Hello guys!

I'm gonna be updating this thread with my 1st Serious Build.

Also the very 1st Kit I've ever bought. MG Strike Freedom Full Burst. I've decided to enter a Gunpla Competition under the Intermediate Category. Hosted by GoodGuyDan.

This will be my very 1st attempt at plenty of things... and those are

Airbrushing (This includes any sort of Shading) Gunpla Modifications Creating my own Thrusters, Metal Detailing, etc Scribing Display Base Creation & I'm sure many more to be done.

The deadline IIRC is April 1st but I've set my mind to finish this by the end of March

The Plan

To make Strike Freedom as eye-catching as possible and still stick to it's Original Colors. And in doing so I'll be adding some Metal Details(Ones I made like the Thrusters & Things I pick up at Hobby Town/Lobby). It will also be my 1st attempt at doing any sort of Shadows and hell even airbrushing but I'm hopeful. I've scrapped the idea of LED's as the time won't allow it.

We get it Saz, now get on with the pictures godamn.

OK FINE HERE.

Now I started the project on 3/10/14. I'll try to update this as I get more progress on it done. (Hopefully with Descriptions aswell)

Look at the Thrusters from the kit. Not bad right? I didn't think so but I have bigger plans in mind!

Wow man big undertaking. Im trying to learn how to do modifying myself. My custom Gelgoog is the first time ive tried moding anything. And mybe we can learn toghether then. Although i dont know what else to do. Oh well. I will be watching this project with great intrest.

You certainly have big task. I hope that you are able to make that deadline and meet your goals. Seeing that kit comes together really takes me back to when I got back into Gunpla. The MG Strike Freedom FBM was the 4th MG kit I ever put together. I can't wait to see your progress.

Ah, you're finally getting started on this thing. I would have taken longer to start considering how much you've got planned for it, haha. Some ambitious stuff, but as long as you take it slowly and do things one at a time, you should be golden. It seems like you're off to a good start, already finished with the boring de-nubbing phase.

Yea, thats the plan. I'm willing to pick up some tips from someone learning the same as I :D We're on the same boat in terms of not knowing what else to do hahaha. Thanks :)

Yea, this is my 3rd Kit and I've been told that I shouldn't set such a high goal, but to me whatev's. I'm definitely gonna try my best to meet my goals and specially the deadline. Look forward to it! This will be my own Gunpla

Sweet, man. Progress is looking great.

Thanks friend!

Ah, you're finally getting started on this thing. I would have taken longer to start considering how much you've got planned for it, haha. Yes I am lol, aim for the stars and if I fail I'll land at the moon. Going to be a fun ride. The de-nubbing was made possible by watching a mix of Movies, Anime, Korean Dramas, League & Pokemon. God I hate de-nubbing x.x

Anyways... Let's kick it off with the progress I'd finished last night before going to sleep... (3AM Central)

So the 1st thing to show you is it's V-Fin. Most Gunpla come with a dull ended V-Fin to avoid poking (I'm assuming) and this does not bode well with me. SF's Fin is Sharp and therefore I decided to sharpen it. The difference it makes is actually pretty big (IMO).

http://s24.postimg.org/gpirpumw5/s_Hwnbsx.jpg

http://s24.postimg.org/tbol8xzz9/A5_FQef_G.jpg

Here it is pre-sharpened. Lame looking right?

Well here is what it looks Sharpened.

http://s24.postimg.org/96v13h65h/Ikqsywx.jpg

From here you don't see much of the difference but believe me when I say it is huge!

I decided to drill some holes on his front skirts to put something along the lines of a Sensor (either a IC Socket or a Gold Detailing part I got from Hobby Town, meant for planes...) So in this picture, you'll be able to see what I mean, I have yet to Scribe it but it looks good (Maybe it's just the kit in general lol).

http://s24.postimg.org/6qxt3ddgl/e8_OVMle.jpg

The difference a Sharp V-Fin makes. It adds some agression into the SF and even a hint that you should fear.

Let me know if you'd want to learn how I did the stuff I've and will be doing, that way I can let you know :D

The next post will contain more things that "Pop".

Now we get to some "Modding" phases.

