Speaking of robot fights, has anyone else been watching the latest Battlebots tournament that's been airing on ABC?

OH YEAH!

Sorry America......I'm rooting for Japan on this one. Come on Shining Finger!

When we can do mecha like these

14434

14435

from the PC and Table-Top RPG Heavy Gear we can truly challenge the Japanese!!!!

By the way if anyone out there still owns the Original Heavy Gear 2 Game you might want to try this fix out for running it on Windows - 7. So far (and I have only gotten the training missions redone) it works. Here is the Link; http://forums.heavygear.com/index.php?p=/discussion/321/how-to-get-heavy-gear-2-working-on-windows-7

Gotta go with Japan on this one...at least until we build Gipsy Danger.

i gotta go with Japan because two people piloting a MS is not a good thing. with tanks you have a commander who is running the show. i dont see one of those two being able to take charge. one of them would have to take command and the other would have to follow orders immediately. these two will come up with a battle plan then it will fall to shit and they will sit there and bitch at each other and get shot up. thats how i see this going. and if the Japaneses targeting system is a real on and not just a gimmick then the US team is screwed. i actually like the US MSes weapons more if a paint gun fight is what they do. you can only aim in one direction as a time. spaying and praying is rarely a good thing. only for cover fire.

I disagree with the dual pilot set up, if one focuses on just moving and the other just on firing that would make the mech alot more efficient, of course teamwork and communication is paramount.

"But you know we really need... MELEE COMBAT. I want to punch them to scrap them and known them down to do it."

Shining Finger confirmed.

But seriously, I am excited. Like, I know it's just a PR stunt by two corporations. But at the same time it's still giant robots fighting. And the thought of that makes me so giddy.

Screw Megabots. Before I was generally neutral since both companies had made their robots on their own. Now Megabots is trying to get a sizable funding advantage through crowdfunding by appealing to base tribalism. And before anyone asks "why can't the Japanese team do the same thing?", they should know that historically the Japanese have not been as open to supporting crowdfunding projects as westerners have. I hope now hope Japan wipes the floor with the American machine, especially if there's a sizable funding disadvantage going in.

The hell did you think this was? It was obvious from the start that this was just a stunt to get more funding and actually finish the bots. Did you never hear about Megabots until now? Their whole thing was to make their own robot fighting league, but they only got enough funds to make one.

Sudiobash Heavy Industry took them up on it because it'll get them more press and sponsors. This isn't actually a competition: it is a mutually beneficial partnership. They only want people to think they're competing to get people riled up and talking.

Also, Sudiobashi Heavy Industry has had a head start and seems to be a bigger company. Hell, they've actually got more than one robot, even selling some. They've been making money from selling other Kuratas and from events and stuff liking having a Kuratas appear in The Next Generation Patlabor.

The whole thing is obviously a publicity stunt, that goes without saying. I just want a clean competition. As for Team Japan having a head start, it wasn't the Japanese who issued the challenge. The American team knew about Japan's head start when they challenged them. The jingoistic tribal nonsense used to try to drum up extra funds after the fact is what I find distasteful. There are other ways to get funding. And while I don't doubt Japan will make better use of each dollar invested, there's a certain point at which the disparity in funds could cause the competition to resemble the MLB (I.e. One team, the Yankees, is able to simply buy a significant competitive advantage due to their deeper pockets). No one is served in the long run by a lopsided one way battle. An exciting, fair battle between two relatively equal competitors is in the best long term interest for everyone who wants to see this type of competition become popular. The barely-not-racist jingoistic crap is a disservice to everyone.

But the bald eagle shoulder guns with sunglasses are almost cute.

I'm with you these guys are pathetic joke. You can easily make it more stable. There's no point of a copilot its not like they have a advance targeting system. Hell I don't even see cameras (not the gopros) on the guns for line of sight targeting. The pos isnt even self loading so you no the copilot isnt really doing much. And why the hell it there 8+levers and 2 joystick? Take about shitty design. All the idiots needed was the hydrostatic joysticks and computer that were mostly on the multi track loader they got the tracks from. The would have enough controls on those joysticks to control all the arm movements and weapons firing. Then use a set of foot pedals for you movement. But what do I know. I'm just a guy that works with heavy machinery everyday.

I hope the USA wins just because of this.

This thing is just...FAN EFFING TASITC.

It's just cobbled together parts that uncle sam threw up on. Even has a damn Cigar. On top of that it has a Chainsaw and a V-8. Screw Technology just throw some Junk yard parts together like red necks and call out another country because why the hell not.

God damn I usually don't get super patriotic (Aside from on the 4th, It's my favorite holiday and I go full stupid about things) but hot damn it's athing of beauty in an ironic, FU way.

That and seeing people get so salty over crowd funding in a publicity stunt makes me just want this thing to win more.

Now that was glorious. I think they're right, this should be a league. And as technology progresses utilizing lighter and stronger materials, more powerful actuators and motors, and better power sources, this could be the start of something amazing.

- - - Updated - - -

So apparently a tech company from South Korea is already working on a suitable challenger:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5HMYUHTuLs

My only criticism towards this design is that it looks a little top-heavy. If you noticed in the video, it's hooked up to an overhead crane to help support it. If they can better manage the weight distribution, they may actually have solid design. As of this moment, we have now entered the experimental stage of mecha design. While these machines are nothing more than basic contraption, given time they could truly amount to something amazing. After all, 100 years ago nobody thought that the airplane would catch on and now they're everywhere as a part of our daily lives.
