Well since everyone seems to be doing a build thread with all their current projects. I thought I would as well considering I have a few projects laying around. I'll try to keep things a little organized as much as I can. I'll start the thread off with project #1. The RG Aile Strike. Any project I start afterwards will simply be #2 and so forth. Any who. I hope you guys enjoy this as much as I am.

Project 1: 1/144 RG Aile Strike

I started this thing while I was painting my Banshees. But with their demand of attention I really wasn't able to work on it that much. But now that they are done. I can finally get started on getting this guy together. This is what I've got so far. I do have both legs done. And I just now finished the waist. Though I forgot to take pictures of it. lol

I don't know if you can see it. But there is a break in the framework above the calf area. This came about cause I misunderstood the directions and put 2 inner frame pieces on the opposite sides. So nothing really fit properly. And while trying to take the piece off after I realized the problem. She broke. Just goes to show that one really needs to pay very close attention with these RG kits. Even an experienced builder like myself can screw up. lol

bummer about the piece man. have you thought about sanding or scraping away the nub marks with a hobby knife? looks like there isn't to many really visible ones but that would greatly improve this oob build

thwalker13
June 30, 2012, 4:18 PM
I have I just really havn't gotten around to actually trying that method yet. I did sand them down on my Banshee. But that kit was getting painted. So the bad looking sand marks were going to be covered up.

D-Smith
June 30, 2012, 4:24 PM
then the hobby knife scrape will be perfect because as long as you don't dig in it turns out pretty unnoticable, for sure less noticable then nubs.

i usually sand mine but when i did the scrape i would cut off as much as i could with the knife without going in deep and then slide the knife over the spot in questiom at a somewhere between 45 and 90 degree angle and that will clean her right up.

thwalker13
June 30, 2012, 4:36 PM
Nice. I'll give it a try next time I work on the Strike. I plan on doing some sanding when I build my 00 Raiser. But I should have some Gundam Markers by then to take care of that.

D-Smith
June 30, 2012, 4:40 PM
hmm maybe. i think you jsut need to man up and do a full paint build off with me lol just playin... but seriously lol... it would be fun...

thwalker13
June 30, 2012, 4:44 PM
I agree that it would be fun. I just need a break from painting for a little while. Painting both Banshees in a row kinda burnt me out. But I plan on painting more in the future. I just want to take a break and try out some new things. My next challenge, decals.

D-Smith
June 30, 2012, 4:49 PM
well i wont be ready for a minimum of 2-2 1/2 months before i could even think about doing it so if you are ready then, let me know

Joe
June 30, 2012, 4:57 PM
After watching Vegeta8259's nub removal tutorial, I'll be picking p some automotive sand paper because it looked like it left little to no "sandpaper mark". Might what to take a look at that video, Walker.

June 30, 2012, 5:02 PM
400-800-1000 will leave no scarring but it will make the finish slightly duller but so will the knife teq but depending on how you sand me personally i make sanding sticks and it affects a larger are then the knife. but i haven't seen that video so idk what he does but just experiment thats the best thing to do IMO

thwalker13
July 1, 2012, 11:21 AM
Agreed. I started the arms last night. But wasn't able to finish them cause of company showing up. So I'm going to attempt to get them finished today. Hopefully GS&M will get in my next project here soon.

thwalker13
July 2, 2012, 9:18 PM
Got the arms done. Since both are the same. I only took a picture of one. But, I think they turned out good. All they need are the decals. Which I'll do after I get the whole kit put together.

Well I got the entire MS put together. But I've run into a problem. It would seem that this RG suffers from "lose neck syndrome". The ball joint for the head unit is lose that it can't even be posed. The head falls 100% of the time and the slightest movement causes it fly all over the place. Looking into a solution now.

Looks really nice. Like the bronze bits on the arm. I have to get better at hand painting small details.

thwalker13
July 7, 2012, 11:32 PM
Yeah I've tried using those foil stickers that come with the RG kits for the joints and I have the worst luck with them. They will not get into place and if the do they will not stay in place. So I finally just said to hell with them and did some slight painting. Works 100% better in my opinion.

July 8, 2012, 1:41 PM
Well I got a small update. I used Joe's advice to use some glue to fix the Strike's loose neck. Worked like a charm. Thanks again Joe. I also got the Beam Rifle, and Shield done. So the only thing left, is the Aile Striker pack. Pretty sure that I need to pick up an action base for this guy at some point. He'll make a nice addition to my SEED collection. Right next to my RG Freedom and eventually the RG Justice. Also keep in mind that I have not put any decals on this guy yet. I prefer to do that After everything is done.

Lookin' good, man. Glad I could help out about the head. Yeah, as I'm sure you are aware the decals for a RG take about as long as it takes to build it :-P. I hate working with so many markings but the results are SO worth the tedium.

thwalker13
July 8, 2012, 8:14 PM
I agree. It took me forever to place the ones I used for my RG Freedom. And I didn't even use 1/2 of them. But like you said, they are well worth the extra time.

