Well guys. Tonight I have officially started my Custom Banshee project. Last night I spent a couple hours making a paint booth so I can paint indoors. And tonight I started my trial run to make sure that the paint will yield the results that I'm looking for.

On another note, I picked up some Tamiya Translucent Red paint and tested it out on the Psycho Frame's plate of the Destroy mode. And I must say that I love the look of it so far.

I guess I'll explain what I'm trying to accomplish with this project. I think that the Banshee is an awesome Gundam. And I want it to look more like it does in the OVA. So I'm taking it upon myself to make it that way as best I can. I'm starting with the Unicorn mode 1st and then tackling the Destroy mode after I get the Unicorn Mode complete. However, I will not be posting pictures of the final product until both modes are complete. And at the same time I will be debuting my HGUC Unicorn Gundams at the same time. I'll be posting some pics tomorrow night of my progress, and whatever progress I make. I will keep you guys updated as much as I can. And if any of you have any suggestions to anything you see. Please feel free to speak up. Cause this is my 1st custom project and i am really new at this. Thanks guys and I hope you all like my work.

Cya later.

how did you make your paint booth?, I have a rough idea of how to make one but I'm trying to get as much info as possible.

what is it that you are planning to do to this thing? like what is it that you are trying to change? i'm not super familiar with the 144th so i don't know if it has some major flaws that you are trying to fix. or is it just paint?

how did you make your paint booth?, I have a rough idea of how to make one but I'm trying to get as much info as possible.

I basically took two cardboard boxes and taped them together. I wasn't looking for anything fancy. Just something that I could make quick and cheap so that the spray paint didn't get all over everything. Works really well. I'll be posting pics of it tonight so check back.

I don't like how the Banshee comes in that dark blue plastic that Bandai likes to use instead of black. So I'm painting the entire kit black to make look more like the OVA. I'll be using gunmetal for the gray frame work and metallic gold for the chest, face, and unicorn/V-Fin. Then adding some extra details here and there to really make it stand out.

At the same time I'll be painting and detailing the weapons. I will make it known that I'll be painting all the parts. So I can easily make the OVA and the Novel versions.

Well, as promised. I have the 1st pics of my project. I'm still testing the paint to make sure that it'll give the affect that I want. So the I'm not fully underway with everything. But I'm getting there.

My newest kits.

is that gloss semi gloss or flat? its hard to tell in the pics

thwalker13
May 3, 2012, 7:17 AM
It's gloss paint with a semi gloss clear coat. It doesn't really give me the results I was looking for so I'm going to have to pick up a can of Flat clear coat and try that. The reason I used gloss paint as a base is cause I'm trying to create a difference between the armor, and the feet and backpack. Like the actual kit has.

WING ZERO
May 3, 2012, 10:14 AM
oh i see yeah that will look really interesting have gloss black and flat black. i love using flat white for my kits then using a glossy finish for brighter colors because then they really pop

thwalker13
May 3, 2012, 11:31 AM
I'm going to try to pick up some Flat Clear Coat today or tomorrow. And over the weekend I'm going to attempt to paint up the Psycho Frame of the Destroy mode while I'm waiting for the other stuff to dry.

WING ZERO
May 3, 2012, 4:09 PM

thwalker13
May 3, 2012, 4:33 PM
Sure am. I tested it out the other night and it looks really good. I'm going to attempt to thin it out a little bit what Joe suggested. And see if it looks any better.

Ok guys. Got an update for you. I picked up a can of Flat Top Coat, and a can of metallic gold. And well, I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Thought that I'd give you all a quick update before I leave to go see the Avengers.

Got all the parts that are to be painted Flat Black painted. Waiting for them to dry. And got most of the gold parts top coated. Just waiting for some touch up work to dry on the Horn. And while waiting I decided to see what the I could do with the Psycho parts for the Destroy mode. And I must say, I think I'm going to like it. In fact, I think I'll rename my version. My version of the Banshee will now be known as "Inferno Mode".

Stay tuned for more pics and updates guys.

Ok guys. Got some updates for you. Been painting the gunmetal parts here lately.

All these parts here require very fine added details. Like added gold accents and some bronze piping.

An up close shot of the ankle lock and it's golden thruster.

