Finished up my GM project at long last. Came out pretty good what with the trouble I had with the purple spray paint I had intended to use. Wound up doing the purple by hand, as well as some touch up on the blue. All in all, pretty successful venture, considering this was my first real painting attempt using various techniques I've just learned over the last couple of months.

Next up on the agenda...better photography area.

A different color scheme... I have very problems with metallic color, mines always blur in some points of the kit....

:)

This was really my first time experimenting with them. Seemed to be okay for the most part, though certain spots seem a bit thin.

Looking good! I like how the green of the visor sheens.

For the metallics how did you get it to lay down so smooth? No matter how I try to remove dust from the unpainted plastic, some always shows up underneath the paint and it irritates me. Lol Funnily enough, this never happens with regular non metallic paint for me.

UrbanSniper
June 10, 2016, 11:56 AM
All I did for that was spray down a couple layers using a can of Testors Arctic Blue Metallic, then touch it up with some of their Model Master acrylic in the same color. Can't really say I did anything else besides that and a layer of Tamiya primer underneath. I might have just gotten lucky not to have any dust stick to it, lol.

For the purple, I had a layer of Testors Silver Metallic underneath, then ran into problems with their transparent Grape color coming out chunky on the shoulders and shield (assuming a bad batch, as it came out fine initially when I tested it). After that, I sanded them down and repainted them and the rest by hand using a non-metallic grape color thinned down.

Night Fever, perhaps? Or the always classic Stayin' Alive?

Well, Stayin' Alive wouldn't be adequate due to the quick death factor unfortunately.

Well, I think I'm pretty much done with the Bawoo. Decided to keep the basic color scheme because that orange is just so sexy, but decided to do some painting on some accessories. I may go back and touch up a few spots after seeing these pics, but for all intents and purposes, this one is done. Think I'll be moving on to try another large scale paint job on the next project, unless I decide to build a quick Serpent from Endless Waltz before then.

Though I had intended to start building my GM Custom tonight, I decided instead to build and make use of my "cheap as shit" photo booth, consisting of a cardboard box that once contained a Gunpla delivery, some tracing paper, and a bigger sheet of plain white sketch paper. Seems to have worked pretty well considering I've only got my work light and the room lights for illumination right now.

First some test shots of my GM:

It's great to see the Bawoo hold its beam saber with an underhand grip. Never even thought of trying that since I'm more into posing my kits by brandishing guns and other ranged weapons. That's an awesome idea. Might try it sometime.

Figured I'd try something a bit different, and it turned out well, so I'd say go for it! Think the menace factor on the Bawoo with beam saber and rifle was highest on that second picture ;)

think 1/100 HG. they do it for stuff that would not make them enough money as a MG or stuff that would be to expensive. like the Kyshatriya is going to be getting a re/100. although id gladly pay a few hundred for a MG of it. and that is about what a MG of it would cost its a huge mobile suit with a lot of moving parts.

Been a while since I've put anything up here, but that's how summer is sometimes, I suppose, lol. Still trying to get the Physalis build completed, just have to find a chance to do some priming and painting on the bazooka and backpack, and the thruster bells.

On the other hand, I finished up a Guncannon Revive straight build yesterday, and I have to say, I enjoy this kit a lot. Very pose-able and very well engineered. Same quality as the RX-78-2 I built up a while ago (which I never got to take any cool photos of). So, here are some finished work pics of my Guncannon (with a Hi-Mock rifle on a couple of them, cause why not?) and the Gundam, both straight build with panel-lining.

Been a while since I've posted here, but it's also been a while since I've finished off a build. This one was just a straight build of the Dynames; finished up the panel lines a little while ago. I don't know what it was about this kit, but it started off fine, and after the torso and head, it just seemed to get tedious. I didn't really care for it at that point, but once it was all completed, I actually found myself liking it quite a bit, even with some very annoying nub marks that I couldn't quite get rid of.

