AKA- No wonder nothing is finished. I have so many ongoing projects that making a WIP thread for all of them would be just plain silly so I'll pile everything up here as a way to keep it simple. I'll have to split this in to multiple posts though, as the maximum number of images I can link is 4.

Firstly, the HG Astraea kitbash I've been tooling around with for awhile now. At first I wanted to see just how many swords I could load on to it while maintaining some for of functionality, but decided to revise it last week:

http://i55.tinypic.com/2co0nyv.jpg

I still need to paint the GN condensers (going with a metallic orange) and do some general touching up, as well as work the 00's GN drives in there again.

Further WiPs on these will definitely go up here, but you can also see stuff go up on my blog (linked below).

Next up is the MG ReZEL for the GAF ReZEL group build. I've been working on this for a long time and it's been in the final stages for even longer, it's just my own laziness and the fact that working with snake chain to replace the piping on the back of the legs is a total PITA.

Getting in to the heavier stuff now with the PG Wing Zero Custom. As you can see, it's an experiment with LEDs more than anything else, though I'll be closing up the nasty seamlines on the kit and trying to find a way to make the wings stay put when I pose them flared out. I've already got the colorscheme for this thought up, I'm just waiting til I finish my other PG project before I get in to this one.

Which of course brings us to the big one, the PG Strike Freedom 'Pride' for Gundam Australia's group build project. This thing is time consuming as all-get-out what with chroming the frame of everything and using the candy method for painting (black base->alclad ii chrome->clear blue) and has had more than it's fair share of issues while building like lost parts and having to sand down and repaint things but thusfar it's turning out to be well worth the struggle.

I've seen this on Syd's blog...blown away! I have a PGSF that I've barely started and have toyed with the idea of joining the "Gauntlet", but I little to no experience in customizing kits and don't want to screw up my only PG.

If it's just painting it and it not coming out smoothly you're worried about, a little windex soak+600 grit sandpaper+1200 grit wetsand will remove paint easy peasy and leave the part smooth like new for a second (or in the case of my wings, 4th or 5th) go around. It's definitely a big undertaking though, I've been working on it for ages thanks in part to Ohio weather.

Well, thanks for the technique advice, that gives me some peace of mind. The other problem I'm having is deciding on what to paint it, if I do it. Will I be happy with a totally different color scheme? Is it worth entering if I DON'T change it? What colors will I do? These are the questions I face and I need to decide soon...ok, enough of that.

I just noticed the bits of metallic green in the frame of the PGSF, neat-o choice there. Kind of risky to put that in, but it works well.

Good eye, the color scheme on the ReZEL and Strike Freedom where both Hi-Nu inspired (hence the metallic green on SF for psychoframe).

Well, one of the guidelines for the GB is changing some colors (even if it's just changing the red parts on the shoulder armor), but with all the lineart out there you could use ms paint or photoshop to play around until you came up with a good plan of attack. That's usually how I start on my recolor projects. Be warned, painting this thing takes forever and a day. Lots of parts and lots of paint! I'm glad I got an airbrush when I did, otherwise I'd be spending a ton in spraycans.

Good question really, It's hard to say. Whenever I do sit down to work on painting it's usually at least 3-4 hours so I'd wager somewhere in the ballpark of 20-30 something spent painting? Painting PG kits are a whole hell of a lot of work when you've got 3 layers of paint to put on everything, ugh. When I get back to working on HG kits my mind is going to be blown at how little paint I wind up using.

If only that was what the Strike Freedom would have looked like in Destiny. Is there any way that you have ever physically met Asterisk? Because if you have, I'm having him drive straight to you so I can see that thing in person. I will hold him at gunpoint. OK so it won't be loaded but it isn't like he'll know that.

How close is that Strike Freedom to being done? Just DRAGOONS left? It's really hard to think it's not even completed and it's probably the sweetest PG I've ever seen... And Strike Freedom isn't even one of my favorites. lol

85-90%, maybe? I have to put the clear blue over the wings on the right side and paint white on the DRAGOONS, add the blue to the top halves of the rifles and then clearcoat it.

I'm planning on having my PG WZC be striking in a different way(all those glorious LEDs).

Been snapping kits lately just trying to get them built so I can have this massive backlog out of my closet/ first up-

http://i55.tinypic.com/1y7fo5.jpg

Finished snapping my Blade Liger Mirage kit. There's a lot of detailing and painting to be done when I have time, but for now this works.