The knee joints with some bronze piping. I painted the same part on my Unicorn Gundam silver. I'm looking for the Unicorn and the Banshee to be somewhat mirror images of each other.

Going to do a lot more touch up details tomorrow on the parts that I painted today. So please stay tuned and tell me what you guys think.

thwalker13
May 8, 2012, 7:14 AM
Thanks man. These parts are taking a lot longer cause of the added detail that they require. After these and a few more are done, then it's mostly just painting the black armor pieces. Then the weapons. Which will take some time cause I really want them to pop.

thwalker13
May 8, 2012, 3:43 PM
Thanks Wiltonican. Yeah I wanted it to have a lot of nice accent parts while keeping the "Black Gundam" nickname alive. Awhile back I had gotten a bottle of bronze paint for my RG kits. And it kinda just struck me that was the color I needed to use.

You and me both. Though I'm afraid you all might have to wait to see it. I want to debut it and the "Inferno Mode" at the same time. But I havn't fully decided yet. I might debut the Unicorn Mode early. Since it'll be awhile before the other is done.

I got a lot done last night. I touched up a few pieces and clear coated a bunch of them. the A Place is almost completely empty, so I know I'm making progress. Anyways, I snapped a couple more pics for you all. Hope you enjoy.

nice work man its looking awesome. i love that bronze color. what did you use?

thwalker13
May 10, 2012, 4:44 PM
Testors Gloss Copper. I found it at Hobby Lobby and was going to use on my RG kits instead those annoying stickers. But it just so happened that I decided to use it on the Banshee kits. I thought it would some great detail while keeping the overall darkness to the kit.

thwalker13
May 11, 2012, 7:12 AM
Sticker? I actually have only used one sticker on this kit so far and that's the eye sticker. The bronze you see is paint that I bought to replace the joint stickers the RG kits use. I found that they do not want to stay in place on my RG Freedom, so I got that paint up there to use instead. I just ended up using it on this kit instead. lol

Unfortunately I have no new updates yet. I sold my car last night so I didn't get a chance to work on it. But I hope to get back into it today after work.

I feel like a fool now, and will proceed to crawl under my stone.

thwalker13
May 11, 2012, 8:38 AM
Lol it's ok. You can come out from underneath your stone. We all make mistakes. And I've done my fare share of over looking stuff on forums. ;) But I wanted to use the bronze to kinda add in some detail and break up all the black that will be on the kit. I plan on doing the same with the Destroy Mode. Except I'm going to do a few things that only can be done on the Destroy Mode.

thwalker13
May 12, 2012, 8:16 PM
Ok time for another update. I've gotten most of the fine details worked out. Really all that is left are the black armor parts. And not really a lot of those require touch up work. Between all that I really need to work on the bazooka. Which will probably take some time to do.

I picked a jar of "Gunship Grey" which I used to paint the hands. And I've also decided to use that same color on the bottom of the feet. Along with some touched up areas. Only got 2 pictures to show tonight but I'll have more in the coming days. I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I can't wait to this thing put together and start work on my "Inferno Mode"

Here is a shot of the thrusters after being touched up with some red.

Gunship Grey is a mainstay of my paint supply. A good, darker contrast to it is Engine Grey if you can find it.

thwalker13
May 13, 2012, 11:06 AM
I was really pleased with how it came out on the hands. I wanted them to be a different color than the rest of the inner frame so they would stand out. And I couldn't have asked for a better color.

Asterisk
May 13, 2012, 12:07 PM
I found out pretty early into my gunpla days that gunship grey was almost a perfect match for polycaps and bandai's usual grey detailing.

May 13, 2012, 3:43 PM
So um did you fix that paint dripping on the shield? And are you spraying inside like that?! :( You're killing your brain cells and lungs like that.

thwalker13
May 13, 2012, 8:03 PM
I have not yet fixed the shield. Though here soon it'll be put together most likely. This is my 1st ever custom paint job so I'm allowing certain mistakes. However those mistakes will not be made on the Destroy mode. I want it to be the better of the two.

And yes I am painting inside. The weather here is so random that it would be impossible to paint outside. So I made my cardboard paint booth to take care of that.