Still, even with such a simple pose, it looks pretty badass.

Maybe next time I do some pictures in the photo box, I'll have a proper place to sit it with proper lighting.

Nice. I ended out cancelling my Dynames order after waiting on backorder for about three weeks. Sort of regret it now.

I'd go for it if you ever catch it in stock. Only thing to be aware of is that it doesn't come with any beam saber effects or its pistols, sadly, but still, not a bad buy overall.

Just a quickie build and line job on this little no grade 1/144 Heavyarms I got in the other day. After building so many modern HGs, this one really brought back memories of the old days, lol. Probably not gonna be doing anything else with this one. Doesn't look too bad really, but it's definitely got issues with joints, especially the gun arm and head being loose. Plus the pose-ability is pretty minimal.

Been a while since I've done a full paint job on a kit, but here's what I've been working on the last couple weeks. Had the kit itself built and ready to paint since last summer, but just got around to working on it now because I wanted to get it done and off my plate. And I needed practice.

So, here we have the 1/144 Serpent, hand-painted and finished. This was a very good practice build that turned out rather nice looking overall. I got the paint as good as I could without becoming obsessed with getting it perfect, and there are some definite brush marks and mistakes, plus the clear/dull coats are a bit thick in spots (first time I've made use of them in forever), and panel lines aren't the best cause it was my first time using a wash, but hey, practice makes gooder, right? The weapons actually turned out nicer than I initially thought they would once the dull coat was on them, though mainly those were an excuse to try some new Tamiya paint. Definitely need some retarder for that stuff when painting by hand...

Oh, the things I learned on this project...like the fact that hand painting Tamiya acrylics, especially in colors like orange and red, SUCKS. The Vallejo paints work a lot better for hand painting; I just didn't have local access to a wide range of colors in that brand. Why Hobby Lobby has like two dozen colors with at least a quarter of them variations of flesh tones I'll never know... Anyway, here we have what I've been working on since February. The paint is something of a nightmare, but it kinda looks like fire...if you use your imagination, lol.

I'm really proud of the big weapon, though. The once color that's not disappointed me from Tamiya has been their gunmetal color. A couple of coats of that makes guns look good. The backpack mod looks pretty good, though the bands on the tanks gave me a bit of a headache, what with me never really having had to bend plastic pieces and actually trying to get them to stay in place. Tried several new things here, so for that, I'm very pleased. Overall, I'm happy with this one, and I'm likely going to revisit the idea somewhere down the line once I get better.

So, without further ado...

Zaku Firebat Mk. I

Backstory:
The Laredo Massacre and the Dodgers Amendment

As seen on the plaques at preserved battle display at the Laredo Convention Center:

“During the First Annual Laredo Open Tournament, which used Version 1 of the Battle System operating system, a serious flaw in the system was discovered in a most dramatic way. Mr. Dodgers, a native of Texas who had promised his young daughter that he would win the tournament no matter what, either stumbled into the system flaw by accident or had acquired some inside knowledge of the system’s workings. Regardless of how this knowledge was gained, it was used to devastating effect during the Grand Melee qualifier.

The Zaku Firebat, as it was named, came equipped with a standard MMP-80/90mm machine gun and several integrated missile pods, those on the shoulder shield and shoulders armed with HEAT warheads, and those on the hips armed with armor-piercing burst rounds designed to explode once they penetrate an enemy’s outer armor to cause massive internal damage. The gunpla itself featured several metal parts, including enhanced armor plating and reinforced internal frame parts, making it rather heavy, even without its unique weapons. The addition of a GN particle storage tank mounted to the back skirt between the legs meant it could also create a limited use GN Shield, though this feature was never used.

