Much like for my finished kits i'll be putting all my wips in this thread to keep from flooding the board.
At the moment i'm not working on any kits but i would like to share some pics of my older kits that i happen to have wip photos for.

My idea was not to do any Char Aznable type of ms scheme or anything, all that i knew is that i wanted multiple redish shades.
I wanted to go high gloss from the start but i at the time i was unable to properly discern the thinning ratio for my gloss paints so whenever i shot the stuff out of my brush it would dry to an patchy finish? Which is like "Most Untriumphant".

Wooo, I always like the design of the Z'gok. Can't wait to see what you do with it.

In total agreeance about Z'Goks design. It just has this big towering brutish look to it, and like kampher it has alot of presence to it.

Love the Kampfer. I've been debating on getting the MG for years now.

jaqio
June 14, 2012, 8:47 PM
Yeah i'd say go for it. I bought one a few months ago myself and belive me when you have this kit fully weoponized, WOW!
Things to look out for though are, it uses screws in the arm joints which depending on ones own preferance is a good or bad thing. The knee joints aren't the greatest, but it is an older kit. Also if you paint it i'd suggest poseing it carefully, cause the paint will scratch off of the mid arm joints. I know it sounds like alot of negativity but the positives FAR outway those. A TON of weopons! the likes of that you normally don't see on a gundam. Presence, bulky wide and just very mean and mech looking. A good simple build, not alot of small finiky parts to deal with. And it lend itself well to customs, if you look at certain blogs i'm sure you have seen some. LOL,Sorry about the salesman bit there!

Did I catch a Bill and Ted reference in the most untriumphant?

thwalker13
June 14, 2012, 9:11 PM
I've watched a few review on it. And I have come so close to putting it on my to buy list. Screws don't bother me, my Hi-Nu Gundam has them in the knees. I guess what scares me is it's just an older kit. And I know that it doesn't have the notches in the hands to help hold the weapons. Which aggravates me about my GP02 MG cause it just will not hold it's shield or beam sabers. But I'll probably bite the bullet cause I really do not have that many "Bad Guy" MGs on my list.

jaqio
June 14, 2012, 10:33 PM
No doubt about it. Good catch, lol.

jaqio
June 14, 2012, 10:58 PM
Yeah the older style mg hands are a definite no no. I painted the connection pegs on my kits hands so he has a solid grip. But man i tell you there are alot of kits i want that are old and have wonky proportions but it seems like the whole 2.0 thing may be over, the kits i want remade probably would not happen anyway. So yeah stuff like 08th ms and fa zeta i'll just have to bite the bullet on myself.

Squee
June 14, 2012, 11:01 PM
The 08th team stuff are all awesome! First kit w/ the ability to kneel. XD I own 5 kits using that frame.

Love the Z'Gok. One of my fav zeon suits. Can't wait to see more progress!

The only kit I really want to get the 2.0 treatment is the Wing Zero Custom EW OVA version. I want MGs of all the EW OVA Gundams. And I'd love to see Wing Zero actually be able to hold his awesome Buster Rifles without sticky tack.

I'll probably bite it and try to pick up the Kampfer.

And like Squee said. I can't wait to see more.

June 14, 2012, 11:39 PM
Thanks Squee. I really want to get the ground type, ez-8, GM sniper and gouf custom. So hearing that recommendations good enough for me.
I also really want some stardust memory kits as the Gp0's are amongst my favorites, but i've been trying to decide since last year if i should just spring for the perfect grade of that or strike freedom.

Well after an initial few thin coats of Future Floor Wax i started to see what i was intending to in color and glossyness. So this is when as usual with me at least, i started to completely change my mind on this kit. i started thinking about how cool it would look with an lighting system? But i'm not ready to try led mods yet so i'll show you guys my super simple solution next post.

Thanks guys.
Thats one of the things i thought while looking at these parts the other day is that i somewhat see an corrosive like effect on the parts which is unintentional but hey i'll go for it.

Yeah, i have such a backlog that i told my self early this year i was going to build everything i got by years end. But,i just keep buying so it's like i never deplete from my stock! Friggin' Gunpla addiction. Stay tuned as i've got some more weird color choices coming to the thread, such as Kampher for example.

