Introduction and Expectations
This project is gonna be huge. So huge it needs it's own thread. What... in the world have I gotten myself into. From what I have seen of this kit online, it's is a gargantuan behemoth that will demand all of my skills I have developed over the course of 10 years. I make it sound bad, but I have heard PG's aren't anything complicated. This is 1/60. The scale is large, and each section needs it's own build order. Feet, Legs, Lower Waist, Chest, Arms, Head, Backpack, and Weapons. This monster will take up valuable time, resources and money to complete, but will be one of my greatest personal triumphs to date. I have not yet built a perfect grade.

From all of the actuators, hydraulics, wires and detail I have seen, this is an engineer's wet dream. I happen to be one (an engineer, not a... you know...) as well as a model builder. There is ZERO WAY I am leaving this inner frame untouched. My intent is to build the kit, and I hope for it's old age it has some decent posing options. If I can, I want to light up the eyes and the cockpit. I want to at least get #1.

What I Paid
I paid 16,000 yen for this kit with shipping to get it out of Japan. It should arrive within a week. I should probably head out tomorrow and get the paint necessary for this behemoth. I expect this monster to take on the order of 125 hours to complete. I can finish a MG in about 35-40 hours.

What are you going to do with it?
Everything. No battle damage. Debating on weathering. Decals yes.

Paints

2x Silver
2x Metalizer
1x Gunmetal
1x Bronze
1x Gold

Will you update us on the build progress?
Every step of the way will be an interactive experience. I have a brand new camcorder I intend to use. If you folks want to come along for the journey, sub this thread. I'll update it when I have content to share regarding the project.

Sweet! This is the only PG i still want anymore! Also, the eyes and cockpit have an led system in them already, so your goal should be easily achieved.

Very interesting, and refreshing, choice here. I read that the articulation is up there with the MG 2.0 version so you should be okay in that regard.

1500 bucks?
may I ask you to clarify to me what you intend to spend that much money on?

Excellent choice.
This would probably be my (eventual) first Perfect Grade. However, if you're painting the armor a completely different color, wouldn't it have been easier to paint if you started with the A.E.U.G kit? Since it's white, I mean.

This is the value I put on the item after the estimated work that needs to be done to it. I spent 16,000 yen on the kit. Wish I had that money D! :D For insurance purposes the value of the kit would be a lot less. Insurance would not pay for the time spent to construct the kit, but rather for the materials.

wouldn't it have been easier to paint if you started with the A.E.U.G kit?

That's a fair point. The gray will knock out the underlying color anyways; but it's easier when the underlying color is white. Ah well.

I would like to light up the cockpit as well and paint the pilot, but we'll see how the inner frame looks before I attempt to play with batteries, wires and LED. Thankfully I have experience with electrical circuits.

The kit in question was pushed back a day for shipping- it's coming from Japan so I'm not going to complain. Those RGs should arrive soon- and I have Sandrock to work on. Those projects will halt once the PG gets in.

I read that the articulation is up there with the MG 2.0 version

Good. I paid a lot for this kit, and despite its age- I expect articulation for a perfect grade.

Awesome man. I have yet ventured forth into the realm of PG. But I really want to. I'll be watching this build. Are you going to paint it in authentic colors, or custom colors?

Jfl0
April 4, 2013, 5:37 PM
I am staying with the original colors. I may do a camou pattern on the shield. Digital camo. I'd like to give it a try.

That would look really cool. How do you even go about doing that?

I am filled with invy, This is to be my first perfect grade as well. Just not ready to build one yet.

How do you even go about doing that?

It involves a lot of masking, that I know. I have to look it up so I can attempt to do it.

I don't think you got what i mean, i'm saying, the kit comes with all of that already. lol The most you'll have to do for your plan is paint the pilot. XD It actually uses a psuedo fiber optic set up to light the cockpit.

As for digi camo, depending on the scale/size you want them you can actually pick up sheets of precut decals. Since you ordered the MK II from hlj, you MIGHT be able to add a set to your order. Or you could just freehand the masking by cutting yourself, it's pretty easy.

I did :p I'm glad you said something about the head light gimmick but you didn't mention the cockpit. I may play around with a LED and small wiring to get it to the cockpit. We'll see when I can see what I can do to make it fit.