Ok guys. Big update coming here. I finished all the A-Plate parts and now I'm moving onto the D-Plate. And that means, Bazooka time. I did a ton of detailing last night along with some basecoat spraying. Going to be doing some more painting tonight so hopefully the Bazooka will be done in the next few days.

This also means that really all that is left are regular black pieces. Which means that this build will really start to take off and get done pretty fast. I know some of you are anxious so I decided to throw out a bone. When the Bazooka and Shield are completely done I'm going to put them together and post a few pics of them. Maybe that will tide you all over til the Banshee itself is complete. Until then, here are some pictures for you. Hope you like them.

Peace

thwalker13

Alright Gundam-Guys and Gundam-Gals. (I love that opening line that Patrick Grade uses) I'm bringing you another update. And this one, is a big one. I am 100% done with all the needed detail areas. Which means, that all I have left are black parts that need paint and top coat. Hopefully I'll have most of it done by next weekend. And then I can finally see this thing come together. I can't wait.

Any how, I promised you guys a sneak peak by showing off the Shield and Bazooka. I aim to please. So with out further delay I give you the custom Shield and Bazooka, of the Banshee.

Thanks. I'm still getting used to the whole painting thing. It doesn't look anywhere as good as your Deathscythe Hell. Some day I hope to get an airbrush and get much better at this.

Any who. I have a small update. I got both C-Plates empty. I have some parts on the rack waiting for clear coat. And 14 pieces waiting to be painted. After that, It's all done. Just gotta start putting it together. I'm so excited.

jayhat100

He was my first to be airbrushed. I'm still getting used to the process. Thinning paints, mixing paints, air pressure. It is worth it is worth it though. I plan to take a break before i start MG heavyarms to work on shadowing and highlighting. It gets pricing using spray cans and after you buy the airbrush and compressor it starts getting more affordable to paint these little money pits.

thwalker13
May 23, 2012, 12:20 AM
I've painted parts of kits before. But the Banshees are the 1st kits that I have ever attempted a full on custom paint job. So I kinda want to get used to painting in general before I spend a lot of money on an airbrush and compressor. But I did trade in one money pit for another. Got rid of my project car for a family car. So, I started up Gunpla again. And to be honest, I'm glad I made the trade.

D-Smith
May 23, 2012, 12:42 AM
i have to say in my opinion if you enjoy building models then a airbrush is well worth it. it can be frustrating at times and it can hog your attention but at the end of the day well worth it.

thwalker13
May 23, 2012, 7:11 AM
As long as I stick with the hobby and continue to paint more and more kits then I'll eventually pick one up. Which I plan to stick with the hobby. And I like painting, it just seems to be really time consuming. Well, not really. Takes me about 5 mins to do a paint session. Without detailing. I guess in the long run it takes awhile because of waiting for the paint to dry.

gdx9902
May 23, 2012, 7:57 AM
I love your custom colors for this Banshee. For me I'm a sucker when it comes to contrasting colors, and when certain parts/details pop out.

When you get an airbrush, you also might want to invest in making a proper spraybooth for yourself, and your family, as to ensure the fumes.
They can be made very cheaply with parts from a Hardware store.

Also, I would like to add, that once you start with the airbrush, something about it, makes it hard to turn back from. And there are quite a few second hand airbrushes you may want to try to get for cheaper.

thwalker13
May 23, 2012, 10:21 AM
Thanks gdx. I wanted to do something different. I hadn't really seen a lot of people paint up the Bazooka since the OVA doesn't use it. But I wanted to some how incorporate it to match the Banshee itself.

I have done some research on airbrushes. I found some that were rather affordable. But it's the compressor that kills me. The really quiet ones, which is what I would need cause the loud ones would wake my kids up. Are really expensive. And I just do not have the extra cash laying around to buy one. My wife and I are trying to redo our house. And with me being the only one with a job, things are tuff. Barely have enough money to support Gunpla. lol

jayhat100
May 23, 2012, 12:44 PM
I found a 40% off coupon online for micheal's it really made the airbrush super affordable the compressor is a different story l got my new one at homedepot for around $80.00 but I don't have small kids so noise was not a factor but I feel your pain on the only paycheck in the house.

Will do man.