Now as i said last post i really started thinking about how lighting would look on this kit. But what i wanted would mean i would have to carve up a good deal of the kit and plan out wiring routes and all these things i'm not able to do yet. On top of that i would have to strip the paint and start over again, No thanks! So while looking in my spare decal and stickers box i happened upon the sticker sheet to an HG Stargazer Gundam i never built. Now this kit has 2 identical sheets of stickers one gloss black the other a reflective green yellow color that when in the right lighting looks illuminated. So i got the hobby knife out and carved up the shapes i wanted and heres what i got.

It may not show well in these pics but when fully glossed it looks better. Unfortunatly these stickers are thick! so the backing shows no matter what i did.

Now for the eye visor all i did was paint the section where the monoeye will permanently be gazing toward clear yellow, and since the monoeye is painted Krylon brilliant gold it should produce an glowing effect when viewed in tadem.

Well thats how this lazy modeler wussed out on improving his skills yet again. But i really am going to tackle some of these techniques by years end, as Things like cleaner builds, pla-plating, kit bashing, led mods and better photography are things i'm thinking alot about now since joining this forum and getting some real good advice from you guys. Anyway thanks as always guys and sorry for just publishing an novel here.
Next post i'll show the other colors.

If i could just make a suggestion. Turn down the air pressure on your compressor or maybe thin your paint a little bit more. It will vastly improve the smoothness of your finish.

jaqio
June 16, 2012, 1:38 PM
Gotcha! i normally shade at 15psi and thin at slightly thicker than milk consistency.

D-Smith
June 16, 2012, 2:48 PM
i think your finish will be perfectly fine once its top coated and if you are not sure about your airbrushes limitations turning your psi down can totally fudge your spray up. i know anything below 12-13 psi my brush starts to go to crap. and in my experience less air doesn't always mean smoother finish it makes it easier to control the amount of paint when you are starting out but i think you are past that. 16-18 psi is what i shade at but everyone has there own way. just my two cents take it with a grain of salt because i think stuff like that is something you have to figure out with experience because everyone has different brushes, different compressors, different paints and different thinning ratios

jaqio
June 16, 2012, 3:38 PM
Great Points D-Smith. And the finish did get alot better after a few mists of topcoat.

DSmith you're right, but the way his coats look afterwards are the look of when you're spraying with too much psi.

D-Smith
June 16, 2012, 4:34 PM
i may be wrong but i dont think i am lol. the higher the psi the smoother the paint is gonna be because the air is gonna force the paint to mist more BUT if you don't have control you can over spray and have runs etc.. and that is why people lower there psi, to decrease the margain for error not to get a smoother finish. some brushes are better at spraying at lower psi then others and you don't notice the paint being any less smooth but a psi doesn't translate to a specific finish its just not being able to control your paint properly at the psi level.

jaqio i am not saying that you can't control your paint i am just talking in generalities. i think your shading once top coated will be perfectly adequit.

Squee
June 16, 2012, 5:11 PM
I think there's a miscommunication here as I'm not even talking about his shading. I'm talking about the final paint apps.

Raising the air pressure will not cause it to mist more. The spray/mist is controlled by how far back the needle is pulled allowing paint out of the tip of your airbrush. The only thing it will do is cause more to come out which isn't really necessary.

There are other factors though. The paint might not be thinned enough. You could be spraying to close to the part with too much pressure. Even your climate affects the way the paint is sprayed.

Here's a great article explaining what i'm talking about. http://www.craigcentral.com/models/pressure.asp

D-Smith
June 16, 2012, 5:14 PM
agree to disagree because i know for a fact that with less pressure the paint is going to disperse less its simple logic that you can put to the test very easily.

Squee
June 16, 2012, 5:16 PM
It has nothing to do with paint dispersal. It has to do with how hard the spray is hitting the part. Spraying too close and/or raising the psi does this. THAT is fact.

