Are your folks or friends harassing you about your hobby? Asking why you're "playing with toys" even at your age? Well, you can tell 'em you're exercising your brain, and science has undeniable(hopefully) proof that building model kits, especially Gunpla, stimulates the mind, makes you smarter, promotes world peace and cures cancer!*

Here's an except from a news article:

Kikunori Shinohara, a professor in the Neuroscience department of Suwa Tokyo Science University, announced that building Gundam models (or Gunpla which is short for "Gundam plastic model") was healthy for the human brain. The act of putting the model together promotes blood circulation in the brain, said Shinohara-san, which lets it "concentrate better, react better and remember better."

Now, I'm not sure about my brain's thought processes improving, since it's been years since I've taken a seriously scored IQ test, but I do believe in keeping one's brain active. Alzheimers runs in my family, and one of my greatest fears is succumbing to it in old age. It's a fact that keeping one's mind active keeps it at bay, so I guess I'll be building plamo even on my deathbed!

While I can't account for my brain activity, I can attest to Gunpla teaching me the merits of patience & diligence. I used to be able to snap together an average MG in about half a day, but now a full, clean assembly with simple touch-up painting/topcoating takes me more or less a week. And the results speak for themselves when I compare my current work to kits I built 15 years ago.

This has win written all over it. And I agree with your closing statement. I've compared my current work to my work when I was a little kid. And like you said, the results speak for itself.

That makes two of us thwalker13,

Modelling has taught me patience and diligence and I have noticed that when I make time to do models, I become more patient with the ppl around me (esp in the office).

I used to be all into cars. (still kinda am) But after getting married and having a family I really can't work and mod cars like I used to. So Gunpla has kinda taken that place. I feel like it's my way of expressing myself in an artistic way. How I paint and detail the kits. When people come over and see them and are like, "did you build these?" I can proudly say "yes I did."

Everyone needs a creative outlet. EVERYONE!

If they don't, they'd just beat wives and kick babies.