The most interesting features of the Zaku Firebat’s armaments were its two flamethrower weapons. The smaller, arm-mounted flame unit, protected by a reinforced shield, was fed by two aluminum tanks mounted onto the unit’s backpack, and produced a highly compacted ball of fire that could project out to medium-long range. The much heavier handheld giant flamethrower was fed by a trio of aluminum fuel tanks mounted directly to the weapon, and could cover a very wide area with high-intensity flames, melting plastic in moments. There is still uncertainty as to exactly what was used to fuel these units, but it is thought to have been a binary agent that ignited upon contact with air.

As Mr. Dodgers reportedly said, using such weapons was simply “the best way to win the battle...and it wasn’t in the rules that I couldn’t do it. Gunpla is freedom, right?”

As seen on the recording playing on the screen to your right, the battle was short and terrifying. Though slow and not very maneuverable, the heavy armor of the Zaku Firebat protected it from most attacks, very few even marring the paint (which had been mixed with a flame and heat retardant agent), and once it's flamethrowers began spewing their chemicals, gunpla across the small battlefield began melting and burning. The first version of the Battle System OS could not detect the use of real flammable chemicals, only reading the simulated fire that it created for the battle. Thankfully it only took a couple of minutes for the system to be shut down and safety personnel to extinguish the flames.

What remained lies before you, the event now known as the “Laredo Massacre.” Nearly thirty gunpla lie in scorched and melted piles upon the scorched (but otherwise unharmed) Battle System pods, the last victim a lone GM Command Space type that was frozen in place as it tried to crawl away, its legs melted and trailing behind as the Zaku Firebat looms over it.

It was this event that led to the “Dodgers Amendment” to the official Gunpla Battle rules and regulations, which prohibits the use of flammable chemicals used as weapons and ammunition, as well as the use of actual functioning weapons, however small they may be. The Battle System OS has since been updated to prevent such an event from occurring again, and can also detect weapons and systems like those used on the Zaku Firebat.”

Been a while since I finished up a quick little build and did some panel lines on it. Got some issues with this kit (primarily some seam lines that seem rather annoying and lack of multiple hands, secondarily some poor fit on the yellow chest vent pieces and the yellow parts on the wings, but those were fixed with some cement), but it looks amazing when its posed in flight. Gonna look good on the shelf.

They're only bad on the shoulder armor thrusters and under the forearms; otherwise they're pretty well hidden.

Now this build has been an experience; overall good, but with it's share of annoyances. The biggest learning experience with this kit was definitely the airbrushing; this is my first airbrushed kit, aside from the primer and top coat layers. I can see why it's an art...so many screw ups, but so much learned! And so much more yet to learn. The biggest issue, I think, is that the blue came out a bit too dark, so you can't really see all the details I had added, but that's just how things worked out.

It ain't perfect, but there's no way I could get it there with my current level of experience. Overall, though, I'm happy with what finally came out. I didn't have a set idea in mind when I started the project, so the color scheme was more or less randomly decided after hearing mention of the US Navy's Blue Angels somewhere one evening, hence the name.

The rifle was meant to be the centerpiece for the build, but it came out rather underwhelming as far as it's colors compared to the MS itself. I like the design, I just couldn't come up with a proper idea for the paint job on it. I had originally intended on something closer to the Aliens Pulse Rifle, but decided that'd be better suited for another kit somewhere down the road. Instead, this is more a variable beam rifle, with the barrel extending for longer ranged shots, shortening for closer, rapid fire.

As to the kit itself, this was my second master grade (the first being the Zeta 2.0), so this one is really showing it's age. It's barely more than a high grade, though with the coming of the IBO line, this thing felt really, really old, much more so than it should have, I think. Still, I enjoyed it for the most part. My least favorite things about it were the hands, and an annoying tendency for the whole backpack to fall off, or just the outer armor of the backpack to come loose, as it was more or less just sitting there without any real grab to it.