D-Smith
June 16, 2012, 5:36 PM
but spraying at 15psi is not gonna cause that lol maybe if you are spraying at 30 but 15 psi is already such a minimal mount of force i know plenty of painters better then you, me and anyone on here that spray at 15 or higher.

but everyone is different and like your handy little link he says the very first sentence there is no correct pressure i am just stating facts that i don't think you can disprove and i know i am right when i say that the higher the psi the more fine the paint mist will become and the smoother its gonna look. dependng on the brush however they can still get a perfectly good mist at lower psi but thats because they are engineered better. a not as nice airbrush just realizes its limitations earlier. all i can say is take your air brush and spray lines at the same distance at different psi and you will understand and you will also see to what level your airbrush is good to.

Squee
June 16, 2012, 5:41 PM
Did you even read past the first sentence?

Using an airbrush is not that different from the analogy above. When you are in close to the surface you need to use less pressure to prevent overspray. When you are farther away from the surface you need more pressure just to get the paint to the surface of the model. In the case of an airbrush though, even at low pressure the paint wil eventually get to the model's surface. The problem is that if it travels a good distance through the air it will dry, or partially dry, during the time it takes to get from the airbrush to the model. This causes a dimpling of the paint surface commonly known as "Orange Peel".

This is especially true when doing shading.

Anyways, it's like talking to a brick wall. jaqio check out my link and judge for yourself.

D-Smith
June 16, 2012, 6:12 PM
over spray happens because your spraying to much paint. with higher air pressure you have less control thats why that happens. Its not a direct effect of the pressure. OVER SPRAY means you SPRAYED TO MUCH. maybe you should learn from your own experience and not rely on someone elses experiences to make your judgemet.

Guys come on! Lets just let it go, i dont want in any way to cause discord among the members here. And as said this was done months ago so a can't change it now. I just wanted to post some pics of stuff i've done is all, as i've always have been interested in seeing peoples models come together from start to finish.
In no way do i want to come off as if i'm above critisism or help on being a better modeler as i know my stuff really isn't much to look at myself! i just enjoy actually communicating with others that are into the things that i like and also with those whose work inspires me.

Dragging up this old corpse of an thread from the cprypt!

Gundam Seed/Destiny. Some hate it some like it. Me, i'm not a fan. It actually killed my interest in the franchise as an whole untill i started building plamo thanks to the awesome Strike Freedom and Red frame astray! Then the Unicorn anime hooked me in for good.
Anyways as little interest as i have for seed/destiny, the kits for these are phenomenal! The proportions detail and design are just amazing! and They really have an unique style or flair in my opinion. So i'm trying to collect all of the master grades and real grades released from this line, particularly the new releases.. Well until the frozen teardrop stuff finally show up!..

Heres what i've been messing around with lately, Duel Gundam Assualt Shroud. I'm doing a little line work as i build it and it's in a very rough stage, as i have not cleaned it up yet besides some de-nubbing. I can't paint for a few months due to various conditions but i'll most likely go "ootb" colors.

Not at all. It's actually a pretty simple process to jump into. My suggestions though would be to watch an episode of "Plamo Tsukurou" where this guy modded and built the hguc nu-gundam and vegeta 8259's scribbing tuturial on youtube.I got all the information i needed to begin myself by watching those videos.

Also i'll say start off with an "needlepoint" metal spike style scribber first! as the hook end ones have a stepper learning curve. And make sure you dont forget the "dymo tape" and "fine grit" sandpaper to go along with it to.

Oh, it's outstanding! Plus your PG 00 looks great which put my unease about the kit's aesthetics to rest very neatly (I'll be displaying the 0 Raiser and 00 separated). I'll be adding LEDs to the condensers I think and wiring it up to be powered by a USB or a 9V battery, which is something I intend to perfect on my PG Wing Zero since 18 LEDs running off of 2 batteries just doesn't give the proper glow haha.

Yeah, I really have been looking for a good kit to try that effect on, and had recently seen someone do this to their jesta model and loved it! So now I just have got to try it myself.
Most of the nub removal was with a Tamiya metal file and micro mesh sandpaper. I think i used the knife about 25percent of the build.

Thank you Bossguy. I've really been trying to get better at this hobby but I was always so impatient with it, so my kits suffered on all levels for it.
So I totally appreciate the encouraging words. It helps me see that i'm making progressive steps with my kits.
And I know it sounds clichéd but, if I can do it, then I have no doubt that you can.