That is one VERY clean build man! This is the type of stuff i want to focus on when i start back to building. Great work.

July 9, 2012, 9:22 PM
Thank you sir. It's nice to get back to a straight out of the box build. I'd love to paint ever kit I get. But, it's really nice to just sit down and put it together. Here soon I hope to order a RG Mk. II from GS&M. That will be my next project. After that, the base for my MG 00 Raiser. Then, the 00 Raiser itself.

July 9, 2012, 11:58 PM
Totally agree about just sitting down and putting a kit together, very relaxing. And as always i'm looking forward to seeing your new work.

thwalker13
July 10, 2012, 12:06 AM
Well I hope that you all enjoy it. Cause after I get the RG Mk. II and the rest of the stuff I need for my 00 Raiser. I'll be taking a small break from Gunpla and saving up for a few things that I've been wanting for awhile. So we'll see how far my current to do list gets me.

thwalker13
July 13, 2012, 7:34 PM
Well, the Aile Striker pack has been put together. All it needs is lining and decals. That will come tomorrow. So by this time tomorrow, or a little after. The RG Aile Strike will be done. And I'll start one project #2. But until then. Here are some more pics for you guys.

Well guys. The RG Aile Strike is done. I've created an alternate thread for all my completed projects that I'll be working on in here. If you want to see the completed Aile Strike simply follow the link below. Either later tonight or tomorrow I'll start project #2. The Celestial Being Action Base for my MG 00 Raiser. Frankly I'm dreading this but I want to do it. Any who. Stay tuned guys. Much more to come.

Well I drug out the action base today so I could take a closer look at it and try to get an idea of just how to combat this thing. I tried using the tape, but it just did not seem to want to work. And with all the very small areas that would need to be taped. I just don't thing it's going to work. So, I'm just going to hand paint it as planned and just take my time and be as careful as possible. But I did take a few pics. And there will be more to come.

It shouldn't be to bad to paint if you use a combination of lacquer and enamel paint and wash it. It is really easy to do and the raised pieces will come out flawless. Just google reverse washes there are a couple of videos and blogs on it. It is how i did the gold parts on sinaju.

Loving the RG - I'm always surprised by how much detail they have :D

I've painted this base before. The trickiest part is the globe/Earth part. But I have confidence in your abilities. You'll do just fine.

So I placed an order from GGinfinite and GS&M on Friday. Got home from work today, and the stuff below was waiting for me. The items from GGinfinite shipped out on Friday and got here today. GGinfinite just got huge rep points from me. The markers from GS&M hasn't even shipped yet. Pretty sad. But, Below is project #3. The RG RX178 Mk.II Titans.

P.S.
I know the decals on this kit will be very visible because of the dark plastic. And by visible I mean the "clear" part of the sticker. Is there anyway at all that I can get rid of that? Because on this particular kit it'll just look tacky seeing all that filmy area around the decals.

thwalker13
July 18, 2012, 12:29 AM
Well I got super bored tonight and decided to do some painting. I managed to get all the yellow done on my Celestial Being action base. It needs a 2nd coat to even it out, but I think it turned out really well.

Get out a straight edge ruler and trim all of the excess off the decals. It's a pain in the neck but that's really the only way to deal with the excess unless you use water slides.

Although i must say, bandai's sticker/decal quality has really improved and if you put it on carefully enough you can hide it pretty well. Especially with a few coats of clear over it

Testors enamel paint. I have the starter set that includes all the basic colors.

Testors enamel paint. I have the starter set that includes all the basic colors.

Back in my day the Testor's basic set included Green and Gold and the tray had a whole row of little molded in mixing pots.

thwalker13
July 18, 2012, 12:35 PM
Still does. Mine has all those.

Joe
July 18, 2012, 5:25 PM
Awesome, did yours come in the tall box with the window or the smaller long box? I just recently was given a couple of the latter (the very basic set; one brush, on tray, white, black, silver, red, yellow, blue, and thinner) and I know they used to sell them as I described above. Now you have to buy a larger set to get mixing trays molded into a plastic organizer, and the other colors.

thwalker13
July 18, 2012, 5:30 PM
Mine didn't come with all that. Just the colors inside a clear plastic container with the mixing bowls made into it. It might have come with a brush or two but I don't remember.

thwalker13
July 19, 2012, 8:53 AM
Well last night I painted the globe area blue. I went ahead and painted over the "Earth" as well. I figured it would be easier to do it that way and paint that area green than try to keep the green and blue separate. And yes, I'm going to paint the ground areas green. I don't really like the light blue on blue look so I'm going green. (no pun intended) The blue does need another coat because a lot of white streaks can be seen. So after that I'll paint the green on and go from there. I'm trying to find a nice light blue that I can use instead mixing one. So once I find that I'll pretty much have this project wrapped up.

little late to this thread myself but glad I'm not the only one who is annoyed by the all white-ness of this particular stand. I too was planning on painting mine once I got around to building my exia.

thwalker13

Got a small update. I went over the blue a 2nd time. Got a little bit of blue onto the yellow. So I'll have to fix that once the blue dries. But it's looking great so far. The green is up next and after that the lettering.