Gievn that this is kit 3 in the HMM line (just a special painted version) it doesn't shock me very much that the fitment of some parts was off and over the kit is kind of fragile and a total PITA to move around or pose. it'll probably be left in this position until I have time to get serious about this thing. I've started the Liger Zero kit (release number 22) and it feels a lot more solid than this does so we'll see what happens.

http://i54.tinypic.com/11rg701.jpg

Also finished snapping my MG Red Frame, Planning on giving this an orange/white colorscheme after I finish up PG SF.

http://i56.tinypic.com/wh16aw.jpg

And MG Wing Gundam. I've got a C1 vibe in mind for this.

it's an awesome kit. Sturdy frame, looks great (and the colors are spot on) OOB and it's plenty stable. The hand holding the rifle is a bit hokey but it still works out okay in the end. It's not very expensive either so I totally recommend it.

While I don't have the EBM version of destiny, I do have the 30th anniversary. It's a great kit and while we don't have a review up, I did do WIP videos and and here's the one of completion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK72H3w5laA&feature=channel_video_title

EBM is massively back heavy and some can be kind of "floppy"; but I love those beam effect parts (esp. the palm cannon one). Wing Zero Custom is *meh*. Wing Gundam is a truly fun kit kit to build, looks great right out of the box, and has some really nifty engineering in the wings. It does have those hands, though. Aile Strike is a superb kit as well: great details, better than anime looks, solid, and well-articulated.

I say, for the money, Wing is the best choice, followed closely by Aile Strike. That's coming from someone who (as previosly mentioned) is the biggest Wing fan.

I'm with you. Some things are just inborn traits, not skills to be developed. I'm not saying one can't learn to paint, but it definitely comes more naturally to some people. I'm not "made" to paint fine details with a little paintbrush; but give me a chainsaw or the controls to a piece of heavy equipment and I'll make it dance and sing. Doesn't stop me from trying (grr! I hate you HGUC Angelo's Geara Zulu and your miniscule details!).

It's very inconvenient and there are a few other parts that got chipped as well when I was putting things together so I'm going to have to take it apart and come up with a better plan of attack for the red sections. It's not my number one priority right now though.

PG Wing Zero Custom, I've got most of the parts on the skewers. Nothing fancy though, just a simple paintjob to bring out the LED work...but I do have something cool planned out for the future, I need to get better at some other things first though.

I've consistently having problems with white paint through my airbrush (spiderwebbing, clogging, ect) even though I mix the paint like I do any other. Luckily, after getting really annoyed the solution revealed itself: crank the PSI way the hell up. I'll have to dial it back down when I go to paint something that isn't white, but for now I'm just glad that I can get the rest of the white down for this without incident. Most of this is just test fitting, as the white on the front skirts, upper arms and feet have not been painted. I'm also planning on adding some black to the side skirts, a-la wing ver. ka.

Here you can see how much of a mess my wiring work is right now- it's all just sort of hanging around. When I actually finish the kit I'll be gluing some pla-plate over where the blu-tac is to keep the light from shining out of the arms. A little yellow paint on top of it should keep it nice and locked in.

It's the PG, I've had it since 2009 but haven't had the drive to work on it til now. Riding the wave from PG SF, we'll see how long it lasts especially with school and whatnot starting up and still working ~30 hours a week. I'll still try to make updates now and then though, and this thing still has more LEDs coming to it once I figure out the groundwork for it.

back to work on the olí perfect grade wing zero custom. iím still a ways from done, but you can see how itís gonna look for the most part.

The buster rifle is still nowhere NEAR done, I have things testfitted so I can make sure the LEDs all work in the barrel and scopes but the inside is hacked to shit so I have no choice but to use the olí seam elimination method (superglue+clamps+wetsand+paint) to even make sure the thing will stay together once I put it together for keeps. I still have to separate the wires as well and install a switch in each half of the rifle so I can pose it holding them in each hand.

The wiring in the back is still a hot mess as well but itís all wired up and works just like it should. The hard choice I still have ahead of me is do I wire up the wings to the same switch or find a way to run them to a second one? Running them all to one will save space, but will probably destroy the battery life since I plan on having about 14 LEDs in the wings alone. This of course raises the question as to where will I put a second switch, but Iím a creative guy so I think I can figure it out.

The only other part I have a concern about is the rubber red part for the chest. If I paint it white, how am I gonna get everything together without dicking the paint up? Maybe I can just put it on and then paint it since the area around it will be white anyway or something.

I'd hardly call post-mid-0079 Amuro a whiny spammer :P.