I watched your next video, and you said you wont use the extra worker/mechanic figures. Any idea if you want to sell them?

Perfect Grade parts have definitely been an interesting experience versus master grades. The parts are larger, there is more detail on them and opportunities to paint. They are slightly more complex, but nothing I can't handle. Because I am working on a 2002 release perfect grade there is some stuff that will need seam filling, but the parts are very tight fitting and not much putty will be required to fix these minor issues.

I'll take pictures next time I am downstairs.

Um. Ballpark... off the top of my head, zoh my gawd don't quote me during a zombie apocalypse... 30? It's attached without a screw and that's probably how I'll leave it unless it wants to play games. I'm not terribly concerned about the screws or the # of them- I just want the articulation.

I haven't seen any of that yet. If I do, I'll make sure to fill it 'good'. :p

I took Wing Zero Custom to the hobby store with me today and it was an eye catcher. Some kid ran in the back and wanted a model kit because of it. No gundam back there, sorry little dude :/

I got paint for this PG though. $33 for paint. Not terribly bad, considering the kit. I went with Blue Angel Blue for the armor. It may need darkening, which won't be an issue.

Yea getting rid of them really adds to the overall look. Alot of people skip it cause you can get away with hiding it under a coat of flat/matte, but you'll still see it from different angles lol

I'm thinking this will hide OK with a bit of sanding. If that doesn't rectify the situation I'll fill them. I worked on the chest this morning and got the vents in. Pain in the rear, but once I got them in they stay. I'll have to number them like I did the wing zero's feathers because individual pieces fit in particular spots. I also assembled the head unit without armor. I stuck the leads to the eye LED to a AA battery and got no juice. Concerned, I read the manual and it indicated the kit needs to LR43 batteries. In laymen's terms, I was giving the circuit 1.5 volts instead of 3.0 volts. I could probably run wires down through the feet and use AA's instead, but I like the compactness of LR43's. They are also cheap as b***s. I will probably go out and buy a red LED for the eyes. Blue would be kinda cool, too. I know that's breaking the tradition of original colors/parts, but oh well :D

Breaking tradition is part of the game man. The eyes of the Red Frame are green. Mine are red. Tradition broken. lol But I've seen a painted build of the PG Mk.II and they used red LEDs for the eyes. Looked totally awesome.

Some things that are going on in real life right now may force me to put building on a hiatus around June 2013. I may be moving out of my current state back to my old one- for a variety of reasons.

It's about time I get out of the house anyways, and the current laws in Illinois state that I am not allowed to protect myself against gang bangers, thugs, robbers etc.

The state I want to move back to- Pennsylvania enjoys constitutional liberties. I also have friends back there and family immediately to the south in Maryland. There are many more beefs I have with the state of Illinois, combined with the fact that I know no one here. I've been friendless for about 2 years now. Well- not technically, but I have no contacts here in Illinois. I feel like a foreigner.

I'll keep working up until then- and I will let folks know when I go on hiatus.

Oh I am allowed that right, and only because of a 2008 court decision. I am not allowed to protect myself outside of the home because our state government is corrupt (it jockeys for #1 and #2 most corrupt state in the United States with Louisiana)

Omfg you poor sod. You have it worse than I do. S.649 did get taken down. I had objections to it after reading it, but I won't get into specifics. I decided to oppose it on my own and not by just what the NRA said. Lot of people think gun rights folks are nuts and just believe the NRA like a cult.

That's one of the reasons I'm always going back to this thread when there's a new post :) I'd love to see an acrylic metallic that can closely match the appearance of the enamel and lacquer kinds. I've used Tamiya and Vallejo so far and while they're very easy to work with, the metal flakes are often too big to give that real metallic look. They work well for creating a dirty, worn metallic sheen though.

I think your videos are great to watch. Fast forwarding the more tedious stuff, but slowing down for the more noteworthy aspects is a good move and it never feels like a chore to watch. The only complaint I have is the yellow lighting. Kinda distorts some of the colors.

RED RED go with the red.