I've actually finished painting this kit before marasai. But I just want to burn of the wip pictures.
Funny thing is I worked on and off of this kit for a few months and had an lot of plans for it. But when I started painting I just did what I wanted to at the moment. Very fun!

June 11, 2013, 9:20 PM
I see what you did there with the mod. Simple, yet effective.

You prefer priming via spray can or via AB?

jaqio
June 11, 2013, 9:54 PM
I really want to prime using an airbrush mainly. But my attempts at doing so have (do to my own fault) been pretty awful.
Do you happen to know what's a good primer thinner and brush cleaner for Vallejo and Model Masters brands? I know people say you have to use the companies own brands and all, but that stuff can get costly.

Dlinker
June 12, 2013, 12:04 AM
Hmmm, I thought Vallejo Surface Primer can be thinned with water? I've only used that so that's all I can comment on. Maybe Windex too, since it's a commonly-used thinner for Vallejo Model Color paints.

What kind of issues did you run into with the Vallejo stuff? I always spray it out of the bottle as is and occasionally I either get tip-dry or it gets a little further inside the AB, requiring me to take it apart to clean the needle and loosen up the innards. I'm using a G44 with a .5mm needle, if that means anything.

jaqio
June 12, 2013, 12:39 AM
Thanks for replying. Tip dry is the problem I am having with the Vallejo primer. And the nozzle kind of gets difficult to get the debri out of also. Now keep in mind I don't use distilled water, and i read that tap water is a no-no! So like I said, it's most likely my fault. But as long as I know a good cleaning agent i'm comfortable trying it again. Cause some dude on scale model was saying you need their brand of cleaner.

But the Model Masters Primer Dried up in my iwata and it was like I shot wet cement thru the brush! I ended up having to buy another nozzle and needle.

Oh and for priming I was using my Iwata Revolution .5mm airbrush.

Dlinker
June 12, 2013, 2:13 AM
Ahh, I see. It happens to me often after spraying the primer for more than 15 minutes at a time. Once it gets clumped up in the needle point, I just use the smaller brushes from the Paasche Cleaning Kit to gently scrub it off (after dipping the brush in Windex) and it's back to spraying. I spray at 20 PSI, but it doesn't seem to matter for me in terms of reducing tip dry.

That dude is right in that the Vallejo cleaner works best, but Windex seems to work fine too. Does a good job of softening up the primer, which you can then wipe off (or even peel off) easily. If all else fails, you can use Simple Green too.

Final wip pictures for for my Jesta. And things have not been going so hot with this one!

I wanted to stay close to the original hues but could not really get a feel for the main color, as it looks dark blue-grey to me.
So I swapped it for an purple-grey instead, and that was not a good idea!
No matter how much I adjusted this color I could not get anything close to it. So I just said screw it! as I was wasting so much paint trying to get this right, and settled.

I'm actually kind of embarrassed to say, but i'm not even able discern what this color really is?

June 22, 2013, 1:34 AM
I laughed so freaking hard at the opening quote! It's exactly what I was thinking when I posed it.

I plan on using some styrene sheets to test some shading contrasts and how they effect the overcoat on Monday. I'll like to use some really light colors that will not have a huge tonal effect on the white parts like when I used blue-grey on my strike freedom last year. As the white parts ended up kind of pink colored.

I also got some mgm chrome powder that I may use on this.

thwalker13
June 22, 2013, 6:24 AM
Really nice affect man. I think it will look really good on the Strike. Are you thinking of adding battle damage as well?

jaqio
June 22, 2013, 12:06 PM
I'm still on the fence on if I want to weather it or not. as of now i'm thinking of probably just adding an extra amount of depth by using 2 tones of undercoat. But its a fine line you gotta walk when using white paint, as it seems so easily effected by other paints.

Dlinker
June 22, 2013, 1:00 PM
Yeah, white can be a pain and it's not easy to predict how it will look like with certain undercoats. When I put some light gray down for my Dynames to pre-shade the white on the legs, it came out way too strong and as a result, I needed to apply several more coats of white just to give it a feathered look. Before that, I was thinking how gray would be easier to pre-shade with white compared to black since it's not a complete opposite of the color...