I would. It's just that those aspects are nowhere near as extreme as they are in Captain McBeamspam. He does do some beam spamming (courtesy of the fin funnels) in CCA, from what I recall. As for the whininess post-0079, please. *imitates Amuro* Wah, the Feddies have me under house arrest! Wah, I want the Gundam Mk. II! Wah, you're acting like you did in Zeta, Char! Wah, why won't you be a Feddies lapdog like me, Char? Wah, you used Quess! *stops imitating Amuro*

Simplistic mockery aside, all Amuro does half the time is whine. The only difference between early 0079 Amuro and post 0079 Amuro is that, in the early days, Amuro is a self-interested, antisocial whiner, while in the later years he's grown to be much more considerate of other people, while still being a self-righteous whiner. Kira follows the same path for the most part (although he's never really antisocial, just antiwar). What makes Kira more annoying is the fact that the whininess and beamspamming are taken to ridiculous extremes, while occurring more often. But make no mistake, Fukuda used Amuro as the prototype/foundation/basis for Kira.

For the record, I don't loathe Amuro, the way I loathe Kira. I just recognized the personality traits common to both characters, and I used them as the basis for making a joke. Again, nice job on the Strike Freedom (I'm reserving judgement on your custom WZC, until it's been completed).

I've heard that alclad's "transparent purple" will yield a darker color, while if you go the only hotmetal route you can give the part a less thorough coating to make parts lighter.

PG Wing Zero Custom has been in limbo for a bit now.

This is due to money, as things go sometimes. 30$ for LEDs for the wings alone, and I need more paint to match it (this is the last project I use Mr.Color paints on, more on that when I have money to dump in to refreshing my supplies) which adds more to it…plus I need to order 4 more microswitches for the rifle halves+wings. Luckily those are only 1.50USD each. At least all the time spent not working on it has led to me having a maybe perfect plan of attack for how I’m going to handle the wings!

honk bonk bonk cross post from blag and GAF:

I've been working on this behemoth lately, just made a nice big post at my blog detailing what I've done so far so for the time being I'm going to cross-post the last bit of it here just to save myself some time:

http://i43.tinypic.com/21417om.jpg

These are primed now, this was the last picture I took of them beforehand though. These alone took a good few days to finish because I'm being so picky about the seam lines. One of the Bazookas still has a seam line on top of it, but I'll have to either putty it or just let it go because I've almost hit the exhaustion point as far as sand, prime, sand, prime, sand prime goes for these things.

http://i44.tinypic.com/etwak8.jpg

With the weapons mostly taken care of for the time being (because pacing is key and I don't want to burn myself out), I started to work on various parts of the actual mobile suit. The head was easy enough to put an LED in and keep the transformation just fine which was totally expected thanks to the ample amount of room it has in it. The light *bleeding problem will be taken care of when I paint everything and if that doesn't do it, I'll switch to a battery with a little less juice.

http://i42.tinypic.com/34rj67k.jpg

The legs require a little more creative thinking, something I'm sure the rest of this little project will too. A big part of figuring out how to do this is going to be deciding what parts of the frame are superfluous and cutting them down to make sure the parts can slide around the LED without the wires or anything getting in the way. Here you can see that I carved out a small square of space for the 1.8mm LED to fit (purchased from the ever-reliable modeltrainsoftware (http://www.modeltrainsoftware.com/bl-214f.html)). At first that was all I did, but the wires from the LED kept the armor from closing all the way so I had to cut away more of the frame's part so the wires could move to the inside and not screw the armor's movement up. The thighs will also have to use two LEDs, one for the front and one for the back, since one LED can't shine bright enough to light the entire area up.

http://i43.tinypic.com/2k26af.jpg

Again, you can see the light bleeding though the white plastic but it still looks pretty decent as is. The hardest part will be coming up next (the knee) but as I look at it I think I've already got a pretty good idea as to how I'm going to handle it. It'll involve a lot of cutting of both the LED and the wires but you do what you have to do. I'd like to have everything running to one central battery but that may be a bit too much to hope for. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Wiltonican
March 8, 2012, 5:56 PM
That's awesome, Lupes!

You can hide the light bleeding through plastic by gluing some tin foil in between. Maybe that'll work?

Thanks for the modeltrainsoftware link! I was totally looking for some flashing LEDs in small scale. And they have them all pre-wired as well. Double awesome.