As cool as he would be with ice blue eyes, I have to go with the red. Evil suit! evil! :D It's coming together nicely. One of the arms is complete, one of the legs is now complete, one of the feet is now complete, and now to do the other side plus the backpack and weapons.

I'm going to start jotting down my thoughts in my write up. I already have some beefs with this kit, but the sheer awesomeness of the detail is enough for me. You can do some posing with this guy- it's just the nitpicks I am going after. I can see how PGs were a test bed for new ideas, and I remind myself constantly that this kit was released in 2002. 11 years ago. It's still very impressive for its year.

More pics and WIP videos to come. I'm processing one now and have another in the pipeline. Assembly will definitely be done by this time next week- I'd give it five more days. If I boogie? sooner. Some days I do actually spend 3-4 hours building this kit. The average is 1.48 hours per day in the register. So far I've spent 11 hours assembling this kit. Some folks take more, some take less- but HLJ cites the build time around 12 hours.

There will be a video review of the unpainted kit (no decals) and there will be videos of the painting process, if I can manage to do it with the transition over to my new home at the beginning of June. There will also be a part for plug and play options plus articulation. There is no action base option for this kit. One would have to be created, and I'd rather create a sturdy saddle rather than drill up into him. The leg core is made of solid metal- there's no way I can drill into that with my tools.

I am doing custom work to the circuitry in this kit. I am adding a second switch so that I can cut power to the cockpit when I don't want to show it off. The two LEDs will be wired in parallel. This means they suck battery power twice as fast as in series, but if I don't want to show the cockpit off- why bother lighting it when no one sees it? save on batteries. Batteries are cheap yes, but it's a few less times I have to disassemble the backpack to put new ones in. If the mono-LED in the head isn't enough light for my taste, I will modify the head to fit two LEDs in there (there is room) and I would probably then put the cockpit on a separate circuit.

It seems the videos aren't growing as fast as I want them to. There is also a drop off in viewership right after the plates video. Either folks don't want to view the WIP videos or they can't get to them. If they help you folks out and you enjoy them let me know. I think I'm being a bit hasty as the videos have only been out at most anywhere from 1-17 days.

Anything I can do to improve the videos (suggestions) would be awesome. For future projects I'll have to compact a WIP into one video, as I assume most people don't have the time to slog through four or five videos to see a WIP.

I like watching them. It'd be easier if I could watch them here at work.

Dlinker
April 26, 2013, 10:44 AM
I enjoy watching them also, but I watch them sparingly because:

1.) I don't have much time for watching videos. Either I'm busy at the office so pictures are more convenient or I'm busy at home working on my own kits or doing errands so again, pictures become more convenient.
2.) I have a hard time staying interested in something I don't have practical use for. If I was working on my own PG kit, I'd keep watching and likely return to the earlier vids as well. Or if you had the painting vids up. My curiosity just isn't enough at the moment.

A single WIP video might be more ideal, but at the same time, the format you're using now is great for reference use, especially for a kit this involving. In short, no real issue with the vids themselves. Your viewers either don't have time or don't have a current need to watch the vids.

Jfl0
April 26, 2013, 4:51 PM
Thanks for the input. I'll take to heart your comments. I'm thinking it's just a convenience issue and I'll make future WIPs more compact, especially for MGs. The PG warrants it's own series. (laughs)

I enjoy the videos man. I think the only thing I would improve on is maybe some more thoughts on things you like or don't like with the kit while doing the build! Dlinker
April 26, 2013, 6:23 PM
A more compact vid for 1/100 scale kits and below works better, but it depends on what you're doing with the kit.

For a PG kit or anything unique that you're doing to a smaller kit (like scratch-building), a set of vids will be ideal.

Jfl0
May 3, 2013, 4:46 PM
Heyo.

Things are slowing down a little bit with my final exam being tomorrow and the process afterwards to get my degree in hand, but I do promise a few more videos before the move in a month.

The MK.II is complete save the backpack and weapons. He looks AWESOME. I will record audio tonight for the articulation and parts review and get to the video ASAP. I find recording the audio free hand (not scripted) and then matching the video to it is easier than the other way around.

The kit has it's downsides, but there are overwhelming positives that I think it will earn a three thumbs up (you guess where the other thumb is).