Also, I got a package from Gundam Store and More today. I ordered some Gundam markers and they came in the mail. I got Gundam Blue, Red, White, Yellow, and Grey. I plan on using these to touch up the nub marks on my 00 Raiser. So hopefully this plan of attack will work out great.

Joe
July 19, 2012, 11:08 PM
Those Gundam Markers should do the trick just fine. Can't wait to see the finished base!

thwalker13
July 19, 2012, 11:11 PM
Me either now that I've started on it. Shouldn't take me to long really. Then I can get started on the RG Mk.II

thwalker13
July 22, 2012, 12:47 PM
Well I keep hitting one set back after another on this base. Last night I finished the green and I'm pretty happy with it. I show it to my wife and she is unhappy with how the yellow looks. So she takes it upon herself to paint over the yellow that I did with a larger brush. Granted it does now look a lot better. I'll admit that. However she then takes the initiative to paint the letters. I had planned to put a small amount of paint in each letter and use either a scalpel or a little thinner to remove any access. Well, she basically pours paints into the letters then using the thinner smears it everywhere. Well, it's ruined. I had to completely paint over all the letters with my new white Gundam Marker. Now I'm trying to color the letters with my lining marker to salvage what's left of the project. Will try to post up pics tonight if I can get everything back on track.

Let's see 'em :)

thwalker13
July 22, 2012, 3:07 PM
Alright. I have finally gotten this project back on track. I've gotten the letter colored in. And I've got all the access places touched up. All it needs now is the light blue added to the leafs and the outermost ring. Which brings me to a question. Do you guys thing it would look good to add some black inside that groove that separates the "texted ring" and the outermost ring? I should be able to use my lining marker to get into it. I think it might look pretty good. Anyways, here are some pictures of the project as it is.

July 22, 2012, 3:11 PM
I think the black would look good, but depending on how it looks, you may end up panel lining the whole thing...

Looking good, though! I'm glad your wife was able to help with the yellow, but man, you give them one little edge, they think they can just walk all over your project! :-P j/k, she meant well enough and it turned out well in the end.

thwalker13
July 22, 2012, 4:54 PM
Yeah I'm just glad that I was able to fix it. And as much trouble as it was to panel line over that white paint. I do not plan on panel lining the whole thing. No way. lol. But I suppose After I paint up the outer ring. I'll try to add some black inside that groove. Thanks for the words of encouragement Joe.

D-Smith
July 23, 2012, 3:15 AM
maybe try an enamel wash. clear coat it glossy then do your wash and depending on what you want you can clear coat it flat or gloss. it will give you a much more even dark look in the grooves and its much easier to apply rather the gundam marker which tends to kinda push the ink around as i am sure you know and gives you that less then desirable blotchy look

thwalker13
July 23, 2012, 7:19 AM
I did over the lettering again after I let some of the ink dry. And it's a lot darker than it was during the time these photos were taken. The base doesn't look perfect but I'm happy with it. I'm hopefully going to be picking up some light blue paint today so that I can continue on with the project. Then finally start on the RG Mk.II

thwalker13
July 24, 2012, 1:37 PM
I don't have an update on the base yet. Hopefully be testing out some French Blue paint I got tonight. Hopefully it'll be what I'm looking for. But, I thought that I would take some time and fill you all in on what I plan on saving up for next. I'll provide links for both below full of awesome high res photos. But it does mean I'll be taking a break from Gunpla for awhile. Which I'm sure the 00 Raiser will keep me in the game for awhile. But I want these 2 items very badly and I plan on getting them before I get another Gundam kit. Here are the links, enjoy the awesome sauce.

there's something I can agree with you on. I do like the colors of the titans but hate their tactics in war. I still feel it would be neat if they made a side story of the in-between period of Stardust Memory and Zeta, because there are a few Titan models that never show up in any of the cartoons granted they show the GM-Quel at the end of SDM. I feel the Titans had been given a bad name only because of the few rotten commanders in the ranks, with out them they are nothing but a bunch of soldiers taking orders.

thwalker13
July 25, 2012, 11:05 PM
That's very true. A lot of the Titan soldiers actually knew what they were doing was wrong. However they knew if they didn't follow orders they to would fall victim to the ruthless aggression of Basq. I hated that man. So glad when he finally bit the space dust.

The base is done guys and gals. I need to remove some access paint with my knife and top coat it. But the painting is all done. I think it looks awesome and I'm really happy with how it turned out. Now it just needs an awesome looking 00 Raiser sitting on it to complete it.

I like it cause looking at the original picture. I just felt there was to much blue. You've got blue water with blue land. And a blue ring with blue leaves. That is way to much blue for my taste.

Well last night I top coated the the action base. And started on my RG Mk.II.

The action base, well. Apparently the top coat didn't like the lettering. Cause it has smeared everywhere while the top coat was drying. So I'm at a loss at what to do here.