Had some doubts as to whether I was even going to finish this build, honestly. I'd go a few weeks without doing much to it because I wasn't sure where I was going, then when it came down to the last month, I just kept having set backs: had to strip paint and redo several parts after early airbrushing attempts, had one of the ankle armors break before priming, had the head antenna break before the first top coating, had at least two or three really bad messes with the panel line wash that left some areas looking bad, dropped parts going missing in the carpet for half-hour or more at a time, and had one part vanish completely (the collar piece that fits inside the yellow collar part, though I think it looks better without it, personally), and thought I'd lost the gray 'jaw" part of the head this evening after I'd did the final clear coat, but luckily I had just left it attached to one of my painting clips. These last two weeks had me uttering some very delightful curses, to say the least, lol.

In conclusion, the top three takeaways from this project:
1 - Have a plan! - I went in without a solid idea of what I was going to do, and I never could decide exactly what it was I was going for, so I spent a few weeks cutting pla-plate into itty-bitty strips and sticking them all over the place, only for the colors to wind up hidding most of the details. I had no idea what the paint scheme was going to be, I had no idea what I wanted the custom details to be like, and I even stuck some parts on there just because I had them sitting in my parts bin. Probably hurt the build pretty bad, but in the end, it came out rather not bad overall.

2 - Practice, practice, practice! - Especially in regards to the airbrush. I had picked up a couple rattle cans about halfway through the build because I had thought to just spray the kit with those instead of using the airbrush because I was rather intimidated by it, but in the end I went through with it. I was getting better towards the end, and I've got more kits waiting for paint that I'm going to be practicing on in the coming weeks. I had tried a few practice sessions with paper and scrap pieces, but when it came right down to it, I learn better by practicing the real thing, so that's what I did, for better or worse.

3 - Lighting is Key - Another thing I've learned, rather early, in my airbrushing experience is that proper lighting is key. My workspace is limited; I have to use my build area for my spray booth, so I can't keep the thing out all the time, and with the lights I have available, I just don't have proper lighting in the booth. The two lights I use while building and the overhead just don't light evenly, so I kept running into problems seeing the part lit well from all angles, so this led to colors not quite meshing up properly on parts that were meant to be together, and overall the dark blue color being a lot darker than I had wanted, mainly so that I could be sure that all parts wereproperly coated. Definitely going to be modifying the spray booth in the near future.

Thank you! I've not tried their paint, but their primer worked just as good as Tamiya's from what I could see. I had a bit of a problem with the top coat, as it frosted on the first layer on most parts, but I think that was environmental or a factor of the rough paint surface (still not got the smooth airbrush paint job down yet), but it cleared up completely on the second layer to get that high gloss sheen. Definitely a good choice.

I like their primers. They cover just as well and fill in some spots just as well as the expensive stuff. Plus it comes in multiple colors. Some of their paints are great some not so much. The problem is the pigment size that they use in some of the paints. Like the metalics it will clog up an Airbrush but if you stick to the normal colors and I personally stick to the Flat/Matt finish, I find they go on easier and if they are a bit ruff I can hit them with something like a 1000 grit paper wet sanding and they smooth out really well.

Believe it or not, that's Tamiya's Lemon Yellow. Honestly, it went down easier for me than the blue, in terms of smoothness. Only problem I had was getting it to match tone across pieces; wound up having to mask off the inner parts and sticking them together to give another layer or two in order to get them matching.

I happened to have three versions of the Barbatos Lupus/Rex laying around, so I figured why not enter one in each category? It's for a good cause, after all. So, here we go...

Beginner Level - Barbatos Lupus Rex (straight build with panel lining):

Intermediate Level - Barbatos Lupus Heavy Striker (bit of accessorizing, kitbashing and detail painting. The shoulders are a combination of Graze shoulders and leftover skirt armor from the Seravee GNHW/b kit, and the more Graze parts make up the backpack fins):

And the big entry...
Advanced Level - Ninja Nurse Barbi (FM Barbatos Lupus Rex with some custom paint and a few less additions than I had originally intended to do, but real life just proved too time consuming. Still, pretty happy with how it came out, even if I didn't get everything done. The core idea is still there.)