You must understand though that this is the 1st I've ever done anything like this and I'm a nooby so if you see faults and mistakes let me know! My feelings I'll try to not get hurt :P

Ikimasu~

The Dragoons had very little detail or color separation at all... Literally 2 Blue Plastic Pieces slapped together. Aside from painting it properly there isn't much to it...

So I decided to spice it up. I thought of adding some IC Sockets on the tips of it, to give it a metal detailing that actually makes sense! Lazors come out of the Hole rather than the Flat Plastic we we're given!

Here is what they look like. (Pretty Sexy IMO, and the kit isn't even painted!)

http://s24.postimg.org/lufdtqag5/0l_JUl_Ez.jpg

Not bad, this was the 1st attempt. I thought it looked good.

http://s24.postimg.org/fsccgzbdx/zkr_GXpb.jpg

None of these are Super Glued in, they are currently being held up by the plastic itself. Off-course it will be Kragled in once I've painted the kit.

http://s24.postimg.org/uf8pkwkmd/G3j_PLx_U.jpg

http://s24.postimg.org/dnne25kdh/95_PTi_GX.jpg

The Dragoons in the Wings. Looking up at this is awesome. off-course since it's a rough snap build I decided not to "seal" the plastic in prep of washing/priming. What do you think of it? Not bad right :P

And now we get to more modding! This in specific will be the Thrusters.

I thought of the Thrusters as pretty good. Specially since the Gold Plating on it is phenomenal. I mean seriously, the attention to detail in it was astounding. But I was craving more. To make my Gunpla stand out that is.

I could have ordered the Thrusters from eBay and risk it getting here in a month or I could make my own. & That I did.

http://s24.postimg.org/6w1kd1krp/NDexas_D.jpg

Those are literally Pen Tips. All of which I got from work. They are metal and they look good as Thrusters lol.

Now for the work I did on here.

Remove the things seperating the Thrusters (To make just one big space.) File the inside enough to be able to insert 2 Pen Tips. Cut the Metal Pen Tips (Christ, this one took awhile.) File the Metal Pen Tips using a Metal File...(Doesn't always come out smooth gents.)

I thought that in order to make this Gunpla mine, I needed to be creative and make it my own. Although it might be a little "Ghetto" I thought that the results are good, I hope you will to.

http://s24.postimg.org/iiloe682t/Mic_Q3m_W.jpg

That is it for now. I'll be hopefully finishing up the mods today & Priming some stuff. If not so be it :P

I appreciate your guys kind comments, it definitely makes me feel more confident as a builder.

Till the next post! Ciao~

The sharpened V-Fin looks really good. And you are right, it adds a good bit of aggression to the kit.

And I wouldn't ever of thought to use the heads of pens as thrusters. That is a new one for sure. Great idea though.

Excellent progress, and so quickly too. I'm with you with the sharpened V-Fins. I always do that to any kits of mine that have V-Fins and it just adds more accuracy to the look.

The metal tips on the Dragoons are a nice touch and they do look very appropriate. The pen heads... man, I never thought of using those for thrusters. I see the grooves inside of them in that one pic and they look so right. You can be sure that we might be "borrowing" that idea, haha.

Thanks, I was looking for some and they just happened to look really good! Also using the Ball Point Pen as an Igniter inside the Pen Tip would work well.

I intend to paint the inside of the thruster anwyho.

Haha, I try. Glad that you guys can learn from me as I've picked up quite a few tips and tricks from everyone here.

Get a roll of Dynamo Tape if you plan to scribe.

I had some already since I plan every action or proccess for this project. ye

Hot damn those are some clean parts. How do you do that?!

To be honest, I cut the nubs fairly far and cut it shorter using nippers. I then shave it flat using the Xacto Knife. Seems to do the trick and then I sand it using 1000 Grit.

Looking good man. Keep it up. Im looking forward to getting some modding ideas from you. The pen tips idea was ingenious.

Glad it was of assistance. I have a couple more that I intend to use and are often times seen as mundane everyday stuff.

Those pen tip thrusters look damn good already. And what did you use for the barrels of the dragoons? Im thinking about adding vulcans to my Gelgoog. And i might just coppy your idea there.

Hehe, I used IC Sockets for the Beam Emitters. To be honest, I don't think it'd look sharp as Vulcans. Rather I'd use some Beads from Michaels or Hobby Lobby, the ones used for Jewel Making. They look much more proper as Vulcans and are hella cheapies! Although if you do try IC Sockets, let me know how it goes!

