Yep. He landed safely on golf course, while his plan took only some minor damage from clipping a few trees.

Looks like he was flying a PT22 or something, it's a shame to see a old plane get wrecked like that

It was a PT-22. These were designed to be trainers for the US Army Air Corp (the precursor to the USAF). There were made by the Ryan Aeronautical Company, the same company that made Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis.

This is one of those stories that i think shows, that amid all the death, misery and sorrow, there are great men who stayed on the side of humane behavior.

Indeed. That's why I want to encourage people to not look things as so black and white.
The was no reason for Mr Siegler to escort that bomber out. But he did. He was one of the "bad guys" but showed compassion for those dubbed enemies in their time of desperation. Truly inspiring.

    Re: Plane Topic

So I've got a question for all you aviation fans out here on the forums. The question is: if you had the money and space, what kind of old jet (from the early 50's to the late 60's and it can be either private, commercial, or ex-military) would you like to own? I'll start with mine: I would own either a North American Aviation F-86 Sabre (the E-type variant specifically) or the McDonnell-Douglas F-4 Phantom II.

    Here are pictures of both:

The North American Aviation F-86E Sabre

and the McDonnell-Douglas F-4 Phantom II

    Re: Plane Topic

id be there with you on the Phantom. my grandfather is a retired Marine Corps Master Sergent. he was airframes and he worked on them a lot. id also have a AV-8B. but if i were going to get a warbird for real id get a corsair. i will be getting my private pilots license eventually. ill use my GI bill on it if i have to. but i doubt ill have to its not THAT expensive.

    Re: Plane Topic

If you want to learn to fly Zaku, you should come out here to California. We got virtually perfect flying weather year-round.

Another two planes I'd like to own would be the Saab 35 Draken and the Hawker Hunter T7 The reasons I like these planes is simply because of the wing shape of both.

Here is the Hawker Hunter T7

and here is the Saab 35 Draken
