View Full Version : Saz's GBWC 2014 Entry! Nu Gundam Ver. Katoki

Sazabee
April 18, 2014, 1:16 PM
Alright folks! I've been wanting to make this Gundam and actually I entered this alongside my Strike Freedom as my 2 Entries for GBWC14 at A-Kon in Dallas (Yo if you are there, stop by and say hi!)

I'd like to off-course make this specifically mine. As such I need these specifically

Color Scheme Shadowing?(I loathe White as a color but to make it stand out I definitely think I need to do this) Detailing Posing etc.

For those that own the kit, what are things you'd tell me about how it is? Some changes you think that need to be done (Aside the Katoki Legs)?

If you have a Color Scheme in mind, let me know! I'd love to hear it and possibly use your ideas (Not steal, ehrm). Who knows lady luck might just grace me with the title Best of Show :P

Ordering the kit now!

Let's hope for a fruitful build.

Ciao~

Can't wait to see your build of this man. I am looking forward to it, as eventually I'll also get a Nu Ver Ka.

I got the kit, but haven't found the time to build it, much less open the plastic containing the runners so it's still in the box.

In terms of changes, I've only heard about modding the way the funnels mount on the back since the out-of-box option is supposedly weak and unreliable.

Got em' Coach!

Alright so as far as my current progress...

Just snapped the Frame together, I was able to get the Arms & Torso done up last night and got the Waist & Legs done today (I'd say that the Waist/Legs took me about 5-6 Hours)

I'm loving this kit and it definitely has been a blast. Much much much better than any kits I've made. The Plastic quality has definitely been much better than the Strike Freedom.

Anyways here's some pictures.

Oh and Me & 2 Buddies from the Austin Gundam Club got together at my place starting at about 1 and just had a build till about 6 to go to uh Happy Hour lol. 2 Rounds and some odd number Cocktails we we're good. He's building the RG Strike Freedom as his 1st RG :D

And after snap fitting the frame I went ahead and drilled the places to put the Metal Parts. (On the frame)

Anyways, that's pretty much it as far as the Day & small part of the night in terms of Progress I've had.

Anyways till next time.

Good progress so far man. I noticed you already put in a few of the Psycho Frame pieces. Are you going to use the foil stickers or paint the underside?

I've yet to decide to be honest but 2 chances out of 1 I'll stick with the Foil Stickers :|
I don't think I can get the Mirror Look unless I go to the trouble of it.

Very interesting kit with those chairs. Never seen them before.

I noticed that you have primed the manipulators. I must ask, does it cause any issues with the fingers bending? And what kind of primer did you use? I ask because I'll be painting the same hands for my Stein.

I posted this on the old forum.

Those chairs are really cute. Are 1/144 Gundam able to sit on them?

Be very careful with the manipulators. You used Tamiya Primer, right? Lacquer thinner eats through ABS, making it brittle. The MP-1 hands are already really prone to breaking already.

AHHHHHH! The hasegawa 1/12 kits! I've been wanting to get a bunch of these for my action figure display, especially the Japanese style arcade boxes and gashapon dispenser sets.

I'm liking Nu Gundam is coming along so far, but I'm curious, Sazabee: Aren't you concerned about the paint rub in the in the joints applying primer to a whole limb like that?

They are so adorable lol, and as far as the manipulators I have yet to come across any issues with them. Bends just fine for me and I used Plamocolour's Primer (Lacquer). Borrowed it from a friend in the Club and it didn't require any Thinning at all. It is very consistent too and even levels itself.

I actually did not, I used Lacquer Paints though no Thinner as the Primer is good to go in terms of out of bottle. I'll keep that in mind since I didn't know that…

Thanks for the heads-up though. As far the rest of the kit, it'll be ran over with only Acrylic Paints.

If my Hobby Town ever carries other Hasegawa kits I'm definitely getting them.

As far as the joints, since it's the Inner Frame I'm not too worried to be honest. Although the way I painted it is by Primering it in one position, letting it dry to handle and then bending it until essentially the whole part is primered through and through. The way I looked at it last night was I didn't really miss anything when it's bent and when it's straight.