Cool, have to say i'm with everyone else pin tops is a great idea. I love the strike will have to pick one up one day.

Thank you :D & TBH I think Strike is the best looking Gundam, hands down. & I mean the real Strike not Strike Freedom.

Now for some Progress!

I was able to do some work today, had my first attempt at some simple Scribing and some minor detailing. But today I was able to prime the Head & Chest so I got that going for me.

Now to the pictures.

http://s30.postimg.org/9ixqzoz41/ov_IC8t8.jpg

I decided to add a small line in the Shoulders, I think it came out pretty well and now I feel I'd be able to mask this area off and color it a darker shade of white for some separation. But even if I don't I think it'll be good. One on the Left is the Scribed one while the one on the Right is Stock.

http://s30.postimg.org/bos1u72kh/a87ga_E9.jpg

Some straight lines on the arms. I found it too plain TBH but with the addition of these 2 lines I think it's pretty cool. Same deal btw, Left is Scribed while the right is Stock.

http://s30.postimg.org/nkebyzs1t/ss_Der_O4.jpg

A little line above the drilled hole. To somewhat bring the eye more down there to show off the Metal Detailing.

http://s30.postimg.org/419qpmta9/Ry_BMO2i.jpg

I love how the kit looks and I can't wait to see it 100%.

http://s30.postimg.org/bwka4g2wx/sdan_Pfx.jpg

Like going on a date and you wash your balls. You have to wash your Gunpla Parts before Priming or Painting. It is that important.

http://s30.postimg.org/oiup1a5dt/ai_Cg8z1.jpg

Head Unit drying from Primer.

http://s30.postimg.org/g1v6qd0ox/Cs6_HM8z.jpg

Chest Unit drying. I decided to Prime the Gold parts White and the rest in Gray. This way I'm not confused and the Gold will be laid down on a lighter primer or something (Mostly so I don't forget).

Not bad progress IMO.

oh and I FINALLY finished cutting and filing all 4 Thrusters. Pain in the ass and it took me about an hour each Thruster using just the blade of a Hacksaw... (Foreal godamn)

Anyways here is the plan. I'm going to lay down some Putty on the Base of the Backpack, let it cure and Super Glue or something the Thrusters.

Here they are currently.

http://s30.postimg.org/pwmbwl4n5/b4_Dx_YIA.jpg

I love how the inside looks x.x; I cannot wait till I paint it Clear Red and add a makeshift Igniter.

http://s30.postimg.org/yaxd6xgap/3ax2_Xh_I.jpg

Well that's it for 03/14/14.

Let me know what you guys think!

Till the next update. Ciao~

Those thrusters on the backpack look great, gives it a much burlier and more serious impression. The new lines are looking nice too and it seems you avoided the issue of scribing the lines too deeply (unlike me when I first tried scribing lines). Are you going to be spraying the gold right on top of the primer or are you putting a base coat on it first?

I'm liking this build and your working so fast where do you find the time

It really wasn't all that hard in the earlier stages, although now it will start being fairly long since I'm at the Priming stage of the build lol, hopefully no imperfections.

I work 4 10HR. Days and have 3 Days off, this week I worked 3 Days and took an extra day-off after completing a long exhaustive project. Sadly I didn't get any progress on Saturday due to going out and pretty much staying completely occupied for Saturday

Alright now some small update on Project Freedom!

I was able to Finish the Skirt & 2 Legs in terms of Priming

It was pretty fun, I was expecting to finish up the Arms tomorrow but since I'm off for 4 days and I was asked by my old boss if I wanted to work on Friday to be a server so why not :P

I personally doubt that there is a big difference :| I just instinctively go with Tamiya since it's what I used for the 2nd Kit I've ever built lol.

Priming the parts seems boring and tedious. Oh well worth the end result.

It seriously is but all is worth it in the end as you said :P

Anyways... here is some progress I was able to do today!

The most important one I had today!

NEW HIGH SCORE ON FLAPPY BIRD. UNH YE

http://s16.postimg.org/urfmhetkl/9_WDOBv9.png

Anywho to some Gunpla Stuff I guess...

Today I got a fairly big bottle of Lacquer Thinner (To clean the Airbrush, oh man 15-20 Second Cleaning without the need to go to the Bathroom? yes plz.) & a bottle of Pledge Floor Shine!

