D-Smith Vs. Substance Models

Well for some time now mechalounge regular Substance and I have been planning to do a Perfect Grade build off. We have had a stuff to finish up and we are finally getting around to it. I started working on the Perfect Grade RX-178 MK.II last night and completed snap fitting the right leg. I knew PG's were gonna be far supperior to Master Grades but to say i was blown away by how intricate and just intersting the build was would be an understatement. It was anything and everything i expected and then some. I have some pictures for you guys but nothing super exciting since no mod work or paint has been done but still some eye candy.

Speaking of mod work. i am still trying to brainstorm something but i originally just wanted to light this sucker up, but i have been stumped in my quest to add LED's to the leg vents. The leg vents actually slide in and out making it impossible if i want to keep that feature of the kit. If i decided i didn't want to keep that feature it would still be difficult due to the construction its self. I should have taken pictures of what it looks like but it doesn't seem practical, but maybe i just need to come back to it later and see if that opens my mind up a little more.

On yet another note i am still trying to decide on my color scheme. I initially was gonna do somewhat of an Amuro/Nu Gundam rip off using his unicorn and Amuro logos with a black/white/yellow scheme. Now i am kinda starting to think i might do something similar to the MK.III but with more varying shades of grey

So let me know what you guys think and any ideas or advice is always welcome. here is some pictures like i said so enjoy even though they are pretty bad pictures lol :)

I actually started disassembly of the right leg and started the lower third portion. dont have anything to show you because its only been primed and gloss blacked so nothing special yet but should be starting the cool stuff tomorrow.

jeez... that's a lot of detail. i mean the internal skeleton is... WOW! kind of a shame that the armor covers up all that detail.

Those are some sexy legs you have there ;)

I am loving this model. If I didn't have a mountain of unbuilt kits, I would get one of these for me. How did you paint the white?

D-Smith
September 10, 2012, 4:10 PM
I have not painted any exterior armor yet. all i have painted so far is the lower third of the leg, still detailing it though. so you will have to wait to see how i paint the white lol

Excellent work! I'm struggling with the masking thing myself. My problem is needing to get away from the lacquer-based metallics, though...

D-Smith
September 10, 2012, 8:25 PM
Its those damn round pieces. I kinda rushed through and didnt get a good seal so gotta touch it up. I find the alclads though to be just fine when masking. I have not used model masters for a detail bit yet just for the gun metal but they are very similar

Same here, it was one of the few times it turned out exactly as i was hoping lol. i sprayed the rainbowy paint and was like hmmm what if? and BOOM blue green spectrum.

September 11, 2012, 1:35 AM

I does, I does. Honestly, I've been waiting for a cheap Ignition Mode MG Exia to show up on ebay. I'd rather just buy the model and keep it in RI form rather than buy another HG Exia (or mod one of the ones I have) and make it a HG RI. Not that I don't think I can do it, I just don't wanna.

Not that good? Are you nuts? That looks amazing man. I would only wish to be able to paint that well.

D-Smith
January 7, 2013, 10:22 PM
haha trust me man i am sure if tried you could do this. its just a LOT of masking

Dlinker
January 7, 2013, 11:59 PM
How did you go about masking the circular areas? Big piece of masking tape and just cut around it? The end result so far is indeed spectacular.

D-Smith
January 8, 2013, 3:37 AM
i wish i could do it that way because it would be so much easier but my technique which probably is not the easiest or most precise but i just cut little strips up and put them around it and each time around i keep filling gaps till there are no glaring openings

Dlinker
January 8, 2013, 10:33 AM
Perhaps not the easiest method, but yours got the job done and with better results than my last attempt. Is it safe to assume you'll be leaving the some of the frame exposed when you're done with it all?

D-Smith
January 8, 2013, 11:10 AM
ehh probably not. i will be taking pics of the finish frame when that day comes but then all the armor is going on. kinda just wanna detail the frame just so i can say to myself i have done it before

dankoo
January 9, 2013, 1:09 AM
was wondering instead of masking tape, did you guys try blu-tack? It maybe easier on circular parts....

D-Smith
January 9, 2013, 3:11 AM
i have used that in the paste when painting Car emblems and what not but i would not trust it on any of my metallics personally but thats just me