The Mk.II on the other hand. Has started out great. I got some Chrome Silver paint and painted up the hydraulics in the feet. And it looks awesome so far. Going to try to put the inner frame together today. I'll be sure to try to take some pics.

thwalker13
July 29, 2012, 11:46 PM
Down below is a pic of how the base turned out. I'm rather disappointed that after all that work it turned out like this. But I really don't know how to fix it. Nor do I have the motivation anymore.

Well I got the inner frame of the Mk.II done. However a small little tab in the arm broke. :( That has been glued and is currently drying. So tomorrow when it's dry I'll take some pics of the frame in a few poses. And I'm also going to do something that I really have not seen done yet. I'm going to compare this RG to my old HG kit that I got when I was little.

It was a small tab located in the arm. On a part that swings downward and attaches to the forearm into a sliding track that allows for the outer cover to move as the arm bends.

Thank you, I mixed it myself. I'm thinking I may need to panel line mine too.

What kind of topcoat did you use? That is awful!

I used Model Masters High Gloss Top Coat. Same kind as I've used before.

That is really weird the way it messed with your paint... How long between painting and top coating?

thwalker13

The letters wasn't paint. It was done with a lining marker. And I let it sit for a good 24 hours before I top coated it.

This is just so strange to me. I've never had a topcoat do that to a lining marker of any brand... Bummer, dude. Just consider it weathered :-). After all Celestial Being has seen some really tough times *cough* end of season one *cough*.

Well, I took some pics of the inner frame. Along side it's predecessor the HG Mk.II. Should make for a pretty interesting comparison.

I think those MGs are rather old, surely the HGs that they released like last year for God and Master would have better posibility than the old MG?

Either I approve of any and all G Gundam anything!

I don't have that many MG kits, and the reviews that I have watched about Master and God Gundam seem extremely positive even when compared to new MGs. So after watching reviews and the actual series. I was sold.

I debated for a long time on whether to get the MG 2.0 of the RX-178 or wait for the RG. And I decided to go with the RG and so far, it was well worth it.

Not like I would know. I was jut pointing out that the HG might be better, plus I don't know about the MG but the HG Master Gundam comes with Fuunsaiki. And I love Fuunsaiki, I wish they'd release just a model of that. That way I could have God and Master riding around lol. And I'd buy a 3rd one so my Exia could ride.

Don't you want a Fuunsaiki? :-P

thwalker13
July 31, 2012, 11:05 PM
I actually have not gotten to that part in the anime. So I know very little about Fuunsaiki. All I know is that it's mobile horse? That other Gundams can ride on. That also requires a bit of painting and panel lining to make it look good. (which I wouldn't mind that) However I think I'd still rather have the MG versions.

Having built the MG and the HG God Gundam recently-ish, I will say they are both enjoyable builds. The MG has a really cool frame, and it's a decent size, and looks very true to the Anime. I like the hands and the bottoms of the feet being made of rubber. The feet get a good grip on your display surface. I had mine standing in a one footed pose for months on a shelf that shakes anytime you walk buy it and the God Gundam fell only once. The HG is extremely articulate! - even more so than the MG. It has some details that the MG doesn't, as well, giving it an updated look. The HG seems a bit too tall for it's scale, but that didn't bother me. The MG might be a touch short for it's scale though too...

Having built both, I don't have to choose; but if I could only pick one... Well, I don't want to sway you :-P.

thwalker13
August 1, 2012, 7:29 AM
I'd say the shortness stems from Gundam from the FC timeline are a bit shorter than that of other Gundams. Especially from UC. But from the way you put you wording Joe. I'd say that you would choose the HG kits over the MGs.

Well I got the legs put together and lined last night. I'm waiting til I have everything put together to tackle the decals. Which seems to be my customary way of doing things. Speaking of, I plan on using a flat top coat on this guy in an attempt to hide the decals outer edges that are supposed to be clear. Should I put the foil stickers on after this? Cause won't the flat coat take away the metallic shine of them?

Any ways, here are some pics comparing the RG to the old HG kit.

You can really see how much Bandai has sleeked up and thinned the legs of this guy for the RG version. You can also see a crap ton of dust on my HG from where he's been sitting on shelf for years.

These RG kits are so awesome!

I would probably get the HG God if I could only get one, yes. But, they are both our of scale for what they are labeled as. HG God Gundam is taller than my HG RX-78-2 by a noticeable amount. My MG God Gundam is noticeably shorter than my MG RX-78-2... So yeah, they are out of scale in opposite directions.

Your HG Mk II isn't dusty, it's weathered :-P.

Ok boys and girls. It's been awhile since I had the time to update this thread. But now is as good as ever. I've gotten a lot of work done on the Mk.II since I last posted. It's pretty much done. The entire MS is built and lined. The thrusters on the backpack are not currently attached because they are undergoing some slight painting for some added detail. All that really remains are the shield, rifle, bazooka, and vulcan pod. After that, decals and top coat. I'm hoping to have it done by this weekend so I can start the bigger project. But, here are some pics for you guys. Notice the amount of detail the RG has compared to the old HG.

