It's not perfect (I even broke the v-fin lol; superglued it right after I cried inside), but I think I did good for my first [serious] kit.

The process:
-sanded > panel lined with gundam markers > decal-ed > spraypainted a few parts just to practice (gray primer, than 1 paint coat) like red for the insides of the thrusters, white on some parts of the hyper bazooka which came in all gray and the gundam hammer. The only sticker i used was for the eyes. > and of course a dash of a flat topcoat (Bosny Flat Clear for this one)

Dude, excellent work man. Your RX-78-2 looks awesome. The panel lining is great, and the flat coat just adds to it. Awesome work man.

Very clean and crisp-looking kit you got there. It's pleasant to look at, even if it's just the pictures. Can't wait to see what else you got in store.

thanks, although it will take a while before I get my hands on a second kit. Then again it is a fairly expensive hobby xd

FINALLY. After 2 weeks of work I'm done with this kickass kit.

RX-0 Unicorn Gundam

-Decals + Panel lines
-Gray Primer + Paint
Black - weapons, backpack, feet, some of the white armor like the shoulders and the center of the v-fin (imo gives some variety to the all white parts)
Signal Red - Psychoframe, missile pods on the bazooka
Bronze Gold - some of the pipings and the thrusters
Gundam Marker Yellow and Red for the V-fin and the inside of the thrusters (although they look more orange. It probably reacted badly to the primer)
-Flat Coat

I left the penis psychoframe closed on purpose. I think it looks better that way.

All in all I'm pretty proud with the subtle color changes I did. T'was a good build for me. Next up, NU GUNDAM NIGAS.

thanks guys. The only drawback I had with this was with the panel lining because I didn't line the whole kit. I still can't get the hang of panel lining on a painted surface.

I didn't try the gloss coat before lining strategy yet though. Everytime I line it quickly sticks to the paint. If I rub it off with alcohol (70%) it's likely going to smudge on the paint around the line.

How about trying a panel line wash using enamel paints (or acrylic if you're using enamel/lacquer clear coats and flat coats)?

I don't think you should worry too much about the Unicorn not being panel lined. It's one of those kits that look fine without it, especially considering what you've done for yours. I didn't notice it at all because I was awed by everything else you did.

hm haven't thought about that technique. I use acrylic clear coats so it's no problem i guess. I'll see what I can do when I make another kit.

I did line most of the white armor with a gundam marker, just not most of the painted parts like the v-fin and the pframe. I noticed that it is one of those kits that don't need much lining. If anything, it has more of "edges" than actual ridges to fill, especially compared to the rx78 I did before.

appreciate it :)

I agree with Dlinker, the Unicorn is one of those kits that really doesn't need panel lining. It's natural armor being the way it is for the transformation gives you some natural panel lines.

Anytime, man. You may find it a bit easier to go with a panel line wash on your next kit. I used to do it with Gundam markers and a .2mm mechanical pencil on my first few kits. Then, when I tried a wash the first time, I found it to be a quicker process that required less concentration on my part. Thanks to some help here in this forum (specifically, being pointed to using gloss enamels rather than flat/matte), it turned out to be pretty darn simple to do. Granted, your mileage may vary with it, but like you said, it's worth a shot :)

Wow, that's just awesome. Now I'm more excited to work on my own Unicorn kit. How did you manage to paint the bazooka shells? Was it by hand?

yanos626

All those 4 pods are one individual piece (which are enclosed by 2 separate parts), so I primed it then spraypainted it red. I just used a panel line marker to paint the center circles and those little outer edges.

If you're getting the mg that is. dunno about the hguc one

I actually bought this late February but I took a gunpla break mid March because of exams and such. About 1.5 weeks ago I got my motivation back at it and BAM I'm done. The decals and the weak ass fin funnel weight distribution thing was a pain in the hands but it was worth it.

Loving the decal work and gold paint. Assuming you painted it due to the texture. Did you put in all of the decals or just some of them? I heard it has a huge decal sheet.

Interesting color on the thrusters too. It's refreshing to see them not painted chrome, haha.

yanos626
April 22, 2013, 7:10 AM
Thanks guys! I did get tired of all the chrome and gold thrusters so I did some random color pick at the hardware store. It's baltic white. It's kinda like the color of the rx 78 OYW MG but less green, or like the old school off-white colored keyboards.

Dark Gray replaced the navy blue and black replaced those lighter blue stickers it came with (although I did cheat and paint the stickers black and then put them on the respected places so I didn't have to mask anymore haha). Added some more of those colors on the top shoulders, side arms, front skirts, and feet. Then of course the joints/pipings and thrusters were painted. All white (and off-white stickers which I used), red, yellow parts were untouched. + matte topcoat

I used only some of the decals and re-positioned some on other places. Fully decaled nu imo is too much.
