So I'm finally breaking down and going to start working on a personal Duel Gundam (works as it is my favorite MS). The main goal is to make it more focused towards close combat, and later I'll be working on other variants, the other one in my head is a long range/artillery variant similar to the Buster.

I'll update this as I hit certain milestones as I plan to go full out. This is going to be on the HG Duel.

So for now, as I need to start getting the parts clipped from the sprues, if anyone has any suggestions on other Duel variants I'd be happy to hear as well as a good recommendation for a sword(s) I could use...Current ideas are Strike Noir, Sword Strike, Destiny, and Sandrock.

Pics once I get the parts off the sprue and start the trimming :-D

Very cool sounding project. I think the Noir or the Destiny would be a good choice to add some close combat skills to the Duel. The Noir pack would look really good.

I was thinking along the same lines with the Noir pack...now I just have to wait for the store to get the Strike Noir back in stock

Some Kotobukiya weapon packs could provide extra swords too without buying an entire kit, though that's only if you're looking for something big as their products are more in scale with 1/100.

I had forgotten about the Kotobukiya weapon sets. But Dlinker is right, they are rather large for a 1/144 kit.

Ok...progress photos to come tonight.

Now call me crazy, but in terms of the Duel's sword, how about the Throne Zwei's Buster Sword? I'm gonna give it a try but I think it can work

zwei's buster sword would be nice since both the duel and the sword have some curved parts so they'll compliment with each other.

I agree, I think that it would look really good with the Duel.

Ok..so PICTURE TIME!

All the parts for the Duel itself all cleaned up and ready to get painted (not that the color is really changing, love the original color scheme for the original Duel)

The Buster Sword next to one of my already built Duels..

And finally, couple of shots of how I figured out how to mount the swords when they weren't in use.

Wow, that sword is huge. And it looks like mounting it onto the shoulder will work really well, and look pretty natural as well.

That sword fits the Duel nicely. It'll look great once you fit it on the shoulder.

Yeah, I'm actually surprised at how fitting that big sword is with the rest of the Duel. The shoulder mounts are a nice touch, too. I remember another modeler doing something similar with his MG Duel some months ago.

So my plans got derailed a bit....finally found some parts I was looking for....the Sword Striker pack....so I have some experimentation to do tonight.

Ok...so yeah I've been a tad lazy with this project....but I've finally made some major headway....all that is really left is the armaments now.

Looking really good so far man. I like the left shoulder, it fits the design and scheme and really adds a menacing feel to the suit.

Liking the colors so far. The front skirt armor look a lot better than the original too.

Looking great man! I really can't put myself in doing custom builds.

Thanks for the comments.

So this has been a learning experience for me for sure...I'll just detail out my process and where I think I could have done better.

1) prep all the pieces for the main mobile suit and organize by part (arm/leg/head/body/waist)
2) paint all the pieces for each part *(should have primed them first to make this part easier)
3) assemble each piece and then assemble the main mobile suit* (think I should have just assembled the suit, primed, then painted it)
4) Prime the armor pieces, then paint, then assemble onto main mobile suit* (trying to learn from earlier)

And for those interested...Here is the kit list and what I've used from each kit.

1/144 Duel Gundam Assault Shroud (main mobile suit, minus the left arm)
1/144 Perfect Strike (Left arm and shoulder armor)
1/144 Blu Duel (chest/legs/torso armor)
1/144 Gundam Throne Zwei (GN Buster Sword - still WIP)

The next custom build I do, whenever that may be, will probably just consist of using 2 different kits and figuring out how to make it into one badass suit...open to suggestions on that one (*note, it is stupid easy for me to get kits here, just a short trip to the mall)

I like it. The sword pack shoulder works really well with the design of the Duel. The two-tone blue is nice as well.

Before I forget...

Setsunason54, I started this custom build with the HG 1/144 scale models, so if I screwed up (and I did, picture doesn't show it well on the shroud) I didn't ruin a $50+ model.

So once I get some time off from work, I'll wrap up the Duel with his sword...and for my next custom 1/144 build (I blame Gundam Build Fighters for me starting all this) I'm going to attempt to combine the Calamity and Abyss into an awesome long range firepower suit.

Allrighty, the Duel is finished!

While I wait for the Abyss and Calamity to arrive, gonna do some brainstorming for another custom to start on...might as well rename this to a constant WIP thread heh.

This came out really well. Good choice of parts and weapons along with a consistent color scheme. Good stuff, man.

Very well done. The added parts work in well with the design of the Duel and the color scheme looks great.

Great job. I really like the way the color scheme and the added parts look together.