Ok, last night I finished putting together the RG Mk.II Titans. Everything has been put together. However there are still a lot of things that I need to do. I've decided that I'm going to do some detail painting here and there to add in some detail to the accessories. My own personal touch basically. Sorta like the work I did on my Banshee kits. After all the details have been painted, it's time for decals. And then top coat. After that, it'll be done. I must say though. I'm dreading the decals on this kit. There are just so freaking many of them. :( But, I have pics of it all put together.

But, I plan on doing some work with it as well. So, I'll leave you guys with this pic. And I'll update you all when this project is done.

nice fix and I'm almost done with my MK.II as well just need to finish the shield and weapons and then off to the hundreds of decals I have to apply lol, and sorry for being a stickler and pointing that out I'm just anal about having parts line up and making sure it looks correctly also I did want to ask were you not applying the boosters to the RG kit I look at your pics and notice that they are not on. Don't take any offence to it I was simply just suggesting to fix it =b other than that they both look great and I too am noticing the little differences between the two and between the MG and PG since I have both the OG MG Mk.II and the newer 2.0 version and just the PG alone is fun to compare too since there is a lot of elements smashed into the little RG kit.

thwalker13
August 8, 2012, 1:43 PM
The boosters are off cause they are currently being painted. And I probably won't put them on til after I clear coat. Cause they are pretty shiny. So I don't want to ruin that with a dull coat. In fact a lot of the parts will be removed for detailing. Then put all back together after clear coating.

And it's cool about finding that mistake. I had never noticed it all these years so it's fine man. lol

August 8, 2012, 9:51 PM

August 8, 2012, 10:03 PM
I still prefer the MG Mk II 2.0 to the RG. D-Smith, I don't think RG are really that much better than MG. Aside from their size to detail ratio being such a novelty, I think modern Master Grades are still superior.

August 8, 2012, 11:23 PM
I debated long and hard on getting either the MG 2.0 or the RG I finally went with the RG. So far I'm very happy with my choice. As for which is superior. I'd still that the MG are superior. However I do like the RG kits and I plan on getting the RG Justice to go along side my RG Freedom.

thwalker13
August 9, 2012, 10:11 PM
Well I got all the painted details done. Now I basically just have to put on all the decals. And that will probably take all weekend.

thwalker13
August 10, 2012, 10:08 PM
Got some more details painted. And I got all the decals put on except for the chest, arms, legs, and the beam rifle. Done includes shoulders, waist, shield, back pack, and the bazooka. But, I did a little experiment. I took a decal that I wasn't going to use and placed it on an extra piece from my Zaku I Ramba Ral Custom. And sprayed it with my dull coat. The results were, less than expected. So, I will not be clear coating my RG RX-178 Mk.II Titans. However, it should be done tomorrow.

New update, with a new project.

I have officially started the MG 00 Raiser project. This build is going to take me awhile to complete due to the fact that I have decided that I want the outer armor to be top coated with a high gloss. And the inner frame to be left untouched. I think it will make for a great looking contrast. I am also going to be doing some custom details, and some custom water slide decals. I've got the entire head unit cut out and ready for prep and paint. I'll try to get up some pics. I also got all 5 LED units up and running. Well guys keep looking for updates, cause there will be a lot of them.

thwalker13
August 19, 2012, 11:16 AM
Well this morning I did a test spray of the top coat to see what would happen. And surprise surprise. It made my lining run. Just like it did on the action base. So now, I'm going to have not only strip all the top coat off the test part. But go back and take all the lining off each part of the head, top coat, and I guess do the lining after the top coat dries. All this advanced modeling stuff is really making me miss the good ol' days of modeling.

FelksStrike
August 19, 2012, 1:51 PM
that sucks more work in to it. I did the panel lining on the strike and it did the same so more lining for me until after paint .

thwalker13
August 19, 2012, 2:49 PM
Yeah it does. But I was able to get all the parts cleaned off. So now I just have to wait til they're good dry so that I can top coat them.

Joe
August 19, 2012, 2:51 PM
That is just so weird. I've never had a topcoat mess with my lining before.

thwalker13
August 19, 2012, 6:37 PM
I don't know man. I gave the lining a good 48 hours to dry. But as soon as the top coat was applied. It started to smudge all over the place. So my only option seems to be to place the lining on top of the clear coat. Hopefully I won't have any trouble out of that method.

thwalker13
August 20, 2012, 7:38 AM
GAH! Has anyone ever had problems with bubbles popping up in the their top coat? I keep having bubbles appear while my top coat is drying.

August 22, 2012, 7:39 AM
Well after much torment and agony I have finally got the head of the 00 Raiser all put together. The water slide decals on the "ears" didn't turn out that well but I'm hoping for better results on the larger decals. I will say that the decal on the jewel turned out phenomenal. Adding the clear coat over it made the entire decal vanish except for the wording. I don't think you can really tell in the photos, but I love the way the glossy armor contrasts with the standard plastic look of the rest of the head. Can't wait to see how that turns out elsewhere. I plan on starting the torso here soon. I'll post pictures of the inner when it's all done.

