Re: Plamobot's build thread (with occasional WIP)

Yeah, it was a really fun build. Big solid model, and the rubber pads included for the feet make posing it a bit easier. The only quirks are that the LED in the eyes seems a bit weak, and there's a nub on the back edge of the sword blade. Bah!

Not to worried about the sword. I have a Metal one to replace the plastic one from the kit. But thanks, nice to know they kept the rubber feet. The Strike has those as well.

I wonder how the metal one stacks up. The plastic one included in the kit has a surprising amount of detail, including the "waves" on the blade from the (in-universe) metal being forged. I know there's a real-world term for that, as applies to Japanese swords, but I don't know what it is.

I will get you a side by side picture. It looks great and it has the wave things of which the name I can't remember right now. (smacks self in the head for forgetting). The only problem I have with it is the quality control of the people who put it together. You can see the glue seeping out at the hilt, nothing I can't fix, and will. But other than that it is a nice looking sword.
The big difference is I can sharpen it and make it functional.

The plastic one's point is sharp enough!

Is the metal one the same one I've seen on eBay for around 20 bucks?

Yup, it is that one. I want to find another scabbard so I can have a double sword, but I might have to make it myself can't find one to save my life.

I think you're talking about the hamon (Pronounce hamone)

    Great job on the kits!

Re: Plamobot's build thread (with occasional WIP)

    Nice zaku!
And does the metal blade for the astray have a hamon? Cause it would be awesome if it did. But not actually a big deal if it does not. On a real katana the hamon is the result of the hardening process the blade is covered with a clay based mixture on the spine and with a stick painted into that wavy patern. Then the clay is allowed to dry and the blade is heated up to hardening temp and quenched in oil. The clay acts as an insulator and keeps the heat from being sucked out of the spine as fast as it is it sucked out of the edge therefore you end up with a very hard edge that will be able to be vary sharp and stay sharp longer. And a sline that will not be as hard and ha e some flex to it making the sword more durable. But with the blade from the kit you can use Ferric chloride to etch the patern on and make it look lime a proper hamon. Or you could use a electo-chemical etch. Ive made one out of a 12v power supply and use staltwater it works great.

    Zaku on kova luu.
