    Post DM 1/100 Akatsuki WIP

Decided to drop some $$ on the Dragon Momoko Akatsuki after seeing that the Bandai kit was OOP and going for $100+ on ebay if you can find one. at $39 plus shipping from HK, this comes in well below a comparable MG kit and the quality is amazing for a "Grey Market" kit.

Came in a nice big box with a pic of the terrestrial flight version (Oowashi?) on one side and the space flight (Shiranui?) version on the other.
Most of the parts were nicely Under Gated so the nubs should be kept to a minimum as it is cast in a sparkly gold plastic.

I decided I wanted a deeper color so I painted over the gold parts with Spaz Stix Candy Gold laquer and the darker copper looking parts with Spaz Stix Candy Root Beer.
I painted the frame with Specialist Paints: Inspire Black Pearl which gave it a semi shiny opalescent sheen, I could have painted more coats of this but i am impatient and figured a dark grey was good enough.
I painted other parts like some metal bits and the hands with Armory Silver Primer and dull coated the entire thing except for the frame which I left semi gloss.

The red, white, and black parts I just sprayed with Krylon spray and called it good.

All the parts fresh off the skewers.

Mostly assembled frame, painted and ready to start getting armored up. This frame is easily comparable to the Bandai MG Strike frames, lots of moving parts and great articulation.

A few pieces of torso armor in place after the first evening of assembly. So far no glue on anything but some parts fit REALLY tight.

I replaced the stock foil stickers for eyes and head-light-thing with some iridescent foil stickers I got in another "detail up" kit, I like the effect but the proportions of the eyes to forehead look a bit... off, to me.
Also I begin to notice where a little more pre-paint nub management would have paid off, but too late now.

One of the backpacks, this thing is HUGE and easily as tall as the MS itself, I question the ability to pose the kit standing with this think mounted.

The other backpack, still missing a couple pieces that were drying but almost done.

Night two of assembly done, wow those nubs really stand out, realizing I should have gone all the way with the painting and primed the entire kit gloss black and built up to gold chrome, the drawbacks of impatience.

I re positioned the "V Fin" lower on his forehead, had to shave off the post it attaches by and glue it on but now it sits lower and looks more like a visor and the eyes don't look so buggy. Too bad this now exposes a nasty seam right down his forehead.

Another angle of head and shield.

Nice work so far. Can't wait to see it finished, since this kit has been on my watchlist for some time.

I know they are bootlegs and we should be supporting the official Bandai kits, but some of those Dragon Momoko and TT Hongli kits aren't bad at all. I got a TT Hongli Deathscythe EW and Destiny Gundam Extreme Blast, and a Dragon Momoko Infinite Justice, and for the price they are very worth it, especially the Destiny Extreme Blast.

I dont fully agree, i have a TT sinanju and is a bag of crap, i wouldn't recomend them to to anyone. I also have a DM launch and sword pack for the strike, the sword is very very nice well made and goes together really well, the gun is only just passable and thats the big problem with these kits. The quality controls do not exsist so you are taking a gamble with every kit you order.

Nice work on the kit by the way, but when the mods see the thread they might delet it as the site has a none KO kit rule. Im having a grumpy day sorry.

That is why I said SOME kits are pretty good for the price. I also have a TT Hongli HG Hi-Nu Gundam and that is complete garbage. I support the official Bandai kits, I just got the bootlegs out of curiosity or in the case of my Dragon Momoko Infinite Justice, as a present from someone who didn't know it was bootleg.

Man, that is some ugly gold plastic! I think if i ever did this kit i'd get the resin version it is copied from. i'd be so fearful of the bad plastic fitting.

Ya I usually do stick with Bandai "official" kits but this one is OOP so unless you are willing to pay 2-3X retail to get a NOS Bandai version that is a "Non Grade" kit, this is the only game in town. At $35 it wasn't bad either. The only "grey market" kits are those that are either not produced by Bandai at all (like the Nu Ground Type), or OOP, and yes, there is deff a quality difference, if given the choice I would always buy "official".

Any issues with the build? Alignment, fitting, etc?

Everything assembled perfectly, I would say 98% of Bandai. The only issue I ran into is the paint, they bill it as "pre painted" like it is a bonus, however, once you clip the nubs, now there is no way to cover them up since the surrounding area is painted a color we don't actually have.
I also didn't care for how the crest/visor was modeled, it goes on REALLY high up and to me looked silly, but when I moved it lower it exposed the gap in the forehead, sometimes you can't win.

That's not what i was saying. I'm saying that this kit is a copy of the resin conversion kit that came out many years ago, and if i was to ever build this i'd go that route. Its still available as a recast in many places.

Freakin Cool. Is there a bandai version of this. Or is it a Custom Third Party kit?
