View Full Version : Bazookafied's FrankenSuits

If there's one thing I've always enjoyed about Gunpla, it's been mixing and matching parts. As far back as I've been building Gunpla (1999), it's been less about replicating the exact appearance of the Hero Mobile Suits of each show and more about sort of creating my own "side-story esque" suits. I would literally spend hours mixing and matching parts, writing up stories for them, and then stage battles on the table of how things went down. As childish as it was, it was addicting and fun to feel like these were part of true Gundam lore!

As a result, many of my kits have been Frankenstein'd to suit whatever story I had in mind for them. Many of these mixed up suits ended up turning into full-blown Gunpla projects as I got more serious about building and finishing each kit. I often change my mind or experiment around with more kits instead of nailing down an idea most of the time, so there's only a handful of completed builds I have. To me, working on the projects and switching things around is almost more enjoyable than finishing one. Plus, with Bandai still releasing more fun kits, more options become available for me... so it's almost dangerous to say "Hey, this is what I'm going to do now" out of fear that in a few short months another kit would be released that would give me more ideas.

Here's a few that I've blown the dust off of that I have been experimenting and having fun with.

I have a lot of fun with grunts, especially the GM. The one in focus is a sort of a high-output GM Kai. It makes use of a Nemo torso and legs but has GM III arms and skirt armor. I usually have one of the GM III shoulder missile launchers on it, too. Behind him with the green torso is mostly leftover parts from that combination. I've thought about making that unit more of a scout/recon type suit with shoulder-mounted sensors/cameras.

It's no coincidence that the White Dingo team colors on a GM Sniper II give you a "Patlabor" feel (they have the same mechanical designer!) but I really like how the armor and pistols work on this from the GM Sniper II K9 kit from GBF. I left out the K9 backpack and the shoulder-mounted knife and left the normal thruster pack the Sniper II comes with. It's much more of a Close-Combat gunslinger with some courage-lined armor to get you there!

If you can't already tell from my avatar, I'm a BIG fan of Advance of Zeta and the Titans Test Team. Many of my custom units revolve around that idea. This is the Build Gundam Mk II with a bit less "flash" to it. I've swapped out the red feet for black and simplified the equipment. One of the things I like about these GBF kits is that they have custom parts that can still make units look like they're "Period correct" but be some test unit or something like that.

Speaking of AoZ, here's my favorite Work-In-Progress! Instead of swapping stuff around with other kits, I actually have different equipment setups specifically made for this fella. Reconnaissance, Long-Range, Heavy Equipment, Close Combat, there's several options for this specific unit... because I love the CORE. The RX-121-1 Gundam Hazel TR-1 is, above all, my favorite mobile suit design across any timeline. I've added a bit of a personal touch to this one's head. It's built around the original, but the sensor crest going over the helmet is from a TR-5 kit and the armor extensions, intakes, and extra V-Fins have been added. I love the look and it really makes it look aggressive!

I'll have more info on some of these later!

Thanks! It's based off the RX-121-3C Hyzenthlay (http://z7.invisionfree.com/Titans_Test_Team/index.php?showtopic=1159&st=0), one of my favorite variations in the Hazel Series. One of the sketches from DHM had this awesome headgear on the V Fin that I attempted to recreate. It's the one on the bottom row in the middle.

I had thought about trying to build the full Hyzenthlay, but with so few parts existing to make such a creation, I kinda axed the idea and leaned more towards making this my own unique variation of a Titans Test Team unit. At the core of all the optional equipment I've made for it is this kit. It's a HGUC Gundam Hazel Custom kit with the modified head and an alternate piece for the cockpit armor that is from the Primrose accessory kit that DHM released with one of their magazines. The shoulder pieces are also from the Primrose kit and can mount optional equipment.