Hopefully I can wrap this kit up by putting on it's Paint. Aiming for different shades of Gray I guess (Though I know I'll be using some Tan/Chrome Silver). Hobby Town should have my Tamiya Flat Acryl this Wednesday though :D (70% Future 30% Tamiya Flat makes such a good Matte Kote, even comparable or better than the Alclad Flat Kote)

Good, good. I find that even though the hands are really tight at first, they get loose pretty quickly. May I ask what planes you have for this project? Is it going to be a custom color scheme?

To be honest I have no idea... I really want to have a custom color Scheme but if nothing else then I guess the original colors x.x

That makes me a bit less worried about painting up my Stein.

As it should!

Anyways I got some progress done today!

Painted the legs :D (Missing the top-coat but hopefully I'll have it by Thursday). Aiming to finish the frame by Friday.

Anyways here it is!

http://s27.postimg.org/ng6qdx337/L2m_V0_Y0.jpg

Decided to paint this part Chrome Silver rather than Sky Gray, I've always liked "some" shiny.

http://s27.postimg.org/jijgoig9v/pjdq_Ut_P.jpg

Painted the Hydraulics some delicious Desert Yellow & Coppa

http://s27.postimg.org/bbmvj70tf/XQJo_AUk.jpg

Same goes for the pipes in the back (I wanted this to kind of be different in comparison to most others who use Silver/Chrome)

http://s27.postimg.org/9vbd11xwj/5df_ZKL4.jpg

Didn't come out too bad I think.

Here's what the leg looks like for the time being (Missing the top coat & the Metal Parts :P)

I wasn't sure what to expect to be honest; I'm digging how the Copper/Desert Yellow complement each other. I was expecting it to be harsh since the color tones are pretty close but you know what, it is pretty damn good. The fact it came out looking like actual tubing was definitely a bonus lol. Plus Definitely love how the Copper looks on anything to be real. Going to hopefully wrap up the Skirts/Chest and possibly Arms tonight, and waiting patiently for the Tamiya Flat from Hobby Town to arrive (I ordered 2 of them since it was out of stock)

Going to be using the 70% Floor Wax & 30% Flat Tamiya as a Coat (Hopefully it does well with this paint). I recall all of ya'll saying it ended badly for you guys but what exactly was wrong?

For me I think it was the mixture I used. But when it dried it became chalky and rigid. Like, it felt like the part had turned to stone. I played around with a few more mix ratios but never could get it down. So I just abandoned the idea and moved on to something else.

Bossguy
April 29, 2014, 4:33 PM
I've heard that the mix can be very unpredictable. It either turns glossy, fogs up, or just orange peels on you. I've heard from many people on the web that you have to get the mixture just right, otherwise it'll do one of those three things mentioned above. I think it'll just be easier for you to get a designated flat coat.

thwalker13
April 29, 2014, 4:36 PM
That's basically what I can to the conclusion of Bossguy. It's so much easier. The Model Masters Flat Acrylic works very well, it just dries and clogs up my airbrush super fast.

Dlinker
April 29, 2014, 5:20 PM
I can confirm what Bossguy said as well. When I tried it, I followed the ratios online as close as possible and either it clogged up the AB or the mixture wasn't flat enough, resulting in having to spray several coats. Vallejo Matt Varnish (my current method) causes tip dry every few minutes, but it's easily remedied and I usually just do a couple of sprays per section and it's a nice flat finish.

I'm fixin' to give it a good try, would ya'll happen to remember the Ratios you've used?

I'm going with 2 Ratios, 7 Future; 3 Flat and 10 Future; 1 Flat.

I've heard the 10:1 works better but I've heard good things regarding 7:3 also.

Also where do you guys buy your Vallejo Paints? I can't seem to find the Airbrush Vallejo's anywhere.

Bossguy
April 29, 2014, 7:17 PM
You can get Vallejo off Amazon and eBay. Those are probably the most convenient places to get them.

Dlinker
April 29, 2014, 9:06 PM
I usually get my Vallejo stuff from spruebrothers.com and sometimes from miniaturemarket.com.

