Ah yes, the MiG-21. A good interceptor, but that's all it's good for as the delta wings do not make for a fighter. I don't know what the other one below it is. As a pilot (in training at least), I'm more of a fan of the F-14 Tomcat. Now that was a fighter.

The Saab Draken good because it uses the double-delta wing which allows it to have exceptional maneuverability at high and low speeds. The Eurofighter has front mounted canards to make it more aerodynamically stable at high and low speeds. The Mirage III... I actually don't know a lot about that one. Other than those exceptions, delta wings have been proven to be unfit for a fighter role aircraft as they require high speeds to remain stable. Which is why they are perfect for interceptors as they only have one target that they need to get to quickly.

The Mirage IIIs more or less pwned the entire Arab air force during Six day war. The Mirage series has been one of the most sold post WW2 jets. It's pretty much living proof how a single Delta wing can work.

... Point taken. Still though, most delta-winged craft are relegated to interceptor roles.

True. From straight wing jets my personal favorite is either the Su-27 or F-8 Crusader.

    Re: Plane Topic

Considering most delta wing fighters were built at a time when missiles reigned supreme and most aircraft designers thought adding a gun to it is just an extra. Also the delta wing by itself is not bad for dogfighting but it produces a more stable plane which won't do the crazy stunts planes with unstable airframes like Mig-29 and Su-27 so. also Mig-21 is tiny compared to most fighter planes and its short stubby wings are quite good for low-speed manoeuvres.

And I know Su-47 was never a production model but it looks freaking cool.

    Straight from the 2040s
Sukhois are just cool planes IMO.

The Finnish air force used to wield the 21 and Draken in the 80s till they were replaced by the F-18C.

I too have allways had a soft spot for the tomcat, I think it's because of Top Gun lol.

I also have a fondness for the Mig-21, actually I like Soviet built War Machines as a whole for some reason. Just so simple usually, but effective.

The same. I really wish that the Air Force would have opted for the Mig 29s instead of the F18s.

Don't be hatin' on the F-18. It's still a good fighter. I actually one fly over me last year while I was waiting for my ride after I finished a night class at my college. It's turn radius is quite small, it's thrust-to-weight ratio is pretty good (though this is because it was primarily designed as a carrier fighter), and the various upgrades over the years have extended it's service life.

    No hate.
I just personally feel the 29 would have been more sensible choice even if unit cost would have been higher.

    Re: Plane Topic

Well, the MiG-29 was designed as an air-superiority fighter, and thus is more expensive. The McDonnell-Douglas F-18 is designed as a multi-role fighter in that it can perform the same role as an air-superiority fighter, a ground-attack fighter, and an interceptor all while being cheaper to manufacture.