Your mention of chrome powder intrigues me even more, haha.

jaqio
June 22, 2013, 1:30 PM
Personally, I happen to find white paint to be the hardest to work with. But enamel white is much easier than the acrylic variety, so i'll probably use that if i have any left.

I've actually used the chrome powder for a lot of testing last summer. And it's amazing stuff! It has like an mirror finish darkish iron color to it, and clear paints look very nice sprayed on top. I may use it on the inner frame and spray some clear blue mixed with a little pearl powder on top.

I'll show some samples when i get the chance to set up my painting area again next week.

Dlinker
June 22, 2013, 5:03 PM
I've read up on people using those powders before and I keep forgetting about it. Might give me another option for a sparkly paint instead of just relying on mixing existing metallic paints with non-metallics.

Maybe with keeping track of your thread, I'll remember it even more, haha.

I set-up my paint booth this afternoon and decided to test out my chrome powder after about an year of not using it. Seeing as I have to start with a gloss base.

Now firstly I want to say that my test do not best reflect the quality of this. When it's done properly, it looks very good.
The problem I ran into is that i seem to have a problem getting consistent paint to thinner ratios since I have started back at gunpla.
And I could not find the bag of cotton balls that I use the apply the powder properly. so I used a napkin to lightly rub the powder onto the parts.

I just wanted to show a few shots anyway so that people whom are interested in this stuff can get an idea of how it looks.
Hope that its helpful.

This is the kind of chrome powder I use.

Thanks Bro. It's called "MGM Super Magic Powder" and I purchased it from an seller on Ebay from China. I just looked for the seller I bought mine from and the store is no longer there. But, there where 3 others whom had it. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_nkw=electroplating+powder&_frs=1

It's like alclad in that you must start with an glossy base color, and it doesn't matter if it's acrylic. Then use a cotton ball and just dab it into a small amount of the powder, now you just start to buff the piece and keep adding more powder untill you get the finish you want.

Be careful with this stuff thou, as it really wants to stick to everything! So it's quite messy, but not hard to clean up.

Dlinker
June 23, 2013, 12:54 AM
Hmmm, very intriguing stuff and the results look to be worth it. I did a bit more googling on it and found a very similar product called Kosutte Ginsan.

It seems it's not easy to clear coat either. Have you done that before successfully?

Also, using clears for highlights is pretty fun to do. I did it on the GN Sword Bits during my tests earlier in the week and it led to some entertaining results.

jaqio
June 23, 2013, 2:08 AM
I think the product i'm using is a knock-off of the Kosutte Ginsan. As I've been aware of that for a few years before seeing mgm.

As for clear coating, I can't speak for Kosutte Ginsan. But I have had zero issues with gloss coating this stuff. Just build it up in layers like any other paint and your good to go.

I also agree about highlighting with clears. I'm thinking of fully detailing an inner frame using just clears to highlight it actually.
Maybe you could show some of those results you got when you get the time.

Dlinker
June 23, 2013, 2:30 PM
I actually posted some earlier in the week in my WIP thread. I painted half of a Sword Bit using clear red and the other half using a mix of Tamiya Clear and a tiny amount of Purple, then I tried blending the two together so it looks like it's overheated. I may stick with that effect, but it's still in the decision process.

It's interesting to see you were able to gloss coat that stuff just fine. I think I will give it a try one of these days and see how it turns out for me. How's the toxicity of it, though? You said it was messy so I'm thinking it's something to do very, very carefully.

jaqio
June 23, 2013, 4:19 PM
Ok! I remember seeing that now.
As for the toxicity? all that I can really say is that it has an very faint smell to it though not unpleasant. But a dust mask might be a good idea.

And yes! This is VERY messy stuff. It gets smeared on your hands and surrounding surface really easy. But soap and water works to get it off of your hands, and anything abrasive will get it off of a surface.

I know i'm making it sound like it's difficult and not worth the effort to try. But it really is quite simple to use. otherwise i would have never tried using this after the first time.

Amazing work and that paint job is such a treat to look upon. I don't know if you did those tiny mistakes on the metallic details on purpose, but they add to the kit's character.

Makes me regret that I didn't do a more creative paint job on my HGUC Jesta trio, haha.