Did some Pre-Shading on everythang btw and went ahead to paint it.

http://s16.postimg.org/jgcyt1mph/HYpz7zd.jpg

Also today I found out I bought the wrong set of Vallejo Paints... I got the ones that are meant for Hand Brushing and become solid when sprayed. Oh god the horrors I faced.

But here is how it came out anyway.

Really love the reflection on the eyes. Are you using two tones of white for the white armor? The back of the head is much whiter than the front, seems a bit off.

They certainly do look like the foil stickers that come with the kit, if they're not. Then you need to be sharing your secrete. haha.

I also see what Squee is talking about. The picture of the right side of the head is where you can easily see that the front part of the head looks more "dirty".

Thanks, and yea I am using two shades of white, I think it'll give a better perspective when under proper light, the difference isn't actually that much but that stupid desk light and the lack of natural lighting in the living room kinda kills it lol.

Alright I actually didn't use the Foil Sticker and instead used Dura-Lar Film. It is ridiculously reflective and it was only $3 at Hobby Lobby. Under proper lighting it really stands out and looking into the eyes itself you can even see your reflection.

http://s24.postimg.org/yn91xhylx/Ym_HBLHN.jpg

And as far as the two shades of white I did it on purpose to give the front more of a highlight, and to direct your eyes to it. Like I said before the difference isn't really that much but poor lighting tends to show that :X

Hopefully I can grab some Tamiya Red & Chesto Colours to finish up the chest and hopefully wrap up the whole kit. The wings themselves are a task to tackle and I'm barely started on them lol.

It was already such a pain to do this for the eyes, like seriously. I'm going to be using the film to put Gold on the Dragoons aswell. (I see it looking good in my head and it came out perfect for the eyes.)

That's clever, and definitely a very smart move. Did you have to cut the tiny eyes out?

Hehe, walking around Hobby Lobby for "Project Freedom" things was definitely fun, having no fancy detail up stuff I have to come up with makeshifts and so far, it's been working pretty well.

And yes, oh my god was that a pain in the ass.

Bossguy

Very interesting about that masking product. I might give that a try myself one of these days. The legs are looking great indeed, though I find the pre-shading a bit all over the place. I'm used to seeing the shaded areas more along the edges of the parts with the center areas more or less solid on the actual color. Seeing it as you have it now gives it more of a cloudy and/or weathered effect.

Ya, I felt this way too :|

I'm thinking it might be because of the white being too over-thinned or me going trigger happy with the Black :|

Depending on how it looks when I finish the Skirt, I might just redo it. Though I've come to realized that White is the worst color to paint with (Atleast for me).

Hopefully it'll come together nicely lol.

Quite impressive how it turn out, although I'm agree with Dlinker and Thwalker, the upper torso look a bit cleaner than the lower one. But I wouldn't worry too much about that. Very nice, and I like the two-tone whites. I didn't know how well they would work initially, but seeing the whole thing so far shows that it looks good. I'm still a bit unsure about the pre-shading any the parts from the hips down, though. Looks splotchy when you compare it to the upper torso.

The Strike Freedom is looking awesome man. The gold really stands out well and the paint job looks great. I can see what Dlinker is talking about. The pre-shading on the lower half a bit more blotchy than the upper half. But overall the kit is looking amazing. I can't wait to see the wings.

Quite impressive how it turn out, although I'm agree with Dlinker and Thwalker, the upper torso look a bit cleaner than the lower one. But I wouldn't worry too much about that. Good looking kit you got there, I really love how the gold frame stand out from the rest, that's how a Strike Freedom should be.
Are you planning to add some decals to the kit? It surely live-up the kit, but of course, it's my personal taste.

Uggh I see it more now, the Upper Torso or rather the upper half of the shoulder is too clean!

I'm probably gonna rework both shoulders :|

Have you guys any tips on removing Acrylic Paint?

Also Skulb I am gonna be putting some waterslides on it, I have PG Style Waterslides but downscaled to MG. To give it a better and more outstanding look.

You can try Denatured Alcohol for stripping it. Another option is Windex, though I think that only works with Vallejo and Tamiya Acrylics.

70% or higher isopropyl alcohol should work too.