Update: So the other day I said that I was completely done with adding small touch up paint to areas of detail. Well, it would seem that I kinda lied. The other day while I was spraying some black I thought that it would look good to add some copper to the upper thighs. So I went ahead and did it. I do not foresee this hampering my schedule in any way. Right now I think I can have everything painted and ready to go for construction either Saturday or Sunday. So stay tuned for updates and a new thread depicting the completed Banshee (Unicorn Mode).

Anyways. Tonight, I clear coated the last of the parts. So tomorrow night will mark the beginning of construction. I can't wait.

Ok guys. I'm posting this from my iPhone because I'm sitting at my kitchen table about to start putting together my custom painted Banshee (Unicorn Mode). Here we go. Wish me luck.

It's done. And I have uploaded a ton of photos. The link is below for those that want to check it out. But, this thread is not dead. For I still have my custom HGUC Inferno Mode Banshee to start on. So check back for updates on that. But for now, here is the link to my Unicorn Mode Banshee Gundam.

Ok guys. Here is a new update for the Inferno Mode. I've gotten all the gold parts sanded and up on the rack ready to paint. I'm not going to be doing any painting tonight due to a headache. But I plan on getting the gold parts and some joint parts painted up tomorrow. I already have the Psycho Frame ready to go. However you all will not see that, until the unveiling. Hehe, sorry guys. But that is what will make this kit shine.

Thanks. I'm going to be putting a bit more effort in on this one. I didn't sand off the nub marks on the Unicorn Mode. But this time around I plan to do some sanding before I paint.

Alrighty, got some small updates for ya. Went to Hobby Lobby today. Got me some gloss black paint, and some flat clear coat. And painted up all the gold parts and started on some of the joint parts.

Here's the face.

And tell me this isn't the coolest V-Fin in all of Gundam.

I'll grant you it's one of the coolest. I've been following, just not a banshee fan so have really had much to say. I could just say looks really good, but I find that lacking.

Though it does all look really good.

Ok, I have another update. Got a lot of the joints painted up, detailed, and clear coated last night. Trying to burn through the A-Plate as fast as I can cause it has most of the parts that I need to put the most work into. And for some reason, I don't know why. I just felt like I wanted to see the head all put together. So I've painted the base coat on all the parts for the head unit. That should be finished in the next couple of days. Well, I'll let you all see a few pics and hopefully I'll have more here soon.

Well the last couple of days have really been a disaster. My plans for the face plate fell through horribly. And for some reason my flat clear coat has turned half the helmet glossy.

June 2, 2012, 12:11 AM
Man sorry to here that.
Belive me i understand how it is to plan out something and see it all come together then suddenly that one thing comes along and BAM!
But, from what i've seen in your work i know you'll still pull off something awesome.

thwalker13
June 2, 2012, 11:11 AM
My plans for the face plat was to paint the mouth vents gold. But since they are so small I can't use the same technique I used on my Epyon. I put some gold paint on it and took a q-tip dipped in thinner and lightly brushed the access off. But it ended up taking all the gold off along with most of the clear coat. So I just stripped the paint off and started over. Along with half the helmet.

Admittedly, I had not followed this from the beginning and now I wish I had been there to be a cheerleader like the rest of these guys! I say the picture of the Unicorn mode and, yeah, sure there are mistakes and you recognize them, but you know what else I see? I see how much love and devotion you have put into this project so far! I see you stepping out of your comfort level and trying new things. This is just awesome! I am going to try and follow this project a lot closer now!

Let's discuss a couple things. You mentioned your flat coat came out glossy. Next time you use it give a really good shake for 2 whole minutes, then test it on something. I'm thinking the "flat" settled. Basically, the only difference between gloss, semi-gloss, satin, and flat/matte top coats is the amount of white pigment in them. They all use the same base which is a glossy clear paint. To brake up the shine they add varying level of very fine white pigment (which is why if you spray too much flat you'll get a frosty look). So yeah, give it a good shake, if that doesn't work take it back to the store because you got a defective/mislabeled can.

For the gold on the face plate, this sounds too cool for it not to get done, so I'm trying to think of how you could do this. My first thought was to thin out some gold paint, like water thin and dip a fine brush into that and just dab at a corner of the lines letting capillary action suck the gold flakes suspended in thinner into the panel lines. OR you could paint the lines as best you can, then with a steady hand paint black around and next to the lines trying to stay out of them as best you can.