Hell yeah man. I can't wait to get this kit myself. So I can't wait to see what you got in mind for this kit.

Dlinker
June 26, 2013, 4:28 PM
Oooh, interesting. Some panel lines and RG-like color additions.

I see you've become a fan of the nub-removal-by-sanding method too. I tried it for the first time on the Qan[T] and I found it to be much more satisfying than the hobby knife. I had to use the knife on the the clear parts, though.

jaqio
June 26, 2013, 6:44 PM
Yeah, I can never seem to completely get rid of those nubs with a knife without cutting into the kit. So I recently started using more of my sanding tools, and have found it so much easier to do now.

I still want to try to add more selective shading in areas, but I ended up marking off little areas here and there on the manual while looking over it. So now this projects going to take a little while longer than I wanted it to originally. Plus somehow I forgot that huge freakin base that I have to paint!

Dlinker
June 27, 2013, 12:36 AM
That base will certainly lengthen the project. Which makes me wonder if I should paint a base myself one of these days since it looks like a break from the norm. Hmmm, maybe the base for the Qan[T] is a good start.

Do you often adjust your plans in a way that ends up adding more work for you? Or are you pretty good at sticking to the original idea?

jaqio
June 27, 2013, 1:58 AM
Man, I never end up sticking to a plan. I normally change plans even while i'm painting. It's real annoying!

I've even changed my plans for the base while just simply straight building it. Now i'm going to add some details by masking off parts while painting and have also filled in some hollow areas with pla-plate. Now am breaking this build and paint job up in 3 separate sections because now I've got more to do to the kit.

But you know? I think it would be a good idea to try painting a base. As like you said, it is a break from the norm! And there are fewer parts to worry about.
You should of seen thwalker13's Celestial Being Action Base. Beautiful stuff! And Vegeta8259's Unicorn HD Cage is also very inspiring.

Here's Where i'm at now.

Very little progress today, but i think i can do something pretty decent with this. Also i need feedback on an idea.
I was thinking about using some small bits and strips of reflective tape on the base. But i don't want to make this thing gaudy! plus, i'm not getting such an good effect from it so far. Here is the best i could get.

thwalker13
June 27, 2013, 7:58 AM
1. Thanks for the kind words of my 00s Action Base.

2. I think the reflective tape is a great idea. I would for sure try to cut the stripes to a proportionate size. The one thing that would turn heads away from it are huge strips of tape on a small base. In that last picture, what exactly is happening to the tape?

jaqio
June 27, 2013, 11:45 AM
Your very welcome. That base was beautiful!

You hit the nail on the head regarding the tape. I see that it will be a very fine line I'll have to walk in using it, so proportionate size is completely the way to go. And on the last picture I had an led flash light aimed at the tape strips to see what direct light would look like hitting it.

Thanks for responding.

June 27, 2013, 12:01 PM
I was going to mention thwalker13's action base, haha. It really did look nice and despite a few paint difficulties, it was a straightforward process compared to the kit itself.

I'm terrible at sticking to the original plan also, even when I was still doing OOB builds with no painting. But, I guess that teaches us how to be more adaptable.

Is the reflective tape smoother in reality? It looks kinda textured from the pic. Regardless, small bits and strips here and there should be just fine. It may add some realism to it, since not everything is ultra smooth in real life. You could probably get away with using tin foil sprayed with a clear as well, haha.

thwalker13
June 27, 2013, 12:07 PM
I never stick to my plan. They are always changing.

I was thinking it looked rather textured as well. And here I thought it was just me. But I don't know how tin foil would work. How would he get it to stick to the base itself?

Dlinker
June 27, 2013, 1:21 PM
He may have to rely on some kind of glue, I think. Perhaps something that's not crazy adhesive (but sticky enough that it stays in place) so he can remove it easily if needed.

I've only tried it as backing on clear parts and even then, I didn't use any glue on the foil since the part kept it in place.

jaqio
June 27, 2013, 1:29 PM
Interesting idea.. And the surface is totally smooth on the tape it just has that flecked metal look underneath that covering.

I may do the foil thing now though. As honestly I just want a silverish color that has a shine to it.