I tried both of the ratios you mentioned. 7:3 (Future:Flat) was the one that tended to clog the AB, while 10:1 (Future:Flat) required too many coats to get the right finish. Mind you, I was comparing results with a can of Mr. Hobby Top Coat (the little blue can). Maybe you'll have much better than luck at it than us, haha.

Cool, thanks.

Just noticed how much paint I have so I'm probably going to stick with what I have lol.

When I run out (if ever) then I'll try to see some Vallejo but to be honest I'm happy with the current set of paints I have and just waiting on the Tamiya Coat :P

And yea DLink I hope that I have better results with it! (LADY LUCK PLZ HELPARINO ME)

Alright so I got to paint pretty much the entire Inner Frame (Excluding the Arms) today and it went pretty smoothly I think. Now I'm going to hopefully detail it a little bit more (Really a sad shame it'll be covered ;__;

On to some pictures of practically not being able to tell whatever progress.

Went ahead and put some Dericious Copper up in here.

http://s10.postimg.org/rjrta6wy1/x09_VCNN.jpg

And yeah, I painted some parts of the Frame Gunmetal (Hard to tell that it is from the pictures since it looks black there.) The Gunmetal definitely looks better up close (Since you see the sparkle in it)

That's pretty much it for the progress tonight...

Now to paint the Arms & wrap-up.

Once I finish that up hopefully Thursday I get my Flat Coat and get started on those and have the whole inner frame coated by the weekend.

Phew~

Two colors for vents is more ideal and realistic so stick with that. The metal parts are looking rather nice on those colors.

I like how the vents look, like Dlinker said, they appear to be more realistic that way, even if they were matching colour, I'm sure they would be sooted up, or at the very least chipped down to bare metal.

Damn that looks good dude. And id keep the chest vents just the way they are.

I think that the current dual color look for the vents is great.

I agree with Zeta-G and Zaku. Leave those vents how you have them. They look great.

And those metal detail parts and thrusters are really making that kit come out great. The armor is looking super sexy.

Those vents are excellent! Great job on everything so far.

Got some work done this afternoon before I have to go out for stuff tonight x.x;;

Anyways, pics right?

http://s27.postimg.org/ffgwllfn7/l1_Qfd_Ms.jpg

Masked some parts of the pieces to not use the stickers and to give it a different color and take away from the monotonous solid piece. Now I'm going to go with Gray, White & Desert Sand(???idk the name lol)

http://s27.postimg.org/44e8x88s3/lrnppfc.jpg

http://s27.postimg.org/ba5zzohv7/Oi_H5l8q.jpg

So I decided to go for a more obvious shade on this project rather than the "splotch" that happened with Strike Freedom. I'm definitely feeling much more confident on this piece than I did with the SF. I feel that I have better control of the AB and I think over-all the kit is looking better.

http://s27.postimg.org/3swskgsc3/sa_Xa_Kj6.jpg

See?

Also got all the pieces on the clips Coated with Future so I can finally see the head completed tomorrow lol. Also 1st time using Enamel Wash method on the eyes, can't really see the full effect since I don't have the LED yet but from the looks of it, it looks good.

5 months into Gunpla and I've learned so much lol. Thank you all for the kind words, motivation and critiques. Let me know if you think there is something I should change or improve on in terms of this project.

Waist unit completely done though! (Pre-Decal) and so is the head :D

Took the leg parts off the runners, shaved, etc. Hopefully get the chance to primer it tomorrow!

Got the white parts of the legs drilled and primed! this was pretty much my only Airbrush work for today but hey, it got done :P

Difference between panel lined and no panel line. Even though it was shaded and all, it being Lined shows a major difference.

Now as far as the suit itself, here's how far I've gone!

