View Full Version : GFGM Group Build

Ok, so here it is, our first big, forum-wide GROUP BUILD!

Let's all see what we can do with a GM-style model kit. Take any GM kit and customize it in some way. It can be anything from panel lining it to a repaint to a full-on scratch built custom. Any MS that is a grunty GM type from the Universal Century. This includes: GMs (of course), Jegans, Jestas, Nemos, etc. It can be from any model line: HGUC, MG, SD, whatever. This GM idea is something we've kicked around before and hopefully we can get everyone involved in something to test/show off our skills as Gunpla enthusiasts.

Rules:

1) Deadline is May 31, 2012. I know it seems like a long way off, but this should let everyone have a chance to find and purchase a kit, come up with an idea, wait for nice weather, or heal from injuries (that's you, GNZ!).

2)Please use a new kit or one that you may have built but have not painted, not a custom that you've had lying around somewhere, we want everyone to share in the fun!

3)If you are interested in participating, respond in this thread letting us know you're in.

4)Must be a Universal Century kit; no Leos, Adeles, Genoaces, Flags, etc. (don't worry, we'll do Alt. Centuries later!)

5)This thread is where you can post how your progress is coming along.

6)Don't worry about "lack of skill" or whatever; no one is going to hate on you just because you have little experience with this sort of thing. In fact, one of the reasons for doing this is so we can all learn and help each other out.

7)*insert generic "Have fun!" rule here*

@Asterisk: Sure, I guess I'll amend the rules to included kits that may be snapped together, but previously unpainted.

@RX-78-2: Sounds good, I hope you can! Let us know if/when you know for sure!

I, of course, will be doing something, but I have to decide on the kit. Probably will be the MG GM Type C.

Too bad there's no HGUC GM Cannon 1, I'd totally do one of those.

Is ths only limited to GMs. If not, I have an idea to make a custom Zaku I sniper type with the commanders fin painted white and put behind where the right ear would be on a MS. It is a Zaku I "White Feather" Custom.

Kenico
February 11, 2012, 4:29 PM
can a Jegan (or its decendants. seeing the Jegan and its decendants are by extention the GM's Decendants) be used in this endeavor? if YES than count my hide in! ive got a cool custom job in the works and with a working camera (Finally!) i can post that badboy lol.

NOTE: its not made yet, but it will be b4 the contest is up lol

February 11, 2012, 10:28 PM
ReZel? would that be a GM variant? I guess any Feddie unit that is not a Gundam, Guncannon, Guntank, or Ball would be a GM variation, right?

Kenico
February 12, 2012, 3:52 AM
since the ReZel was part of the ReZeg family (which by extension was what happend when a GM and Zeta had a baby lol) than yeah its part of the GM Family. basically all FEDDIE ms are from the GM family, and all Gundams AND GMs families are ancestors to the RX-78-2 Gundam.

squeam
February 12, 2012, 8:01 AM
I actually disagree. The ReZEL is a 3-way love child between the Methuss, Zeta, and ReGZ; none of which have GM lineage in them. Methuss was the first of its kind, as was Zeta. The ReGZ was a mass-produced Zeta Gundam-it may look like it has some GM in it, but AE didn't use any GM "DNA" to make it.

Unless you can convince me otherwise, like say making the ReZEL into a GM, I'm going to have to say "No" to the ReZEL. Now, I'm not trying to be an overlord or anything here. If the Group Build participants vote to allow it, I'm fine with that. I also hate getting so technical, but there are a LOT of kits to choose from that are unquestionably related to GMs. Plus, I want to be able to keep doing Group Builds in the future and, if we allow too much stretching of eligibile kits, it won't really be a "group build" because we'll all just be building whatever kit we feel like and trying to sandwich it into the catergory.

Kenico
February 12, 2012, 8:09 AM
Actually i commend that you cleared that up. and yes technically the ReZel is NOT of the GM Lineage (i apologise for my previous statement stating they were i was mistaken) so if any want a ReZel sorry for getting your hopes up.

I can agree to that logic, squeam. Of the 130+ backlog of unbuilt kits I have, though, the MG ReZel is the only decent mass produced Feddie unit I have... Well, I do have 5 of the original 1/144 GM kits from the 80's... Mayhaps I'll see if I can't make one of them look better.

I'm in!

@Kenyon: No worries. Nice to see you are in!

@Joe: Wow! I thought MY backlog was out of control...wait, not one GM kit? Well, I can see that; I don't have many Zaku-ish kits in my collection, so to each his own, I guess. Old NG 1/144? That's a challenge for sure; glad to have you aboard!

@GNZ: Bless you ever-lovin heart. You have way too much idle time in your current gimped state.

Random question here and I'm sorry if it's been answered, but does scale matter? I've got an idea but it's a 1/100 scale and most I'm seeing here are 1/144

http://robot4less.com/gm-17-1144?filter_name=GM&filter_category_id=67

GSaM doesn't sell the original line of kits and R4L usually doesn't carry them either. They just happen to have a few in stock right now. I had ordered 6 of these long ago when I was going to make a full on stop motion movie back in high school. I needed some GMs for a big battle scene and some explosions and didn't want spend a ton on HGUC kits. So, I got some cheap 300 yen GMs. I built one right away so my brother and I could figure out how to rig it to blow (bro was a bit of a pyro enthusiast). Well, movie plans never panned out, big dreams, small wallet, etc.