Dlinker
June 27, 2013, 4:14 PM
Let us know how it goes. It may seem like an underhanded way of doing things (coming from the voice in my head saying "just paint the darn spot"), but if it looks good and serves the purpose you want it to serve, I don't see why you can't do it.

jaqio
June 27, 2013, 9:23 PM
Yeah I hear you.. I just look around the hobby area and see stuff laying around and begin to think, how could I put that on a kit?

I really like the effect that the light piping gives to the eyes.. So as for plan change #Infinity! I'll just spray some clear color on the cameras and try my hardest to paint the outer parts of the eyes without screwing it all up. As hand brushing is no longer something I can pull off!

No mods at all. I love it. And my hands just aren't as steady as they once where. Plus I have gotten so use to airbrushing everything that it's almost like I have got to re-train myself to use brushes again..

Eyes are really easy for me now. I just use the reverse wash. Perfect every time. After I painted my HG Tallgeese III by hand. I will never do that again. It's either details, or large painted areas with cans (soon to be airbrush) or nothing.

June 28, 2013, 11:22 PM
I was looking at a video about the reverse wash technique this afternoon, and i think i'll give it a shot.
Because now i'm noticing that the light piping effect was just the result of my lamps angle while taking shots.

It's pretty easy. After doing it on my HGUC Sinanju it's pretty simple and straight forward. I tried it on my MG Red Frame and worked like a charm. Just be sure to keep it acrylic.

Beautiful kit. Personally, I think the Strike is one of the best Gundam designs ever and this new MG version is a perfect representation (along with its equally awesome RG version).

Reverse wash for the eyes is indeed really easy. I got it down to four steps: Paint entire eye section in acrylic color of choice for eyes, apply Future over it, apply enamel black over the entire section, wipe off enamel from raised eye area with Q-Tip + Lighter Fluid. Using metallic Gundam markers makes it a bit easier since there's less chance of the acrylic getting softened up by the Future.

thwalker13
June 29, 2013, 11:56 AM
I do it a bit differently. I apply a layer of chrome. A layer of acrylic clear in the color of choice, Future, then flat enamel black. After that I remove the black with lighter fluid, and done. An awesome looking metallic set of eyes.

Dlinker
June 29, 2013, 1:32 PM
Ah, I forgot about adding MM Chrome Silver as an undercoat. It was somewhat difficult when I did it on the Dynames so this time, it's plain Fluo acrylic. But I agree, adding a shiny metallic undercoat before the acrylic is a good idea, regardless of whether you use a clear or a normal color.

G-Xiphos: Though not a favorite show. The kits for Age where a favorite of mine! I still have more in my backlog to work on actually.
With this i wanted to get the big apparent seamlines and change the stance a bit. So i had to try some new stuff i have not done before myself to do so.

Dlinker
May 30, 2014, 10:35 AM
Holy crap, those mods are pretty darn similar to what I've done on my still-WIP G-Bouncer. Neck extension and then seeing if snipping that peg slot allows the shoulders to just snap in after welding together. Unfortunately for me, I had to scrap the shoulder snipping after realizing it made them too limp even with paint. I had to resort to painting the inside parts before hand and just masking it.

jaqio
May 30, 2014, 2:52 PM
Strange!
I had to paint the shoulder mods myself to. Because as you brought out, the things start to droop with the less secured fit. I think it's a certain zone to cut in order to avoid losing stability? As the guy I learned it from had the same problem with his Freedoms guns.

Dlinker
May 30, 2014, 3:13 PM
That could be it, though I don't know where it would be. Any part you take off will result in less grip for the entire slot. I suppose it can still be done as is, provided you give the slot a good dose of brushed-on clear coat to give more grip once the shoulder is inside. Hmmm, I think I'm going to try that out whenever I get a chance to work on mine again.

I purchased a pre-built kit from my buddy last month and decided to do my take on it. So I was thinking, What is something I rarely try on my kits? Came up with nothing but the same old ish!
So while cleaning it up I F-ed it up! So now i'm thinking Battle Damage! But I also tried some sculpting on the chest for the hell of it. I don't know when i'll paint it because of compressor problems.

But i'll be needing a lot of help painting the scaring and indentations as i only tried it twice before. Thankfully you guys are always eager to help people out!