Good luck, thwalker13!

thwalker13
June 2, 2012, 3:30 PM
I was considering the latter of those options. The only issue I see with that is the small divided area between the panel lines. Either that, or laying down a coat of gold over the the panel lines. Then painting black over it and the entire face plate at the same time. But I did actually consider that I didn't shake the can well enough. So I have stripped down parts. And letting them air dry. And later tonight I'll attempt again. I'm rather disheartened, but I'm pushing on. I want to see this kit done. And I know that you all are wanting to see it as well.

thwalker13
June 2, 2012, 6:33 PM
Well I don't have any pictures to show of my progress on the Banshee. But I thought I'd post some random pics of what I was working on while my Banshee kits were being shipped. When I ordered my Unicorn kits they were sold out of the Destroy mode. So I opted to spend the extra 5 bucks and get a cool display base with the Destroy mode. And with a little bit of paint, and a lining marker. This is what I got.

jayhat100
June 2, 2012, 11:14 PM
Don't let the set backs get you down. The kits are looking amazing. Even if there not perfect you will never just snap a kit together again you will always want to paint them and they slowly become better and better. I hope to someday be good enough to enter the contest that come up.

I do need to attempt to paint the vulcans. But I feel that it needs, something. I do not know what. I'll try to post up some pics later. Maybe one of you guys can think of what it needs.

Edit: In one of these you can see the imperfections in the face plate that I mentioned. But after all that I had to go through. I think I'll just be fine with how it turned out.

After inspecting the head a little better the vulcans are actually covered up by the lower part of the V-Fin. So not only are they useless. But completely hidden.

Great work.

Well progress has pretty much grinded to a halt. I have a ton of parts on the rack all needing clear coat. And I have ran out of semi-gloss top coat. Which means until I get some, I can't continue. Hopefully my local hobby shop will have some tomorrow. Along with the Graphite Metallic that I've been using. Cause I'm about out of it as well.

thwalker13
June 5, 2012, 10:51 PM
Ok guys, good news. I got some more clear coat and graphite metallic from my local hobby store. So I'm back in business. I got everything on the rack clear coated and 2 new parts painted. Tomorrow I'll get a bunch more parts on there. And like before. I'll give you all a sneak peak via the Beam Magnum. So stay tuned and keep watch.

Ok guys. I'm back with an update for the few, or many, that following this. I have completely emptied the A-Plate and almost emptied the D-Plate. I have also started work on the Beam Magnum. Which will be the teaser for this kit. So stay tuned for that and more updates cause I'm almost completely done with all the parts that need special attention. Meaning that it won't take me long to finish this bad up. In the mean time, here are a few more pics.

Ok back with another update. I got a ton of detailing done. However some of the parts had bubbles in them. So they needed to be stripped and re-painted. I plan on doing that later tonight along with a lot of top coating. 90% of the Beam Magnum is done. I just need to finish up the barrel and I can put it all together. Hopefully by the end of the weekend I'll have that all finished for you guys.

Squee
June 9, 2012, 11:49 PM
You're spraying with spray cans, yes? You need to do quick light passes with the paint. If you don't get the whole part painted, just stop. Let the paint dry for a few minutes and do a few more quick passes. This will help avoid bubbling and paint build up.

thwalker13
June 10, 2012, 12:49 PM
I know. I think this is only the 2nd time it's happened. Pretty sure it was because I was in a hurry because my wife was on her way home and I wanted to get all the painting done before she got home. I tried not hurrying but I probably did anyways. However, I have gotten a lot done. I just need to clear coat some parts and detail up the barrel and the Magnum is done.

thwalker13
June 11, 2012, 7:29 AM
Alrighty guys. Last night I top coated the last of the parts for the Beam Magnum. So later on tonight I'll put it all together and post up some pics of it so you guys can have a sneak peak. I also completely finished off the D-Plate and have almost finished another plate as well. I have also started work on the Armored-Arms. So those I'm sure will be interesting. I'm thinking of doing the shield next cause I'm wanting to do something with it. Just not sure what yet. But here are 2 random pics for you. And tonight, I'll have the Beam Magnum for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy.