So I have 5 GM's left. I'll use them for something eventually. The woman wants to use them as target practice for our airsoft shooting range which would be okay as they were intended for destructive purposes. But now one of them has been saved thanks to this group build!

I guess I'll get the ball rolling on the WIP. I've got an old Kyrios model that's been lying around for a while with missing parts. Seeing as how I had a GM to go along with the orange color scheme, I decided that the first step would be to take the weapons from Kyrios and give them to the GM. The end result doesn't look to bad if you ask me! I've got some big plans for this model and hopefully the outcome will look good but here's what he looks like for now:

i used A Tamiya Black to repaint the gaudy green into the black (duh) and i repainted the clear pink into a clear blue for the beam sabers. the black and silver alows the olive drab to pop out than it orignally did so im happy, it also allowed the clear blue visor to pop out as well. heres some more. again sorry for the bad resolution.

as for weapons, the only thing i did is swap out the gaudy beam rifle for the Gundam MKII's Rifle. i was gonna use the MKII's Shoulders but i discovered (seeing it was an extremely old kit) it wasnt comparable to the modern HGs. any way here are the last Four i did. questions, comments, concernes, and overall "Whattya think?"

I like the black and green color scheme and the way the green pops out on the panel lines (like on the skirt armor) is really cool. The blue beam is something you don't see everyday. Personally, I'd like to see a bit of a darker color on the Stark's armor bits, but that's just me.

Overall, a nice custom. And, man, did you focus on this project, or what?! I still don't even have the parts off the runners of my kit, let alone decided on a piant scheme.

thank you very much, i have been working on this for a while. the paintjob that is. as for the kit it took me a while to decide which kit to use. but once i sat on one i went for the gold. personally i liked the way the armor over the black did a job of contrastint to the black. at least it doesnt get overwelmed like it (and the other colors) did in the original coloring. as for everything else id say that the build was an overall success. so much so im in the works for two new HG custom jobs.

I'm not sure if I'll be doing a custom scheme or not for my GM. Started today, this should be a relatively quick assembly. There are only two small runners for this GM kit and the construction of the original 1/144 kits is so rudimentary. However, after assembling the kit there is sanding, filling in gaps, re-sanding, re-filling, re-sanding, re-building sanded down areas that shouldn't have been sanded down, re-scribing lines, and then painting.

I may just do the original colors on this kit. Sort of an "Ode to Jim" :-P

I know how you feel. The last kit I got was my whole Dopp/Gaza-C/PGSI set. Which was a while ago.

Also, Squeam, I do want to see how that would turn out. Yellow and black is always a sexy combination. So i'd like to see what you would do with it.

I have the legs, arms, hands, and the head all glued together and most of it all sanded. I would have a hard time sanding those parts if I had built the torso already, as everything is sandwiched between the front and back. I should have the sanding done on those parts sometime this week. This GM is a side project while I try and finish up the rest of HG Remastered Blitz and then Aegis.

If I were to ever pilot a GM, I think it would have to be the one Zechs36 did. That thing is fantastic!

Haha, thanks! It's funny how similar the two models were. Most of the parts are completely interchangeable with no mods so it was very easy to build.

If I remember correctly, the MG GM Custom is just a remolded Alex, so that's even more similar.

I wanted to try out some fading effects on this one in areas plus i wanted to try applying the decal scheme my own way. Also my inspiration for the color for the mobile suit itself is rgm-3.

Well, with all the craziness of Spring, there was no way I was going to get a kit done... However, I had taken the lineart in to work to poke at, and made a few copies for the coworkers to also poke at on a slow day. This is what I ended up with, just being silly, and I suppose it's my final entry now.

So did everyone get their kits finished that tried for it? I know Skittles had some issues and contributed with some nice art work instead of a model. Squeam? I don't recall seeing your GM.

*smiles sheepsihly* So, yeah...I did get my GM Type C finished...after the end date. Way to be, huh? It did not turn out that great, due to the hazards of combining rattle can and airbrush, the incredible heat, dirty paint, airbrush inexperience...it just was a struggle. I'll get some pics up when I can, so we can all learn...

Squeam, you seem to have been away for a bit. Good to know you got you GM done. It's your group build, so you're allowed to fudge the rules a little ;-).

Well, here it is. The yellowy-orange and other orange are Krylon rattle cans that apparently had sat in too cold of weather over the winter. The steel, green, clear orange (visor), and gunmetal blue are all Vallejo Model Color paints I sprayed on with an airbrush. I thinned the gunmetal too much and the steel not enough. The only color I'm really happy with is the green; although my wife tells me it looks out-of-pla
ce.

SQUEAM ohmigod dat shield. I dunno why, but I have a thing for GM shields. Grey always, ALWAYS looks better as a base color on GMs in my opinion.