But this is what the next gunpla I plan to finish will be, MG Dom with a bit of customization.

as always at this point it's still rough. But my main concern is going to be the weathering! Like should I start with a gray, and work up to like gunmetal or something for indentations? But like I said it will be a bit before I paint so i'll try to get it all figured out at the time.

You should look up military modelers and see how they do weathering on their kits. That's usually the best starting point since their weathering/battle damage is often amazing.

What kind of putty you're using to sculpt those custom areas? Been curious about it since your Guncannon.

Nice mods on the Dom man. I'm also curious on the putty that you're using. Looks like it dries really smooth, which is a good touch.

I like the skinnier chest. It makes it look much better. That's going to look really interesting when completed.

Good Idea! At the time I was using Milliput. But from now on I will be using Apoxie Sculpt.

Actually I dries very smoothly. But make sure you work within the next few hours to shape and sand it! As this becomes rock solid when cured. It's really good at simply making solid connections and gap filling to!
It's something I had for a good year in storage, but I got tired of trying to get styrene to work for me. So I started using this, and was surprised at how user friendly it was!

Thanks! For some reason i wanted the chest to have more of protruding shape, but not just bulk! As this stuff add a good deal of weight. So I went with this.

Hmm, I might have to try and find some of that stuff then.

It really is a good purchase to at least have on hand. And since I've notice that you are doing more customized work. I think you might really like this!
I forgot to mention that I bought the Yellow-Grey version. And though it may seem like a small amount for 8 bucks, I really goes a long way..

Aha, I knew that stuff looked familiar. I've worked with Apoxie Sculpt before and it really is a pleasure to use. That's what I made the bayonet mounts on my KA out of, haha. My only complaints with it is that sometimes it needs an adhesive to stick to a surface once it's dried and cured properly.

Yeah, I scuffed up the surface of the chest to get better adhesion. But when I was cutting to shape, the right side began sliding?
I ended up putting some good old super glue between the connection.

I've been getting the bug to make kits again (When i'm to broke to buy new stuff!) So I've been raiding the rack, and took my gouf custom apart and just started adding crap as I put it back together. as I really never have a plan nowadays when I build!

Most of the stuff I did is to subtle to really notice; like reshaping and antenna shaving along with making the head a bit narrow at the tip. But i'm trying new stuff like turning seams into panel lines and putty work more outside of aesthetics.

reshaped the 1 on the left. But it went kinda rough at the curved surfaces! so putty time! No Go! So I have to redo this part. (Self inflicted Bright Slap!)

I like the way this came out myself. I wanted just a bit more of a protruding chest. So Apoxie Sculpt time! I really enjoy using this so far! It seem tougher than Tamiya's to. as I did not lose big areas when sanding down to refine the shape!

Thanks. I am actually painting it up tonight. But my airbrush system is really fighting me even more now! But I think i'll have it finished by next Saturday regardless?

1st days painting! I opted not to do my regular shading on this one! As i am bored of doing the same kind of shading on every kit.. So i did some accents around the edges of about half of the parts.
After about 2 hours of getting my compressor running at an study rate, and my own inability to remember painting ratios!

I still don't know if i'll use decals though? But i'm actually looking forward to seeing the finished kit.

That pearl coat is looking mighty fine. I should buy a bottle of that and give it a whirl myself. The highlighting is looking interesting so far. Subtle on the blue parts and it surprises when you see it.

Yeah, this pearl powder is pretty versatile! As you can make clear pearl coats and control the pearlescent effect. And a little goes a long way to! I think I saw someone do the blue to white shading years ago? and I always wanted to try that. Now I want t experiment with Reds and lighter colors.

Thanks. I did not use all off the parts to my Tallgeese's thrusters, so I used that to add to the waist.

Thank You! I purchased the pearl powder about 2 years ago on Ebay for about 10 bucks. It was from an hobby guy in China, But I cant remember the seller name? Sorry!

Finished painting this. But unfortunately I had to rush it, cause my compressor is fluctuating like mad! I can be going 15psi, and suddenly I get an jolt of like 30+ air pressure? So there was some bad overspray that hit some parts.

I really can't dip into my limited funds to replace it now. So i'm just going to have to anticipate and adapt to it for the moment.