Got some more work done on the Nu today!

http://s10.postimg.org/e67pylajt/Qim_Di82.jpg

Decided to take the Fin Funnels out of the Runners so I can work on them when I finish up painting the legs of Nu. These are components for 3 Fin Funnels, though no shown are the Gray Parts.

http://s10.postimg.org/r0ad5odd5/g_KAk_Cg7.jpg

This is what 6 Fin Funnels look like not snap fitted.

http://s10.postimg.org/tt3kppdpl/fr_Ukv_WK.jpg

Decided to try on the Hi-Nu Effect Parts on the Nu and it isn't a 100% Fit but I think it looks pretty good. Let me know your honest opinions please.

http://s10.postimg.org/ijauur8o9/Jc_FHRPo.jpg

Did the same (Take pieces off runners) for the Chest and the Shoe Laces for the Nikes. I'm probably going to put together the Chest after the legs, then just wrap the MS up... I mean the Fin Funnels I'm probably going to put some work into them (idk maybe not lol, I have no idea what I'd do differently though)

http://s10.postimg.org/uz7koi209/s_Q5j4ud.jpg

I was able to paint the White Armor Parts for both legs so I'm pretty happy with that. Now I just need to Gloss these suckers, Line it and paint the remaining Gray Armor Parts (Which will be painted with other colors aswell!)

http://s10.postimg.org/t8ojn0kh5/U49_UHG3.jpg

This picture pretty much shows all progress done today in terms of Paint.

Phew~

This project is coming along pretty well... I so wanna win a thing from GBWC x.x;;

The project is definitely turning and looking pretty well.

http://s29.postimg.org/3uupocn2v/Qowh25_Q.jpg

Here you see the Leg Armor, I painted the outer edges the shade of brown that I painted over using some Gray but it does stand out and when Lined I'm sure it'll stand out even more.

http://s29.postimg.org/6euxw700n/Y2d_FDdo.jpg

The Mr. Sol Neo, seriously this stuff is great. Makes masking a much easier task lol.

http://s29.postimg.org/j7j1w4bmf/Dkn_VV0_N.jpg

Tomorrow you guys will get to see how it looks with the Legs & Skirt painted up.

Oh and I also got my LEDs today! And got the head ready too :P

Tomorrow!

Although I am helping my son with his "Your Story" presentation for Kindergarten lol.

He's doing his story using Minecraft! (He's 5 but is very much computer literate). Going to be printing up some pictures since the project is on Thursday (He's been practicing just haven't gotten to make his Poster Board). He was wanting to use either his Unicorn SD Kits or that lol, opted him to go with Minecraft... for now lol.

Anyways, I didn't get a chance to take a picture of the legs with the White Armor pieces on but I promise you (atleast to me) it looks good.

Been a couple of days since my last update but I got some work done guys!

1st with some of the not so serious things.

I decided to put the remaining parts of the kits together so I can uhh play with them lol.

Alright now to the general progress of the mobile suit itself.

http://s30.postimg.org/l1ck4ifa9/0qt_La_FJ.jpg

Alright so the head unit is practically done, though this picture is slightly outdated since I did put the metal vulcans in already. Looks nice though. (Green doesn't show through the vulcans, luckily)

And let's show you how the Skirt & Legs look!

I see that the Thrusters are lacking igniters so I'm considering putting IC Sockets in the center to give it a better feel.

But the legs look pretty good right? Any tips that ya'll can share?

The Bottom part of the MS is already flat-coated and everything too :P

Dlinker
May 19, 2014, 12:57 AM
Everything is looking rather beautiful, especially the skirt armor. Shame about the shoulder parts. Since this is a competition piece, you may have to do something about the area lacking the parts since it's noticeable and I'm assuming it won't look good in the eyes of the judges. Maybe fill it in so it's not obvious?

The legs are done well with the only tip being maybe to go lighter on the pre-shade next time? That's just me, though. I'm not a big fan of heavy pre-shades.

thwalker13
May 19, 2014, 9:10 AM
Everything is looking really good man. Sucks to hear about the piece, if time wasn't an issue I'd say order a new one from Gentei Parts.

I'd probably also echo what Dlinker said. I too am not a big fan of heavy shading. Though it does give the Nu a burnt look, so one would easily say it was "scorched"

Bossguy
May 19, 2014, 10:04 AM
That head looks awesome. I'm not a fan of heavy preshading like Thwalker13 and Dlinker, but it gives it a nice weathered effect. The shoulder pieces are a problem. I recommend buying that part from GK when it comes back up, and have it shipped to you via EMS.