Yellow paint is really good at stopping the light from bleeding through though I plan on painting the parts a dark blue kind of color for my preshading, so I suspect that will do an excellent job absorbing the excess light. I tried to use tin foil on my PG Wing Zero to aide in the light going down the barrel but it doesn't work as well as you'd think, especially if it doesn't lay perfectly flat. Plus you can get issues like the foil tear, becoming crinkled or otherwise moving out of place. For something that doesn't have a lot of moving areas around it it might not be a bad option though.

I see your point with the foil tearing. There is always that chance. And it would be a pain to go back in and fix.

Yellow paint?!? That's interesting. Never tried that before. How does that work? Does yellow have more pigment that would block out light better than other colors? (Does it have metallic flake in it as well?) If this is your theory, then wouldn't red be a better choice?

More work done. While the knee doesn’t close all the way is as, I plan on sanding down the LED’s bulb some once it goes in to final assembly to ensure that it closes properly since it’s the peg where the B2 and B4 parts come together cause the Knee to not slide back the rest of the way. To facilitate keeping the transformation intact for this area I sanded down the back edge of the green areas (the red line) and the top of the K22 part (yellow line). I also sanded away a fair amount of space on the inside of the B2 and B4 parts to make sure that sliding the part up and down didn’t damage the wires. The wire will be run up through the frame and joined with the wires from the thigh LEDs. From there they’ll go up the back of the back of the model (wires hidden by the rear skirts) and joined with the other wires in the center of the chest. For now I plan on making it so there are only two wires+batteries inside the cockpit, so I’ll have to merge everything elsewhere on the kit, hopefully in the space that opens up just above the Unicorn’s waist when in destroy mode.

okay so about about making this chest part light up

http://i40.tinypic.com/35jf60w.jpg

Starting with A13, here's where I carved out space to make room for the cockpit LEDs. While I originally intended for one to do the job it turns out that doing it that way doesn't give a nice even glow around the cockpit so I had to put one in on the right side of it as well. The first picture is before I cut out the second one so you can see it in comparison to the unmodified side.

http://i41.tinypic.com/24e24wx.jpg

The completed cockpit part has enough room for two of the 1.8mm LEDs and their wires without getting in the way of the seat or other armor parts. The wires are thin enough that you can just run them around the back (where the grey M3 part attaches) and get no interference.

http://i39.tinypic.com/6r29nl.jpg

I thought that I'd just be able to stick the LEDs in to the space on the I13 part but things didn't play out that way, as usual. With the LEDs there without modifying the parts the A20/A21 parts don't fit correctly so something had to be done.

http://i41.tinypic.com/34y35za.jpg

Luckily everything that was cut away here was completely and totally superfluous so in the end there wasn't anything notable touched. The LEDs and A20/A21 parts now mesh wonderfully.

i can only link 4 images at max soooo

For the wires to go anywhere though, the I14 and I15 parts had to have a little plastic cut off. This part was fairly simple to do even though getting the knife in there was a pain in the ass until I got some of the plastic cut away.

If you can see the other LED set back there, it's for the LEDs that will go higher up on the chest so the rest of it will light up. Additionally there will be two more LEDs that go in the lower section of the torso so the M2 part has proper lighting but as far as I can tell putting the LEDs there will require no extra work.

(for the record yes i am lazy bastard and cross post everything)

Instead of using a knife, have you tried simply using side cutters to take out those chunks of plastic? i have yet to build any of my 3 Unicorn MG's so I'm not sure if these parts are just too small for that :-P.

In regards to using sidecutters, I'm worried about how precise they'd be or if the stress from chopping bits out would damage other areas that are on the important side of things.

I can see that sort of thing happening on clear plastic because it tends to be brittle. It would just crack and splinter. But the ABS plastic of the inner frame should be able to handle it. I can certainly understand wanting to be safe rather than sorry and create MORE work that what you are already dedicating yourself to.

2: how did you get the ReZel backpack on again?

lupes
May 31, 2012, 10:32 PM
Yeah, White Unicorn was definitely the inspiration for this. I wanted to do something that from what I could tell, no one else had done with the RG.

I used Tamiya extra thing cement to attach the boosters to the RX_78-2's backpack, using the beam saber mounts as a point of reference. One is actually sitting a little bit higher than the other because I had some issues getting them to sit still while the glue dried, but it's very minute.

The wiring in the wings is still underway. Now that I’m certain everything is functioning as it should, it’s time to solder everything in place and situate the wires so they’re properly hidden from view like everything else. I managed to set it up so that the wings have their own switches making it so I can turn them off while leaving the green LEDs on. This was done but running the red and black wires to the switch on the wing spine, then running those wires down through the wing frame to the main battery compartment on the back. Of course this means the wings green LEDs will always be on if the wings are but frankly this was a much easier way of going about it than trying to find/create battery space on the wings themselves for each wing. Function first for me.