Well I look forward to seeing it. I really can't wait to get started on my new MG 00 Raiser. But I have to wait til my decals get here. (hopefully they will) Then I have to order some Walther's Solvaset, and 4 more LED units from GS&M when I order my RG Mk. II Titans Version.

Wow, going all out for the 00 Raiser i see. This is going to be nice.

thwalker13
June 13, 2012, 10:47 PM
I do not plan on painting it. But I do plan on doing some things that I have never done before. Like water slide decals and using that Solvaset stuff. I kinda want to take a break from painting kits for a little while. Doing 2 in a row has kinda burnt me out. But, I only have like 3 more parts that require special attention with the Banshee. So after that, it's all just paint, and top coat. So it's going to go by pretty fast.

jaqio
June 14, 2012, 12:58 AM
Totally undersand the being burned out on painting thats how i feel at the moment also. Still a well thought out and put together model is good painted or not.
So i'm looking foward to see your 00 master grade.

thwalker13
June 14, 2012, 7:05 AM
I do however plan on painting the Celestial Being Display Base that I ordered with the kit. So that might be a some fun.

Update: I finished off the D-Plate last night. So all that's left are the C-Plates, and the B-Plate I think. Only parts on those that require some attention are the upper thighs and the shield (which I'm working on now). So once all those are done, as long as I have no complications. This build will go pretty quick from here on out.

thwalker13
June 14, 2012, 9:20 PM
Alrighty. I got the Armored Arms done. And a lot more parts have been painted. The only hand painting I have left to do, are the joints on the upper thighs. After that, all the hand painting is done. And it's all straight painting. Working on the parts for the shield right now. Planning something a bit special for one of the pieces. Hopefully it works out well. Alright guys, stay tuned for more updates.

Alrighty. I'm back with a major update. All the fine tuning and touch up work is 100% done. From here on out, it's straight painting and top coating. No extra work needed. I've got 6 parts left on the B-Plate. And after that, it's down to the C-Plate twins. So hopefully, it shouldn't take me to long to get it all done. But in the mean time. Lol I know. But there really isn't anything exciting to take pictures of. I mean, I COULD take pictures of the completed backpack and shield. But that would spoil the surprise. lol

I've also been trying to get a display stand ordered with my next order of kits. But GS&M is sold out of the one that I want. Then I happened to notice that my MG Strike Freedom came with an extra base that I'm not using. So, WIN! I'm thinking a cool aerial battle is in store between the Banshee and the Unicorn here soon.

i know there are people that may disagree but setters are not super necessary as much as softers. i recently saw someones perfect grade that was quite spectacular get F'd up because he used a setter that didn't agree with his top coat and yeah... i would probably not use it unless you think your decals are gonna fall off which i have never really seen happen

D-Smith, that's very good advise, but for whatever reason, this company has labeled it as a setter when I have used it and it acts like a softer and a setter. It melts the decals to conform to the plastic. It's great stuff! Now, I've only ever used it on bare plastic though, so thwalker13 should probably still test it on a top coat if you're going to use it over a topcoat.

I had planned on applying it to the bare plastic. Then a glossy top coat over it. I don't plan on painting my 00 Raiser so I don't see the need to lay down a top coat, apply decals, then top coat again. Just seems like a little extra work that really won't make to much of a difference in the end.

Edit: BTW, you all can call me Thomas if you want. Or Walker. It's up to you.

dude i am actually expecting a 00 raiser and it would be super fun to do a build off. like a friendlt build off where you work together on the same kit to bounce ideas off each other. it would be a little while though because i am actually about to do a build off with a member on the mechalounge who goes by substance. and we are doing PG RX-78 Vs. PG RX-178 and we each came up with three rules of things that we have to do and its gonna be loads of fun. so if you were interested it would be fun

AW! That sounds like it would be really fun! I also have a 00 Raiser not yet built, but 1)I'm pretty dedicated to building like 20 Gundam Wing kits right now and 2)I would feel like I'm butting in on a neat thing between two members and that would be rude. BUT YOU GUYS WOULD HAVE SO MUCH FUN!

I still have my RG Aile Strike, and I plan on building a RG Mk. II Titans before starting on my 00 Raiser. So it'll be awhile for me as well.
