    Urban's WIPs

Just have two for the moment. Been working on this GM for a few weeks on and off (boy, spring really cuts into the hobby time!), and it's almost ready for painting. Just have to touch up the primer in a few spots and decide what kind of coating I want to give it. Also, Really Useful Box is actually really useful for separating parts.

Also been working on building this old kit from back when Gundam was a thing in the US. Had the GP-01Fb and the GP-03 when they released kits with US labels and these were "Skill Level 4".

It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. At least, that's what I keep telling myself with all my modeling supplies...

Nice - are you planning more or less stock colors?

A couple kits in my backlog definitely have that Skill Level logo - blast from the past indeed hahaha

For the GM, I'm thinking the red-orange parts are going to be some shade of purple, and the rest is probably going to be a dark blue. Haven't settled on it 100% yet, planning some spray tests this weekend to help me decide.

Probably gonna leave the Gundam in its normal colors, though. Just going to paint the shield and a few other spots instead of using the stickers.

Groovy - purples and blues sound like a pretty sweet scheme.

Here's hoping. Just waiting for the humidity here to drop a bit before I do some spray tests.

In another kind of related WiP, I'm going to try to complete my "Wall O' Gundam", which is composed of MSiA figures. I've got four or five more that I never hung up for whatever reason, and may move my Wing figures to this wall as well. Attempted to finish this up last night, but couldn't find my nails. Go figure. SO, project for this evening! Straightening, possible rearranging, and adding up other figures. Then maybe some painting.

Hay nice choice in gundams to build. The GPO1 and 03 are great Gundams! One of my favs for sure. If you want a good parts box, hit up Walmart and go to the fishing/hunting section they have a bunch of plastic tots the you can adjust the compartments to soot your needs. I love them and I have a bunch of them. Your wall makes me happy/sad. I had a couple hundred of those at one time. The Ex Ebayed them all behind my back. some one made out like a bandit. She sold them all as a "lot".
List of things to do today. 1. Get a sword. 2. Name it Kindness. 3 Kill people with Kindness.

    Re: Urban's WIPs

I've got the 03 built already; it was actually the first HG I built on my return to the hobby. And what a kit to start back on...those arms were insane! I can definitely see some room for improvement on it, but for my first kit in such a long time, I'm just happy I didn't royally screw it up, lol. Probably go back and fix some stuff on it at a later date, namely some of the paint and panel lines (just noticed I completely forgot about the lines on the underside of those large rear thruster skirts), but overall I'm happy with it.

Sorry to hear about your lost collection; that really sucks hard. I can only imagine how you must have felt when you discovered that. Appreciate the tip on the storage options at Wal-Mart, though.

Interesting... would you might posting a couple pics of them? There's almost no information on the US packaging variants in the internet, at least that I could find.

Well, didn't get the wall completed yet, but I did finish the build on the GP-01 Fb. Just gotta do some touch up, paint, and the panel lines now.

Nice and clean so far, looking forward to the touch ups!

    @Dark Matter Dynames - I don't want to flood Urban's thread, so I made a thread here: http://www.gundamforums.com/showthre...976#post255976

    Re: Urban's WIPs

Well, think I must have picked up a bad can of paint or something. Purple I was using for my GM project just didn't work out. Thought it was high humidity causing a chunking effect, but tried again today and it was the same thing. Don't know why it worked fine when I first tried it and then it crapped out, but oh well, this was on the $5 GM kit, so I'm not horribly upset by it. Nor am I too concerned about a perfect build, since this was more a learning experience with painting techniques anyway.

So, to fix the spray paint problem, I went back to the classics and brush-painted the parts. These were originally silver, was going to do a transparent purple on top, but as I mentioned, it didn't work out. So, here's the most recent painting, just gonna wait for it to dry, might even get it finished in a couple days.

Also got the painting work done on my GP-01fb this weekend as well. May go back to it eventually, but for the most part, I'm really happy with its appearance. After a few more kits, I think I'll finish the trio with the Physalis.

That sucks about the paint. The hand paint looks pretty good, though! And nice job detailing the GP01 - very clean.

Yeah, I'm thinking it'll turn out okay. Whatever was wrong with that spray paint, it left a pretty rough surface on the shoulders and shield. Even a good bit of sanding didn't want to get rid of it all, so I'm sure they're gonna be a bit off, but, eh, its a learning experience. This did give me a chance to experiment with thinning some paints down, though. Never did that when I last built models all those years ago.

Yeah i'm still getting used to it honestly... tho the last model i built was like... 20 year ago lol (wow that makes me feel weird even saying). I built snap fit planes and would paint the coats so thick with enamel paint that it would turn the models really heavy hahaha...

As for the paint did you turn it over and clear the nozzle after you painted the first time? you have to be really careful to make sure you clear the end or else it will cause gunking up and the spray will come out uneven and sometimes pick up on those chunks.

    Re: Urban's WIPs

I'm not too far off; last time I was in the hobby was right around the turn of the century. i was always bad at spray paints back then cause I didn't get the whole "short, controlled bursts" idea, lol. And to younger me, paint thinner was cleaning brushes, not

That's the odd thing; it appeared to be spraying fine, it was coming out in a steady mist as far as I could tell, but it was like the color parts of the can contents just weren't mixing up correctly or something. I could literally see the mist cover the part, but it was like the glossy part went down, and only a few bits of color were mixed in with it. And this was after letting it sit out in the sun for 15-20 minutes on an 80 degree day with humidity under 50%. Kept shaking it up between sprays, may have gotten a bit more color out, but by the time the part was actually noticeably purple, it was lumpy.