Power Purple will strip acrylic paint off in minutes. I left an empty Tamiya jar in my vat for about 2 hours, when I took it out, she was spotless.

Thanks ya'll, I just went ahead and got some Brake Fluid.

Put both Shoulder Tops on there and shaked it for about 3 minutes. Took it right off real nice. I then re-primered them and going to be painting them tomorrow/Saturday :D

Works like a damn charm.

Who want's some Funnel Sticks?

I managed to get 4/8 Wings done so hopefully even done with painting the kit by the week and hopefully getting a proper topcoat to get them ready for some Waterslides x.x;

That'll take so damn long since I opted to get PG Style Waterslides for this MG lol...

Oh man, you'll be doing waterslides all through Spring in that case. But even though it'll take forever, they sure will look good.

Man, I need to buy some brake fluid too. Might be useful in cleaning out nozzles for airbrushes.

Suggestion on the gold parts especially the fingers and other joints give it a wash either dark reddish brown or black it will make the details and color pop more. you could also go with mixing either or both of those colors with gun metal and or tin.

I just saw the PG waterslide, the amount of it... And downsize it for MG. It gonna take me ages to apply it. But it worth.
Does that break fluid only work for acrylic paint? Or also on laquer?

Yea, that in itself will take me some time... On a side note though is I'm almost done with the MS so almost kind of there.

To be honest I've been using Lacquer Thinner and that has been working in terms of cleaning up the AB (Gargling it Thinner takes me about 20-30 Seconds to clean it up for a new color and to clean up for wrap-up). Haven't had the need to use Brake Fluid for this purpose.

I was intending to do this but still unsure wether I'll be pulling through on the Gold but I just might, specially for the fingers.

Anyways I didn't have much time to work on the Wings for this week but to be honest I'll be done with the MS by Friday (Given that the weather isn't complete ass). Meaning I'll be able to move into the tedious tedious task of Decals :|

Anyways here's some work that I got done for the past 2 days or so.

Got the wings Primered & Painted. So it looks pretty good I think

Pretty much it lol. Some progress made .

The wings we're painted Model Masters Gunmetal but you might not even be able to tell the difference :( (or you might, hopefully).

Oh and by the way I took some of ya'lls advice and just stripped down the Shoulder (Top Part) to get it matching the whole kit.

Also here is the wife's Beargguy she did for her very 1st kit (About 2 months ago), wanted to play with it and also testing out and working with lighting.

We both laughed at this coming one because it literally screams.

I'm going to kill you.

Anyways till next time.

Ciao~

I can see a slight difference with the wings and I think it's a good color. I kinda like how the gold on the wings looks slightly grungier than the frame, too. That last pic of the Bearguy does look kinda creepy. If someone photoshops red eyes on it, then it's full-on creepy.

Regarding the brake fluid, I noticed even lacquer thinner isn't enough to clean out an airbrush nozzle all the way. I used to use Windex to clean out Tamiya acrylic (my current paint of choice), but I switched out to lacquer thinner and it's working much better. However, when I check the insides of the nozzle, I can still see some traces of paint inside, hence why brake fluid might be a stronger option especially if it cleans it in minutes rather than days. By days, I'm referring to my current option of dipping the nozzle in Simple Green, haha.

The wings are looking fantastic. Though I must admit, I thought you had painted the wings an off black. From the pics it doesn't really look like gunmetal. That being said, it looks like you made a great choice. As it matches the overall scheme of the Strike Freedom perfectly.

Wow either you are a phenomenal guesser or you have some blessed eyes. The Gold in the wings is actually different indeed and same with how the Gunmetal looks in terms of the Original Wings. I'll probably build the unprimered wings up and put them on as a side by side comparison but very nice!

Ya it might be difficult since I went with a color that doesn't have a drastic difference :|

Good thing I still have the unpainted/unprimered available so I'll show you a comparison of both :D

And you would be right actually.

Gunmetal + Some Black created that color. It has the "shimmer" that Gunmetal has when you look up close but there is actually some black in there. I'm glad you think so btw :D

The wings look great on the kit. Interesting choice, using a different shade of gold on that part. A very subtle difference.

If you think about it, the different shade of gold makes sense. The Dragoons detach from the wings. So that motion plus the thrusters from the Dragoons would char the framework. So you could call it weathering.

Also, good to know that my color pallet can still spot things like that.