It'll be awhile. It seems to be an up hill battle with this clear coat. More bubbles and it caused the touch marker to become extremely dark and run everywhere.

thwalker13
August 25, 2012, 11:11 AM
Ok. I have an answer as to why my clear coat is being such a bitch. Apparently the clear coat that my mom picked up, is meant to be used in conjunction with specific paints. And since I'm not using those paints. The clear coat is breaking down my real touch marker, and lining marker to the point where it's running all over the place. I've been advised to get an enamel based clear coat. Or, use the flat clear coat I have over the part, then use the gloss. Will doing that affect the over all look of the part?

thwalker13
August 26, 2012, 10:01 PM
Got the torso together. Complete with the LED unit. Also started the right arm tonight. Going to attempt a different top coating method to see if it will solve my issues. At least until I can get my hands on some enamel top coat. Until then, I guess I'll just figure something out. But for now, here are some pics for you guys.

August 27, 2012, 7:58 AM
I watched Rrobbert184's reviews of both kits. I do like some of the things that come with the Seven Sword, however I just couldn't give up the 0 Raiser and the GN Sword. So I went with the 00 Raiser. And so far, I'm not disappointed in my choice. I'm enjoying the build and if I could just get my top coat straightened out. Everything would be great. Surprisingly I'm also enjoying the use of those water slide decals. I remember when I was little I was scared to death of those things. Now, I love them. And they look so good after a nice coat of Solvaset and top coat.

I've never cared much for the 0 Raiser. The lack of a GN Sword is kind of regrettable, though.

thwalker13
August 27, 2012, 9:28 AM
The GN Sword was the biggest selling point. I've dabbled with the thought of ordering all the parts for a 2nd one and have my 00 Raiser duel wield them. However it would be horrifically expensive to do so. I have also considered getting the Seven Sword and combining it with my 00 Raiser. To create the 00 Raiser Seven Sword, or the 00 Seven Sword Raiser. Which ever you prefer.

August 27, 2012, 9:46 AM
Eesh, I just looked up the cheapest I could find the parts for another GN Sword. You'd be looking at around $50 as an optimistic minimum.

thwalker13
August 27, 2012, 10:01 AM
yeah the site I got quoted was around 70 bucks. So I quickly scrapped that idea. I could buy an entire MG 00 Raiser for about that price. Have tons of extra parts.

I so wanted the GN sword for the HG 00 Raiser but the price are nuts, but my girl got me the MG Seven Sword so he will be bump up the list to be the next project. On a side note Ive been watching Gundam 00 and gundam Zeta on my down time because this storm that is still in south Florida..

thwalker13

Both are great animes. I have the 2nd season of 00 on DVD. And I watched Zeta online. was really impressed with it. You planning anything special with your Seven Sword?

Joe
August 27, 2012, 2:39 PM
This build is coming along very well. It's making me want to bust out my HG 00 Raiser Designer's Colors or HG 00 Seven Sword/G! Maybe one of those will be a quick build to re-energize me so I can get back to work on my Wing kits.

thwalker13
August 27, 2012, 3:07 PM
Using the water slide decals is what's got me excited over this kit. I've never used them before cause I always remembered watching dad use them on his car models. How delicate and seemingly difficult they were to work with. But so far I haven't had much trouble yet. But the larger decals are still to come. Joe I hope you're able to over come your builders block. I'd just take a nice long break after the revival project is done. That's what I'm planning on doing after I finish the 00.

Joe
August 27, 2012, 4:32 PM
I will be taking a break after the project is done, but my part of the project isn't done until all my Wing kits are built. I need to figure out a way to sand my kits easier. *looks at dremel* I need to get some more drums for that rotary tool...

thwalker13
August 28, 2012, 12:27 AM
Lol, I haven't gotten that far into customization yet. Some sand paper is all I need for now.

August 28, 2012, 8:33 AM
Well the trick that my local hobby store gave me to use fixed my bubbling issue. However having the flat coat underneath the gloss coat isn't producing the look that I'm wanting to achieve. I might try to apply another layer of gloss to my test part tonight and see what happens then. Also going to try and put some of the decals on the arm parts. Assuming I feel like it. Right now I'm not feeling all that great.

Model Masters Lacquer over coat is what I have been using. However I plan on switching to an enamel based top coat once my hobby shop guy get's in his shipment that he ordered.

Joe
August 28, 2012, 1:06 PM
Lacquer?! that's what's eating your panel line ink! Lacquer paint eats everything under neither it, even chemically bonding to plastic. Now the clears are a bit milder, but they can still eat some paints. I use an acrylic topcoat and I've never had it eat anything under it. I will say lacquer is the most durable and it's gloss is almost always perfectly smooth and shinny. I've had acrylic gloss coats just come out like orange peel, and the weather had nothing to do with it, as far as I could tell. Future is the only good and consistent acrylic clear gloss.