Look forward to a fun review. Also look forward to the RG Zaku II review back in my original WIP thread when I get around to it. Once I am moved and settled in, I want to build the RG MK. II I bought and compare the RG v. PG. Should be fun.

Yeah, I guess warning folks about stuff to be careful of can help with a major purchase decision. I'll break a code of silence and say that he is a bit wobbly. HOWEVER, when you want him to stand in a pose- he stays there without risk of falling over.

As a precaution I may do to the MK-II what I did to D-Hell and Heavyarms and get a peg running to the groin, or at least resting on his backside. That type of modification is thinking on the long term end of the investment- so that it looks good 10, 20, 50 years from now. I will have to custom design a cradle mechanism to get him airborne. In addition, the 3/16" diameter brass will probably work, but I want to scale up with the kit and maybe go 5/16" to bring home the point of size.

When I get home I'll make sure to start on the lower torso (most boring part) and the limbs review. The weapons are done and they look BOSS on him. The backpack needs to be finished as well, and that's kit and kabootle. I'd go and take photos now, but I need to go take an open book, open note final exam that I need a minimum of 12.4% on to get a C minimum to pass the course..... let's see if I can get a B+ or A as a final grade ;)

You know that's what I want to know about the PG models. The cons won't prevent me from purchading them, they will just allow me to prepare ahead of time. What colors do you have in mind for all the details? Are you going to paint the armor pieces the same color as what the pieces are molded in or will you go a little lighter or darker? I'm just curious because when i do eventually get this kit I want to do preshading on it but I have yet to wirk out how I'm going to do that without affecting the overall appearance!

Jfl0
May 4, 2013, 10:13 PM
I would like the armor to be the correct color. As for the inner frame I am homogenizing the colors to a steel color with details including brass, red and green for wires, and there's a whole bunch of other colors I listed somewhere on page 4, I think. See OP; it's a table of contents. I do plan on preshading. I have decided to add a second LED to the head and modify the internal circuit so that the eyes appear brighter. I am switching the LED color to red.

Huh, the inner frame for the arms looks deceptively simple compared to the other parts. Also, how is that sliding gimmick on the legs? I'm wondering if it's the kind that loosens quickly.

....... and half the photos have derped saying that I moved them.

I'd say it's a bit more simple than the legs by far, but it's much more advanced than an MG. We'll get to that slide gimmick on the legs :p It can make him.... a bit wobbly.

The next video will cover the arm, arm inner frame, the lower waist and the leg/leg inner frame. Looks like it will be around the golden 10 minutes that I want. Long enough to pack content, but short enough that I don't lose everyone's attention span. I need to record the last part then I'll head down to record the footage, then marry the two. Depending on how much my internet wants to slow down tonight (I hate comcast) I'll have the video uploaded this morning.

Well on wednesday I will be placing my order for the mkii! Your WIP has made me obsessed with getting this kit. Gonna also get an airbrush setup so I can do this baby justice.

I think you'll enjoy the build. It took me around 12-13 hours of building just to complete the kit- and I haven't wired it yet. Unfortunately this project of mine takes a back seat because I am moving soon and I have a lot of stuff I need to take care of with real life. However, once the Zaku is complete (probably before I move) and I am all settled in at the new place, I'd like to begin work again. When building your PG, be very careful around the chest area and watch what you're doing. I've broken a few pegs already I'm not happy about and will have to fix.

Problem is- if that new apartment doesn't have a hose outside I'm gonna have a real problem cleaning pot jars- because I don't want to damage the kitchen sink using it as a slop sink. I'll build my own somehow. Might as well get started designing one- so that it takes running water, but drains into a funnel which drains into a jug dedicated to holding the chemicals/dissolved paint, which I then need to find a way of disposing.

Lot of work and effort to continue the hobby. But it's what I love doing.

I remember my perfect grade Zeta, man was that fun! It took me days, literally, to complete it. I was 13 at the time and I'm proud of the finished product. I concur 100% that PG is a big undertaking, I also had to do the wiring in mine for both the glowing eyes and the wing tips. Sadly when my dad cleaned my room while I was at school the shield disappeared, I can't tell you how mad I was when I found out, and that has also been the cause of many of my models missing parts or disappearing completely :(