Garret Masterson
May 19, 2014, 10:25 AM

I personally went with the pretty dark shade for this specific project and I'm going to be sticking to it x.x;;

I feel that the kit will come together nicely when all done and finishing up the torso & arms kind of reaffirms me on that idea.

I'm not entirely sure how I'll fare against competition but here's to taking it home boys!

Now let's go ahead and check out some progress.

Let me know what you think.

I would have ordered this but since the tournament doesn't allow any 3rd Party Kits to be used I can't x.x lol

Had to stick with the Bandai ones which don't have a Psyco Frame...

- - - Updated - - -

Since the MS was standing and I got the chance to finish the Sabers, Shield & Backpack I couldn't help myself from just painting the Base so that he can be aerial x.x

Almost done with this project! Just need to work on about 3/4 of the Fin Funnels and Bazooka & it'll be good to go. (Well Beam Rifle is almost painted, just a couple more masking)

Although the shield came out really really white (rookie mistake or something on my part)... I'm going to be giving it another shadowy grave using either Tamiya Weathering Kits... I'm hoping it'll workout but heres to being optimistic about this.

The shield definitely looks out of place. But DARN, that kit looks sweet. I love the bottom of the feet. That's top quality right there.

Alright.

2 Part update over here!

Got most of the work done for the Nu, here it is! I'll be done with the full kit come Saturday and ready for competition on June 7th.

Let's look at some Weapons being worked on.

I wasn't sure how I felt about this color but it kind of grew one me lol.

YEEEEEEE

Now let's see how the Funnels are doing.

Even all of this I still hate White as a color.

Decal'd! Now just need the Funnel Frames.

It's definitely coming together pretty well.

I can't wait till tomorrow when the rest of the parts dry x.x

Pretty much it for the 1st Part of the Update.

I played around and took some pictures of the Gundam itself though using my phone so it's lacking but on my next post it'll be up!

This journey has been fun. Almost sad to see it close.

How do you guys feel the Colors on the Funnel work? I personally like how the Orange looks in contrast to the Dark Metal Blue-ish thing. Thoughts?

I like the funnels. I don't think the colors you chose will be a problem. I see you splurged on the add-on set! :D

The orange is fine, seems like a good fit with the rest of the colors you used on the main kit. I see you got that rifle clipped rather delicately there. I always have trouble finding the right spot to mount rifles during painting when there are no spots for Blu-Tak.

Thanks and yea lol, I managed to snag them. Also had to order Additional Effect Parts + Decals from Samuel since I accidentally spilled Micro Sol on the original set ruining the Funnel Decals x.x

Yup lol, so I go for the ones that will be covered.

Alright... So now let's show off the Mobile Suit that I've been playing with.

Also dem IC Sockets man, I hit those off twice already so QQ lol.

Here it is my months work! (Minus the Funnels off-course!)

Though the pictures we're all taken with my Phone so the quality is kind of low.

Anyways here.

I'm still a fan of how the soles of the feet look lol, I find it really nice.

Likewise with the Knees, oh god Metal Pistons are so good.

& now to just dump a bunch of him lol. Also what do you guys think of the Base? Did the paint come out well?

I agree, it's one mighty fine Nu. Apart from a couple of areas where the pre-shade isn't as neat as the rest, everything looks great. Loving the blue you used on the bazooka too.

I have to ask, any issue with paint chipping or scratching off when putting the parts together or posing the kit around?

Bossguy

Wow. That is beautiful. If I had one gripe, it would be the slightly messy preshading on the crotch and knee areas, but it probably only shows up in the close up pictures.

The orange-yellow you chose looks great against the black. You put so much detail into this, that it's honestly hard to figure out what exactly is going on in the picture, haha.

That is one fantastic looking Nu Gundam man. I've said it before, but the detail work you put into it is amazing. And the rifle and bazooka just echo that. They look great! I'm also curious as to if you're had any issues with paint chipping or scratching while moving the parts/joints around.

Looks so good, I want to get a Hi-Nu, although I should really get rid of some of my backlog...And build some MG's.

Seriously that build is awesome, every time I look at the photos there is a new detail I didn't see before.