On to the rifles. They’ll be quick and easy once I get going on them.

Put the red rubber part on, mask off what you don't want to get paint on and then paint it. It's the only way to get that part painted without running the risk of ruining things, I think.

They all run off of one switch, I didn't wire it as cleverly as I'd originally thought. The wires from the wings run out from where the wing connects to the backpack and down in to the battery compartment, while the arms and everything else run up through the inside of the frame of the kit.

In awe of your work, I'm just starting out and your painting is a huge inspiration.

One more question... On my Astray RF I want to get a metallic gun metal finish (a smoked chrome) on the frame and then Matt black for the armor with titanium or chrome highlights (vents, rivets, etc). How would I get the metallic grey finish? I love the finish you get with the black + chrome + clear color, but as far as I know there isn't a clear gray or clear black. Could I just use a really thinned out gloss black over the chrome? Like a wash?

lupes
July 4, 2012, 6:04 PM
I actually haven't worked on it at all, I've been busy with commissions and PG work. Just goes to show you how easily I get sidetracked, huh? But I do have a PG and MG Red Frame to work on that I'd like to get to and I think it's safe to say once Strike Freedom, Strike, and Wing Zero Custom are finished I'll get to the PG Red Frame. I've had ideas for it and the MG for a long time now and it's a pretty easy job. I'll get to it eventually.

My tumblr is thesuperluper.tumblr.com.

As for a metallic grey finish, you can use colors like gunmetal for an easy fix, Tamiya makes a nice gunmetal spray and if you're using an airbrush Mr Hobby has Mr. Color Metal colors that'd give you a nice metallic grey. They do make a clear black called 'smoke' in the Mr. Hobby end of things but I'm not sure if any other lines carry that color.

Thanks Man, I checked it out and Tamiya do a 'smoke' enamel as well, I didn't realise - but I like your advice about just starting out with a metallic grey or gunmetal. I was going to order some of the Alclad II chrome to have a go with that so maybe I'll get a bottle of the Alclad Gunmetal at the same time.

How do you find the Alclad? Is it tough to get the smooth mirror? Does it need thinning or you just use it straight out of the bottle?

I guess I should move these questions to the painting section, sorry.

lupes
July 5, 2012, 4:54 PM
I buy my paints through sprue brothers when I'm not getting a kit with it, otherwise I use hobbywave. Hobbywave doesn't have alclad II though so if you're looking for that specifically I recommend sprue brothers.

If you're going to get in to alclad paints, I also suggest getting alclad's airbrush cleaner since it's seriously heavy duty stuff and cleans the hell out of airbrushes no matter what you're spraying through there. If you do decide to get chrome or other alclad colors be sure to check what you need for a base coat first. In chrome's case you need a black base (again, I suggest the alclad II black base since it's 4oz for 4-5$ and you'll be using a lot of it). The black takes a long time to dry completely though so be sure to give it at least a day and a half to dry proper before you spray the chrome on there and then give the chrome a solid day or so to dry as well before spraying anything over it. Be really careful not to overspray either because you'll wind up with an uneven finish on the chrome if you do or ugly marring if you overspray on the clear color.

When spraying the clear color I usually thin the paint to about a 35/65 ration of paint/thinner just to reduce the chance that the chrome will get messed up by the thinner. You might have to turn the psi up a little bit to make it work better but I prefer better safe than sorry.

Also, don't worry about asking anything in this thread especially if you're asking me specifically since I'll be much more likely to see it if you post it here.

Good tip about Sprue Brothers and Hobbywave.

I live in Dubai and there's no scale model shops here – nowhere to buy the models and nowhere to get the paint – so it gets REALLY expensive to keep buying from eBay and online stores and have it shipped over here. I've been buying my models from Gundam Planet in NY and getting them sent here via a freight forwarding service. I get my paints from eBay shops in Taiwan which seems to be working out OK for me. They're around $5 for a Tamiya enamel (incl. shipping). I sometimes have difficulties with the freight forwarder refusing to deliver certain paint types 'cos they're flammable, etc. but so far I think I've been pretty lucky. I'm hoping the Alclad II paints won't get stopped.

Today I'm excited because my first HG kit should be at the post office tomorrow - the Zaku 1 Sniper Yonem Kirks! I love the sniper kits! That's going to be my next kit to paint.
