Re: Painted custom MG Astray Red Frame

Thanks. Yeah the gold was rubbish. It was sort of translucent so you could see seam lines where the plastic was injected together inside the plastic, no amount of sanding and polishing would get rid of them. I ended out using alclad pale gold. It's quite nice as it seems to be very durable, unlike some of the other alclad metal paints.

Yes I do love some of the Alclad and not so much with others.

Re: Painted custom MG Astray Red Frame

Well I have had a frustrating time with misplacing all my kit stickers for the Red Frame but I did finish the swords. Don't weather angry. I did a stupid thing, which I will fix. The gold end pieces have disks which I had painted chrome but decided to apply some black chalk weathering to the lines. Unfortunately the chalk is abrasive and damaged the chrome so I touched it up by hand with some titanium gold.

I now have to make the call if I'm going to strip the chrome from the blades and re-paint them (stainless steel on the back half and chrome on the sharpened edge) to make them look less like chromed plastic.

I don't think I'll do much more tonight because I'm really pissed at myself for misplacing the stickers. I'll probably only make another mistake. Time for a red wine and TV to calm down.

Re: Painted custom MG Astray Red Frame

It's going to be interesting mixing up the different reds on the frame so everything "gels" color wise. Also the translucent colors over metal colors do tend to be a bit more fragile and susceptible to chipping.

I have decided to get hold of some replacement waterslides from ebay for the couple of decals that are missing from the sheet I already purchased. Racking my brain over some lost stickers had taken it's toll. Nothing like waking up at 3:00am and thinking "hang on did I leave it ...." and getting up spending half an hour looking. I am dog tired today. LOL

Dang, it's going to take 3 weeks for the decals to arrive. Fortunately I did a search for Amazing Red decals at the same time so I can replace some of the kit stickers on the ARW. Strangely when I was building the Amazing Red Warrior I searched for waterslides and nothing came up. They are listed on Globaltoys (ebay) as Amazing Red Worrier. LOL He must be worried because his guns are big but his shield is small. Shoot and scoot, no firing for effect.

Some progress on the Body Unit

Well not my prettiest work but having said that I am still experimenting with the red tones. The red ABS parts in this kit are really slick and very hard to get good paint adhesion. Most of the detail will be hidden anyway by the darker chest covers. I added some chipping in areas I think there could be metal on metal contact and general wear but decided to leave the outer stainless parts nice and clean. I intend doing the remaining red parts for the body unit a nice bright candy red over either stainless or chrome.

It sucks that I have to wait for decals, but I may be able to make do with what I have to at least get the Body unit completed.

Body Unit Head unit and Waist unit complete

Between building retaining walls and general garden work around the house, I managed to complete the body unit, head unit and waist unit. Well basic completion. I will re-visit parts as I go and add some more detail depending on how the other parts come up. I'm fairly happy but the paint is "fragile" compared to straight solid colours. I did decide to mix in some solid reds on various parts rather than go down the all metallic look reds. It still sucks waiting for decals but I have enough to keep me going a bit longer.

Next will be the rest of the back parts. The arms and legs can wait.

Thanks. Just finished cleaning up all the parts for the back of the waist and body units. Might stick with solid flat red shaded for those parts and really hit the panel lines. Anyway that's a job for tomorrow after work.

Your red frame is so cool. I'm really liking the way you are doing the red paint. It really pops. Don't you just hate it when you do a boat load of detail just to cover it up. I do the samething but at least I know it is there and it is done correctly.

Yep. I spent hours on stuff that will never be seen by the time all the armour is fitted and like you say, at least I know it's there. I think I have done a slightly different shade of red for each main part so far. Some is clear red over flat aluminium. some is a light coat of solid red followed by clear red over stainless. There is alclad steel, alclad steel blended, alclad chrome, Alclad gold titanium gold.......

I'm too scared to try detail the stainless as it looks so nice off the gun LOL.

I really like the allclad line. My hobby shop has most of their line in stock. Have you tried the candy colors? I had to have them order them for me but man the colors are so nice. If you look back in my WIP I did the proto Zero in allclad candy reds and blues you might find that they would add a new dimention to your build. like the candy apple or candy cherry red.

here is a picture of the two reds.

Re: Painted custom MG Astray Red Frame

I havn't tried the Alclad candy paint yet. Unfortunately the Alclad is getting harder for me to get. The place I get it online from charges $45 shipping even if you only buy one. I was hoping for another work trip before the end of the year which would take me to where the online store has it's physical shop . That's how I got the last batch. I may just place a big order and get a whole bunch.