Anyway, what was the trick your hobby shop told you about? Or did I miss that somewhere in conversation so far?
Hope you feel better, dude.

Gundamben831
August 28, 2012, 2:29 PM
I feel his pain with top coat's only because I just decided to stop using them in general. I had too many incidents where the panel lining would run even after I let it dry, it was the most annoying thing ever. If I were to ever choose to top-coat again I would just do that step first and then panel line afterwards because it is easier to line when there is paint for some reason and you only have to line over once.

thwalker13
August 29, 2012, 7:43 AM
Anyway, what was the trick your hobby shop told you about? Or did I miss that somewhere in conversation so far?
Hope you feel better, dude.

To lay down a base of regular flat top coat. Then a layer of the gloss top coat that I have. Cause the apparently the gloss top coat I have is designed to work with specific lacquer paint only. So applying it directly to the part is causing the problem. I have tried this method and in order to make the parts as glossy as I want it need at least two layers of the gloss coat. But, I've been doing the same thing as Gundamben. Top coating then lining on top of it. Save a lot of time and headache. I've also got some enamel top coat on order so hopefully that will make things easier.

Edit: So last night I really didn't get anything done on the 00 Raiser. However I was able to do a little work on my Strike Freedom. I found some add on parts on eBay that I just could not pass up. They came in the other day and last night I put it all together. If you're curious about this mysterious item, click the link below.

August 30, 2012, 2:24 PM
Just put the decals on the arm armor. Waiting for them to dry so that I can add on another douse of Solvaset. Then later tonight if everything is dry, I'll add on the 1st layer of top coat.

thwalker13
August 31, 2012, 9:51 PM
Well I applied the top coat. And a few parts came out looking fine. While others bubbled up again. This project is really starting to piss me off. I have no more paint thinner to remove the bubbles, and that other clear coat has yet to come in at the local hobby store. Not a happy Gunplaer right now.

thwalker13
September 1, 2012, 11:41 AM
You're telling me. I'm determined to get the project done. Though I'm thinking I'm just going to get some more thinner, fix the parts I'm working on now, start the next arm, and get all the parts ready for clear coating. Then just put everything on hold until I can get some new clear coat. Cause I'm honestly tired of dealing with this crap. This project was not supposed to be taking this long. (sigh) Just makes me want to take a break from Gunpla even more.

Ok, got the armor onto the right arm. And if photobucket would work hopefully posting some pics of it. Going to try and get the left arm started tonight. I've learned from a small test that this new top coat does not affect my touch up markers or my panel lining. So I'll be able to place neat panel lining under the top coat from now on. I must say though, I like the final product of the lacquer more than the enamel. The enamel has had 48hrs to dry and cure. And it still feels sticky and soft. Where as the lacquer has hardened and feels like plastic. But I guess that's just the difference I'll have to live with. Anyways, hope you all enjoy the pics. If they work.

The XN Raiser is basically a better 0 Raiser, but as Saji wasn't one for violence CB never made it. There was a side story in which Saji wished he could do more on the battlefield so the Haro unti he had loaded up the plans for the XN Raiser. It's one of a few special releases for 00, there was this the XN Raiser, then there was the GN Sefer, the Quanta Full Saber, Astraea conversion parts before they released an Astraea and a Raisiel Gundam (I don't even think it had a grade). All 1/144 scale.

It has been up til now. But with this new clear coat and the method I'm using. It seems to be working just fine. This clear coat seems to take a few days to fully dry and cure. So while the parts are drying I just start up on the next section. And the time it takes me to get the next set of parts ready for clear coat. The previous set is dry and ready to be placed on the inner frame. So everything works out just right.

Just built up the right leg and got all the armor parts on the rack for prepping. And later tonight I hope to have the left leg built up. I swear the order on how they have you build gundams really makes me scratch my head sometimes. You'd think that they would have you make the head torso, then the waist arms and legs but instead is usually Head/chest then arms then legs and then waist and sometimes after that backpack and weapons but I like to cheat and have the torso/head/waist all built before I attack the arms and legs (sometimes...) but more or less I usually follow the instructions like a robot =/

thwalker13
September 19, 2012, 1:43 PM
Yeah I normally follow the instructions as well. Simply cause I like to be able to keep track of where I am. I'm just trying to get the MS done. I want to see it stand on it's own two feet finally. Then after the backpack. Weapons. I'm well on my way though. I just put all the decals onto the left leg. Waiting for them to dry so that I can more Solvaset onto them.

Thanks guys. Asterisk, as soon as I read your comment. I thought of that episode of That 70s Show when Kelso is at Red's door, with no pants.

Progress is looking great! I'm looking foward to seeing it coupled with the action base.

Thanks Jaqio. I should be able to put the leg armor on either tonight or tomorrow. I'm hoping to get the decals onto the waist section tonight. After I get the backpack done and a few of the weapons. I'm going to do some basic poses on the action base. I can't wait for that.

Got the armor onto the legs. And it's looking awesome.

