere about $10 to $15 more than everyone else either by sale price or regular price, but still coming in under the $40 mark going by sale price, which, again, is what you can currently buy this stuff for on their site.

(I think I'm honestly more surprised that my box contents came in at several dollars more in value going by regular pricing than most of the others, thanks to the insane mark down on the Elf Bullock because, and I'm just hazarding a guess here, nobody wants it.)

And what does all this mean? Well, it either means that the Machine Heads and Universal Unit items are super expensive...or it means that USA Gundam Store isn't really giving out $40 worth of stuff in their subscription boxes. The only way to come close to $40, even with regular pricing, is to include the tax and shipping fees into the final price, which is what I'm assuming they're doing for the vast majority of these boxes.

Previous months boxes, at least the ones that actually included paints, tools, decals, custom parts, etc (looking at you, April box...that's when value started dropping), always hit around the $40 mark just on a quick look at item costs (at least in my case), so I'm curious as to what's happened here the last couple of times that caused the quality of these boxes to go so far down, and the rip-off factor to go so far up.

Feel free to dispute my info if you like; I do feel a bit spiteful right now, so I might be a bit biased, but I really did try not to be.

Just an FYI the Machine Head should not cost more than $5.95. That is the Barns & Nobels price and as you know they mark things up a good bit.
And the Universal Unit should only be about $7 that is what my hobby shop has them for.

I guess I'm glad I never got around to joining that box club.

I've not re-posted it anywhere yet; haven't had a chance to branch out today.

EDIT: I just linked it over at the May Subscription Box thread now that work's calmed down a bit.

I read the first paragraph of this and was thinking "oh that's really interesting". I'm new to this whole thing and mostly looking to build and paint stuff to learn and get better before I tackle some of the MS's I really love. After reading the whole thread that's a damn shame. Sounds like it's just a thinly veiled attempt to forcibly offload clearance stock.

Even if the products ended up being "worth it" from a cost perspective they need to be really worth it in order to justify the blind boxed nature of the sub. Even at paying $30 for "$40 value" doesn't seem like enough of a value to me. Again, damn that sucks, I am very intrigued by the idea. To get a similar effect, I go to my local Gundam store (I'm lucky to have a mostly exclusively Gundam store nearby) and ask them to recommend something.

it's a good thing that you posted this. a couple of months ago i was considering this as an option and thought it was great. i mean, there's a loot crate for everything, but not gunpla. i was excited, and then i saw un-boxing videos on youtube and thought that they got jipped. :P

from watching the videos and looking at your post, i can conclude that it's not worth it.

Yeah, I've actually not been subscribing for about 2 months now. The box before last was 1 HG IBO kit and 2 of the little DBZ vehicle kits. I would have been majorly PO'ed with that one. Although the last box was 2 HGUC Zaku kits, so there's the Zeon stuff I never got before, lol. Didn't seem to be quite as bad as previous boxes, but they were all older UC kits; apparently they're not really doing anything fancy like RGs or MGs anymore, though there haven't been any "WOW" boxes with a fancier kit inside reported either. Guess they just went middle of the road and decided on either okay stuff for everyone or crap for everyone.

makes sense, i kinda thought the same. the cheap stuff is probably the things that don't sell, so they're like screw it, let's make a loot crate style box and every once-in-a while we'll send out some good stuff too. if i were to get it , then i wouldn't mind it if i at least get a high grade kit from each box; each HG is between the 15-20 dollar area, so that covers a good chunk of the box's value. i'm still waiting to see if anyone has posted a video about august's box.

Welcome! Hopefully the cool factor will continue.

That Char's Zaku was actually my 2nd gunpla build way back in the day, so there was definitely some nostalgia factor there.