Here are a few shots of backside. I put in some custom touches around the knees to add some detail.

so why is it that the sticker design is so well unsymmetrical. I just have always wondered why the sticker design was so strange for the 00 Series.

thwalker13
September 23, 2012, 6:43 PM
I've thought that exact same thing. I have an OCD of symmetrical. And it honestly bugs the crap out of me that it's so different on the left side. However, I get over it cause it looks so good from being just so bland. That's one of the reasons I wanted to use these decals with this kit. Cause it originally doesn't have all that many decals at all. And I wanted it to look, different than most other 00s. And not be as bland and dull. It's been a lot of work. But it's really started to come together. I'm just really worried about the huge decals that go onto the 0 Raiser.

Thank you sir. I just top coated the the waist section. So here in a few days I should have a completely armored up 00 Gundam. I cannot wait.

September 25, 2012, 12:21 AM
Just built up the frame work to the backpack. Got some touch up work, some painting, decals, and other things to do with the armor before clear coating. Super excited to get the whole 00 Gundam finished.

Speaking of. I got a bottle of Alclad II Chrome paint. I tested it out on an old runner. And it honestly looks like water with some silver flake in it. Has anyone used this stuff? Am I doing something wrong with it?

Squee
September 25, 2012, 12:30 AM
Alclad is prethinned for airbrushing. It is not made for handpainting. It must be airbrushed. It's literally like 10% pigment, and 90% thinner.

Dlinker
September 25, 2012, 12:53 AM
I've seen what people can do with it and it's amazing stuff. If you ever get a chance to do some airbrushing later on, at least you have it ready for experimenting with.

On a different note, your kit is looking fantastic. The decals look like they're painted on the plastic itself. So straight and proper, you know?

thwalker13
September 25, 2012, 12:05 PM
Ah, well I see why it's not looking right. Thanks Squee.

Thanks Dlinker. I'm very particular on decals. So I'll spend a lot of time to make sure they are in the perfect place. The solvaset that Joe recommended has really been an awesome help with them. And the clear coat just makes them look even better.

Got a new update for everyone. The waist armor has dried and is now sitting on the 00. So, I have some new photos for everyone. I hope that you all like the custom painting I did on the beam sabers. I thought they needed some cool work done to them since they aren't your run of mill sabers. I also have the armor to the backpack and GN Drives on the rack right now. Just finished doing some touch up work and lining. I'm also going to try something new with the thrusters. I'm hoping they turn out great. I'll update everyone soon.

Here is a shot of the beam sabers. I painted the raised area on the sides gray. And the very tips chrome.

This is seriously looking very much like the Metal Build version. Amazing! I'm really digging the finish and the decals. Also, good call on the accents to the saber hilts.
Now you got me in suspense about the thrusters.

September 27, 2012, 1:48 AM
Thanks man. I'm totally loving the gloss on non treated inner frame. The 00 is almost like it was made for this. And I'll try to post up pics of them tomorrow. And the decals, boy. This is the 1st time I've used water slides. And I must say, I love them. Put a nice layer of top coat over them. And you can hardly tell. Amazing. But, I do have an update. All the armor and GN Drives of the backpack have been clear coated. Probably be starting up the weapons tomorrow. Or, today. Seeing how it's almost 2am.

Gundamben831
September 27, 2012, 2:22 PM
I like how clean this 00 is coming out, the decals are something else though even though I commented on how they are not that symmetrical even though that stated I really like the look of it. I want to say it gives the prototype kind of feel but also flagship model as well.

thwalker13
September 27, 2012, 8:15 PM
Yeah I'm really glad I decided to use the decals. The whole kit would have kinda felt, dull to me. The decals really set it off and make it come alive in my opinion.

But, I have a few updates. I've taken a few pics of the thrusters. So anyone who is dying of anticipation can relax. I've also got the weapons all built up and waiting for their decals. I've also put in some special custom touches to them as well. So I hope you all like those. So, here are the thrusters.

Not sure if you can tell what I did, but I'll tell you. I laid down a base of Chrome Silver. Then instead of putting red over it. I laid down 2 coats of clear red. For that awesome chrome red look. Then put a touch of bronze in the very center. I think they turned out amazing. What do you guys think?

Yeah the pics are a bit out of focus. Couldn't get my phone to focus properly. I'll try to get a better shot when I get the armor put on. And yes, the entire thruster was painted chrome silver.

Thanks man. I was hoping that they would. I did a lot of work on the GN Sword IIs and the Katars today. And they are all looking awesome. Can't wait to get them clear coated.

Oh ok. I gotchya. I actually have not put any form of top coat on the thrusters or the backpack. Just paint on the thrusters.

That's probably the smoothest plastic part I've seen yet, no faults at all that I can see from that photo. That's a good thing since it will match the rest of the immaculate kit. Any difference in how enamel clear coat behaves in general compared to what you were using before?

thwalker13
September 28, 2012, 5:32 PM
The only difference that I can really tell is that it takes a lot longer to fully dry and harden than the lacquer based clear coat that I was using. Other than that, and the lack of bubbling, I haven't found any significant differences.
